Hi Guy, The most effective way I found of getting high rankings is, yes as your freind mentioned, good old one way back-link theme article marketing. to PR4+ domains ONLY. These links cost more but being a S/E analyst myself, have held a #1 position in Canada for three search terms for... well this is my thrid year running. My point is that the mention of your friends advise of a new Google algorithm movement, just means that After 13 years in the SEO business I've never once changed my strategy, which is 100% pure white hat, one way, theme related backlinks and tons of social marleting and business networking. But only submitted to PR4+ websites. Or if your a biu hard on the cash flow like we al are these days then I suggest double the backlinkls for PR3+ websites, hope this helps...Todd

P.S. HUGE SEO tip - You would need to be a website host or have a friend as a specific...VSP website hosting account, chances are he has 100's of domains hosted on only a few ip's. Getting a link on a high PR website like that...I've seen shoot website to # 1 and stay there, Todd.

Seriously, I'm with James - how on Earth could Google know how long I've contracted my web hosting for? And could they anticipate it when I'm thinking of moving from shared hosting to a dedicated server or to a cloud platform?

I can see them knowing how long you have your domain registered for, a WHOIS query will tell you that. I could see them knowing who your host is from the nameserver settings, and from that they'd know if it was a shared hosting plan or dedicated server.

But how could they know how long the hosting was paid for - that implies that they have access to my hosting companies financial records.

Mark me down as skeptical! And if I'm wrong, then please enlighten me.

It sounds like the guy is either trying to sell you on his multi-year hosting plan or is practicing a bit of cargo cult SEO.

Are you sure you're referring to 'Hosting' or so you mean how long you have registered yoru domain for? If its domain then that info has been around for years! Its always good to register your domain for like 10 years or so.....'so they say'...lol

OR does Google look at your domain's nameservers? I'm really finding it hard to believe that they could get hold of my hosting contract. If that was the case then ALL my sites would be in position 1 or at least the first page since I've had my hosting account for 10 years!!!

I think this guy is confused. There is no way for Google to know that, in fact it would be a privacy violation for your webhost to publish or share this information with Google or anyone else. However, what he may be thinking of is the fact that Google CAN look at the WhoIs information for your site and see whether you have registered it for 1 year or 2 years. But the webhost, not a chance.

i dont think any hosting company would reveal its client information let it be how long you have registered with the hosting company or your contact information , however if you do Whois lookup, you will be able to know Domain servers information, may be based on that Google will come to know about the hosting information.

This isn't true. Matt Cutts (Works for Google) said that the length of registration doesn't affect rankings.

I still register my sites for 10 years anyway though. I plan on being around for a long time if I make a site, and I'd rather pay up front.

I'm not so sure if the length you have registered a domain for matters that much, but one thing that we all know matters is domain age. How long you've been around is a factor and can help in terms of trust.

When playing in competitive markets, you want to have all things on your side that are possible. So if the competition is that tough, I'll do everything in my power to help my client rank, and one of those may very well be registering for 5-10 years.
