Came across an interesting discussion on another board and wanted the opinions of the real experts...

Have do-follow links in forum signatures fallen in weight for Google SERP placement?

Thanks!

I never really thought of them as an "seo thing". They are more useful to let people know what you do. I often click on people's signatures because I am interested in seeing what they do in their business.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

Maybe for SEO purposes, but the actual targeted human traffic proper forum marketing can bring in can be absolutely astounding.

Me neither, I'm not interested in the backlinks. I've got companies that do my seo for me.

Just like the others, I don't really care about the SEO benefit of the signature. It is the potential traffic that counts.

I've always looked at signatures as a great way to improve your brand and not so much as a form of SEO. The better the comment you leave on a blog or a forum and the more people will come to know you and the more likely they will visit your site.

As far as SEO goes, I think it still works as it helped me to get my lottery site to #1 on Google for my search terms.

I see forum signatures as a way of generating quality targeted traffic. Also, a way for us commenters to provide value to whoever is in the forums. I have solved a lot of my issues just by clicking on those signatures. It's definitely not out of fashion.

I'm more concerned with just getting targeted traffic. But I guess if the forum is popular enough it might help with serps.

For me, forum sigs are not for SEO but for getting targeted traffic to my arcade website and my forum sig is part of my branding campaign.

explain for me how exactly your forum signature about an arcade site is going to give you targeted traffic from a webmaster forum about internet marketing.

It's going to give me targeted traffic as webmasters who are bored or stress after managing their website can get to go to my arcacde website to have some fun.

Forum signatures work great for targetted traffic. An eye-catching image signature will drive a lot of traffic.

Not so interested in the SEO benefits.

Well, I just Googled some of my keywords and the top listing in those keywords was from high volume forums in those markets, so maybe it all depends.

However, like everyone else has said, I use forum sigs mostly to let people know what I have to offer in that particular niche. I have found that once you get a little known in a forum, people start asking you in private messages anyway so you might as well have it in you sig for them to check out easily. :-)

I still say that if you do your online actions with real people in mind (instead of trying to "game" the system), the SEO, rankings, targeted traffic and subscribers follow.

If your signature is strong enough on calling for action, you are in the right forum and with decent reputation, then they are very valuable.

But i'd say out of fashion or not, you have nothing to loose putting them and certainly sometimes a lot of gain!

It's not totally lost its fashion. Forums sigs are still live links whether it has a rel="nofollow" attribute or not. It still has it's fashion in the sense that you are promoting your site and making it more expose to the internet world.

Another thing is, most SEOs (those who do not spam) nowadays are not considering forums sigs as part of their link building campaigns because links from forum sigs have less value when it comes to search engine rankings.

I never thought about it from an SEO point of view. I think it is great to be able to share what you do in your signature. But also when you are needing help with something on your page, the signature is there for a reference .
