Affiliate links and Google's Punishment.

I have a site that was ranking number in Google just few days ago, but it has dropped to number 8 since I put in some affiliate links, I don't know exactly what happened, is it the "Google Dance" because the site is just a week old?
Is it really true that google penalises for affiliate links one one's site? Again is it advisable to cloak affiliate links? I've had different sort of opinions about this and seems very confusing.

  • They might use them in their algorithm some how... but they certainly are not penalizing them... if they were I would be in big big trouble.

All my sites have lots of affiliate links. And I change them all the time, and it seems to have no effect at all on ranking.

It's likely that your new site doesn't have the authority yet to rank well on it's own so any links you add can affect the ranking. As you build authority the more stable your site becomes.

It is post hoc ergo propter hoc though I can't 100% sure it has no effects on google rankings.

Thanks Shirley, I thought as much. I just hope to see it there at number again.

      Hi french affiliate,

      These might help -

      From here -

Thin affiliate sites: These sites collect pay-per-click (PPC) revenue by sending visitors to the sites of affiliate programs, while providing little or no value-added content or service to the user. These sites usually have no original content and may be cookie-cutter sites or templates with no unique content.
(It actually goes quite a bit deeper than that simple explanation)

      Also here and here

I found these from this search.

      Hope this helps.

I dont think they are penalizing them from my own experience. If they did they would have to penalize every single site on the internet as there all selling some form of advertising somewhere usually.
