Exact Phrase Count Value?

I've always ignored exact phrase count on the grounds that I should only worry about the first page.

However, I've been doing some reading lately, and both George Brown and Gary Gregory seem to put a lot of stock in it. Since they've been so successful, I'm wondering why this is important.

First, are they correct and it's important?

Second, why? I just don't understand.

  • Dont know the in`s and out`s of way its important and i`ll bet loads of warriors come here and tell you its not.

But my IM changed over night when i started to only use exact domains !! Just try it and see ok, buy a exact domain and build a site and check where it enters the SERPs,

Then buy a domain thats not exact but has about the same strength of competition as your exact domain site, build a site around this domain and see where that site enters the SERPs.

i`ll put you money that if the competition is about the same for each keyword the keyword you bought as a exact will enter the SERPs higher than the non exact !

And if anybody here tells you this is not true just ask them if they have actually tried using exact domains or if its just that they have read exact domains dont matter in the sites ranking !!

    • Hi bcmwp,

At best the "exact phrase count" can be used to narrow the scope of your keyword research. You are a bit more likely to find obscure keywords with low competition levels when the competing page count is lower. Aside from that, I see no use in that number.

Since there are a number of keyword research tools that use low exact phrase count as a criteria it has become a bit less useful. I wouldn't consider it important, just a simple method to narrow the scope of your keyword research.

  • I always do an exact phrase even with the capitalization and with s or without s. I think It does matter based on what I read and based on my own experience.

    • Thank you for the replies, guys. It's interesting to see that the last two have completely opposite opinions on the subject.

Maybe George or Gary (or someone very familiar with their methods) would please chime in? I'd be interested in the "why" of caring about EPC.
