    Hello Sweeney,

Chosing the domain extension is not just a thing of facial look.
First, it depends on what you want to do with it and what you want to achieve.

Among the qualities of a good domain, the most important are:
    1. How Typo-Generic Your Domain Is: This means can one just go straight to the browser and type your domain

    2. Length of your domain: The true fact is that most people just register domain without thinking or knowing the qualities of a good domain. A good domain name should have at most fourteen letters.

    3. Hyphenated domains: Hyphenated domains are poor. In this special case, no matter what, the man with mylongtailkeyword.com will definitely take up the traffic from my-long-tail-keyword.com.

    4. You can favourably use mylongtailkeyword.net and compete with the .com extension.

Well, in my opinion the vast majority of your traffic will NOT be from type in traffic, it will likely to be from the SERP's.

If someone is scanning down the page of results, which one is going to stand out for them?

The domain with hypen's I feel.

I usually register a domain with hypens for that reason. Of course the other alternative is to buy both domains and redirect one to the other, to help the type in crowd.

Both should rank equally well for you.

    Cheers

    Tim

In terms of SEO, both are almost the same. But I suggest you choose, mylongtailkeyword.net, as users can easily type it.

I think you should go with mylongtailkeyword.net
because search engines don't take into consideration the domain TLD.
and as angilina said it will be easier to type.

Either will be ok but - .com will have the edge.

It's more about the on page SEO than the domain any way.

If you nail the on-page seo and create a few quick links to the -.com you will get a result.

If you want a free article my buddy did on SEO drop me a PM it's awesome and relates to exactly this topic...

I don't think that's true. Links from .edu pages (technical schools, high schools, universities, colleges, etc.) will provide you more link juice than an equivalent .com, .net, etc.

        WRONG!

gov's, edu's hold the SAME Juice.. don't believe me? Run a search on matt cutts blog.

The guy you quoted is correct, I had said the same thing in another post that was made a few weeks ago.

Contrary to recent reports I believe mylongtailkeyword.net will get best results - but that could change with the wind as some search engines change their minds more often than I change my socks !

From my experience, with all other things being equal, a .org will usually rank better (in google at least) than a .net.

Perhaps consider using a .org extension if it's available?

I'd either pick another longtail keyword (rearrange the words or use a synonym for one of the words), or use the .net. Hyphens suck for several reasons. .net sucks a little less.

HI, .com or .net or good, but take a look from the searchers point of view; is it easy to remember? can it be easily misspelled? Having your keywords in the URL are important, if you need some ideas checkout freekeywords.wordtracker.com for other word ideas.

    Thanks
