I just have a quick question. How many is the maximum number of keywords I can put in my meta keyword tag before I start getting diminishing returns or they start getting ignored completely?

    • Just use the keywords you are targeting for that page, which should be more more than 2 ideally unless you are targeting long tail phrases whereby you could squeeze more variations onto one page. The general rule is to target a page to one or two keywords/phrases. In case you didn't know, Google ignores the Meta keywords tag.
  • Thanks for the information, can any one tell max keyword density...

    • I don't think anyone knows the max keyword density but i know it can't have more than 31% vowels, and i heard if your keywords are shorter than 3 letters google ignores them completely

The meta keyword tag is useless.
  • You should use the exact targeted page keywords and should try to keep it between 1-2 KW's.
  • Meta keywords have been ignored for ranking purposes for quite some time as it was too easy to manipulate. To rank now you need quality, engaging content that provides useful information to your visitors - your content needs to focus on more than a single keyword phrase, it must cover the topic that you're discussing/offering information about. Take a look at the top 10 results for your keyword phrase - quite often you'll now find that some of them don't even have the keyword phrase in the title or description but the page covers the topic and includes related phrases, keywords, niche-specific slang etc.

Find common phrases in the top 10 results and include these in your page. Write for your audience and not for the keyword - when you read the article would it be good enough to be published in a magazine? If not, then it's not good enough for your audience either.

High quality in-content backlinks are also an important factor but don't rely on Google organic searches for all your traffic.
  • Simple. Zero!

  • You can use between 3-5. Don't go over-board doing it though.
  • not more than 4....

    • The correct answer was what UMS said.

There is no reason to use the meta keyword tag whatsoever. The major search engines do not use them at all. In fact, in some cases they are hurting sites for using too many.

The only thing that putting those tags in does is give away your keywords to competitors.

  • I would suggest you to go with 2-3. The most important is the title and description. Meta keywords tag is often neglected by google.

  • Dont use more than 10 keywords, it is useless tag however..
