Random adsense earnings

About three months ago my adsense earning were starting to pick up to around the $15/day mark. They sat there for a while then bottomed out to no more than a couple of dollars a day. After sitting there for a while with the odd higher day, it looked like it was coming back for about a week.

This last week however has been abysmal - $2 a day or less. And so far today I've had 140 impressions with 0 clicks! I have crap CTR's normally of 5% or less, and have tried everything in the book to improve it with no luck. Some days it's much higher and some days it's lower. I've checked the ads in US and they are very relevant so the low CTR confuses me.

I figured with 10 or so sites there would be at least some level of consistency but it almost seems to be completely random.

I've tried to monetize my sites in other ways, but there isn't that much available for most of my niches. I've tried some other ad networks, which got some clicks but had terrible $/click.

My question is where do you think I should go from here? Play around with adsense and try to ake something stick or just scrap everything I've done so far and start over

  • You didn't mention your rankings, or how you're tracking where your traffic is coming from and what keywords they're using to get there.

    Maybe look along those lines?

    • My bad. I figured everyone just uses analytics so didn't bother to mention it

Half of my traffic is from articles/web2.0 and half from search engines with very relevant keywords. One of the sites has got 30 direct hits a day since the day I bought the domain.

      5 of those 10 sites are in the top 10 for their main keyword - ranking 1, 2, 5, 7, 7
3 of those are top 10 for around 3 keywords
1 of those pulls traffic from hundreds of different long tails
  • Doesn't matter what your method... the money will not flow until you give people what they want.
  • JimmyRose, I've been experiencing exactly the same thing. In Nov. and early Dec. I was averaging around $10 - $12 a day with seven sites, all with keywords somewhere on the first page of the SERPs. Then in mid December both clicks and traffic just suddenly dropped like mad, and in January I had days where I didn't even make a whole dollar. This month has been slightly better but I'm still nowhere near where I was a few months ago, and like you I've done everything I can think of. Today I've had 183 impressions and 3 clicks. :-) I have no idea at all what's going on, but I'm determined to keep at it.
  • It's seasonal, nobody wants to buy or click on an ad to buy something so soon after Christmas. It will keep picking up slowly.
  • what is your traffic range ?
140/day impressions worth nothing in the adsense world, you need thousands unique visitors to see some decent $

    • I would believe that except that my housemate who I introduced to IM is making a consistent $8 from about 40 impressions.
  • It all depends on the niche, how targeted your traffic is, and how targeted your ads are. Some sites get a lot of traffic and make pennies a day. I can make $2-3 on one site from 6-8 visitors/day. Not often, but that's the idea.

    • Yeah I understand this, I just can't for the life of me work out why there is such a HUGE difference. We're talking a <5% clickthrough vs his 40-50% clickthrough. Once upon a time mine was fairly high too, so I thought maybe the ads had dried up. I used google's ad preview to find the ad's were almost perfect in the US and UK, my two biggest traffic sources.

The biggest difference is that his are mostly product related and mine are travel, hobby and product. But even my product blogs are performing terribly. I've just swapped some adsense colours and next will be the theme. Beyond that, I'm completely out of ideas.

@zcx It's pretty annoying eh? Like you I definitely won't be giving up though - just moving to other monetisation methods.
  • You need more than 100 or so impressions to gain any level of consistency. Once you get at least 1000 daily impressions regularly, then you will see some consistency in your earnings. ten 10 niche sites earning $1 or so a day is not anywhere near enough to expect consistency from.

I have no scientific proof of this, but I get the impression that Adsense "holds" earnings for a few days and then "releases" them at once.

I have many sites and I notice that individual new site channels will get 0 clicks for 4 days and then on the fifth day pay $50 or so for the same level of daily clicks. This tends to hapen on newer sites/channels.
  • I'm no expert on adsense though, having around 40 sites with adsesne on them, I often question the wisdom of losing a hard earned visitor for 10 cents...I do notice that each day it is one or another site which makes a a little bit but, never any combination of 2 or 3 sites.
  • I am fairly new but I am getting clicks each day now. My best day was about $8; not a life changing amount but I am pleased. This is a business and you have to work it like a business, investing in more sites, and learning more about adsense as you go on.

We all want decent money right away - but there are not many offline businesses where you have such a low cost of setting up and the potential for earning a great income. I believe that this should be thought of as, at a minimum, a six month project.

If anyone builds a site a day in a properly researched niche, and makes sure that the content is of good quality, helpful to the reader - they will be half way there. Then in six months they should have a business that they can be proud of and an income that will support them.

I say they should have a business they can be proud of and an income that will support them - I will tell you in about four months if that is the case! LOL!

    Best wishes,

    Ruth
  • I would take a step back and look at your keywords. Are they getting enough serach volume? If they are then it may be a seasonal issue, this is assuming that your site is ranking well.

I would seriously look at the search volume and and your keywords.

    Good luck with it all

  • I have heard this from other marketers. They said exactly the same as you. They also said it is better to let it take its course and then for no reason what so ever they pop right back up again.

The time scale can be from a few days to a year
