Converting More Visitors From Adwords To Leads

Hey guys,

I'm doing some testing with adwords and I'm starting to get clicks - but not conversions.

I'm sending visitors to a squeeze page that normally converts at 35% to search engine / article marketing / Yahoo answers etc traffic.

But currently for my Adwords traffic it's only at about 8%.

I know that if I were more specific with my keywords then I'd get better conversions, but at the moment I'm looking more for on-page tweaks I can make to increase conversions.

For example, is there anything I could put on my page to grab the attention of the reader and keep them there?

I'd really appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks,
James

    Start with the headline first.

Test that a few times before you do anything else.

Based on my experience, if you can't get them within the first few seconds they land on your site they never stay more than a few seconds.

When you can create that killer headline, everything else is just icing on the cake when you increase your conversions by changing other elements on the page.

    James,
I gather you are just getting started with adwords, adwords is getting more and more competitive every day.. Google pushes the Quality Score harder every day... I may be able to offer some pointers with some questions. This will help others provide advice also.
I won't ask anything that will give away your niche.
    1. What is your quality score on most of the keywords? 7+
    2. How many campaigns running?
    3. Avg number of keywords per campigns.
    4. Percent of keywords set for Broad, Phrase, Exact.
    5. Direct linking or landing page.
    6. percent of keywords running ok on all quality questions.
    7. How many keywords are not running due to low bids.
If you provide these answers many folks may be able to comment.
And none of this will endanger your niche.

Headline is key. Keep rotating possibilities to increase success rate. Make sure you are generally selling the sizzle not the steak. People respond to whats in it for them, tell them the benefits and give social proofs (testimonials) combined with scarcity.

Well i will change up the view on the last posts for you, you mention you now have a 35% conversion rate with alternate methods.

we would all agree thats very very good, but then you tell us when you plug in adwords it drops.

now nothing changed but adwords so your lander / copy / headline is fine, based on the averages you have now in other formats. the problem is with your keywords / or better the over use of non performing keywords

if you delete 75% of those keys that are not converting and keep the ones that are your conversion rate will move to 32%

Your call just shooting some sideways thinking at you

My best guess is that this simply is due to the fact that when using adwords your whole "funnel" changes. When visitors come from articles/yahoo answers you already built trust and a connection to them. You showed them that you actually can provide value, so they're more likely to sign up if they liked your article/answer. As for your seo-traffic i'd bet that it won't convert much better than adwords, if the visitor lands directly on your squeeze page, because again, no previous connection/trust.

//btw: Does anyone know if you can track the referring sites of the sign-ups with aweber? If that's the case I really should start using them...^^

Another factor is that these days almost everyone knows that people are paying for adwords ads, so they know that there must be some commercial intent on your side, whilst with articles/answers you come along as the nice, helpful guy.

What can you do about it?

Sorting out the bad converting kw's like tryinhere suggested will definately kick up your conversions, relevancy is really the key here. Just make sure you still get enough traffic. If you run out of kw's, be creative(or look at google suggest...).

On-page wise try to really focus on building that relationship with the visitor, educate him and be helpful, like you maybe would in one of your articles/answers, even if it's a squeeze page.
