Help me evaluate niche

Hello,

I'm a newbie here, and to IM in general, but I've been making websites for about 10 years now.

I've read the threads by XFactor/clickbump and have been doing some research. I think I may have found a good keyword phrase, but would like some opinions before I dive in.

I'm looking at doing a review site for a widget.
  • The keyword phrase, "widget reviews" has 9,900 global per month
  • Spyfu "widget" ad cost of $0.65 - $2.16, and 9 advertisers
  • PR for the Google first page is:
    2 4 3 0 3 3 3 2 4 2
  • #1,2,3,5,6 are large review-everything type sites.
  • #4 is a single page but with a good .org ("widgetreviews.org"). The same domain name is available as .net and I feel like I could create a better site than them.
  • #7 is a blogspot with Y! of 229 and good on-page SEO
  • #9 is an amazon.com product page


So, do you think I've found something good here? I know people will say "just try it and find out", and I probably will, but I want to make sure I'm not missing anything simple.

  • I am anxious to hear what people have to say about this. I too am just getting into Niche sites and am in the keyword research phase of it all. (not having much luck at the moment)

      The first question you need to ask yourself is - does a market actually exist for widgets.

      The "terminology - widget" is used for a myriad of things - but can you make money out of it.

    • First of all, I checked widget reviews with keyword tool and only got 590 global searches per month.

      Secondly, when checking searches, I always prefer to do phrase or exact searches because broad is exactly that...broad. This is not an accurate representation of the searches because any search that contains widget + reviews in any order will be counted.

      When checking exact searches, the searches are next to nothing, and I believe not enough to start your website upon.

      Below are two pictures of the searches; the one on the left is broad searches. The one on the right is exact.

  • I have a few questions which may help you:

    How many competing pages?

    How long have the domains on the first page been around?

    What titles are they using for their landing pages?

    Are there internal pages showing up on page 1 of Google (i.e. widget-review.com/review1/page.html)?

    Are there any of the following types of sites on page 1?
    1) Local
    2) Social media
    3) Amazon, eBay, or another 900 lb. gorilla

    If you see local or social media sites showing on page 1, you may be able to get some rapid exposure by following a similar strategy. If you see Amazon or eBay on page 1 in the top spots, it may be a tough niche to really crack over the long haul.
