Found a Great Niche but.... (Have a Question)

Okay, so i found this great niche with a keyword that gets over 100,000 searches per month according to google's keyword tool. Plus, the number of competing sites is extremely low.

As I look at the first page of results, almost every page listed comes from what we would call an authority site. The domain level pagerank of all of these sites is PR 5 or above. However, the pages that come up for this keyword are all PR 3 or below and as I checked the backlinks to the particular pages listed, they all have very few links. And the onpage seo is terrible.

It's a health related niche, so the sites that show up on page one are the obvious ones like WebMD and emedicinehealth.com and etc.

But like I said, the pages that come up are not that strong from an seo stand point.

Do you think i should still tackle this niche?

    It's one of the age-old questions. It depends on how much effort you put into it. I expect it would have to be considered doable but I guess it would take some time.

    I would suggest you to go for it. If you can be patient, can do stuff like article marketing or backlinking properly, I really feel that you have a great chance of getting the top spot. However, regarding backlinks, as you have quoted,

    Backlinks matter a lot. Numbers dont! A backlink from PR8 will be enough from getting you a high rank from Google, but I doubt even 10 backlinks from comments posts on a crappy pool of comments with PR-4 will yield you the same result.

    All the best and invest your time in the niche you have selected. Great if it works! And in case it doesn't, your guilt wont be there screaming "You should have taken a chance atleast!"

    Those sites which are on top of Google may be because of the old domain age.You should keep focus on building links to your site from your theme based sites.

    If you think you can build a site with PR3+ and more backlinks than the results, go ahead. But for that, you have to work your @ss off!

    I provide keyword research for Warriors and so I see thousands of keyword phrases every day.

    Because of that, I don't think that your statement above is accurate. I'm not saying that you're lying. I just think that you are misreading your stats.

    1. Getting over 100,000 searches a month equals out to 3333 searches a day. And although there are definitely keywords that get that amount of daily search demand, those that also have low competition are like Bigfoot (ie. they're incredibly rare).

    2. You stated that you got your data from Google's keyword tool. Were you looking at the data for "exact match" or "broad match"? I believe that it defaults to "broad match" and it's very common for marketers, especially newbies, to forget to switch it over to "exact match" (although some people use "phrase match" instead).

    My guess is that you are looking at the broad match data, and depending on how many words on in your keyword phrase, this could be drastically more than the "exact match" data. You should double check that.

    3. What do you constitute as "low competition"? Less than 100K competing results? Less than 50K? Or 10K?

    Also, how are you determining your competition? It should be with the keyword phrase in quotes.

    4. You stated that this keyword phrase has low competition. But then you stated that on the first page of Google's results, that it had plenty of authority sites. Now, I have been doing a lot of research lately for Warriors regarding page 1 competition analysis, and so it has forced me to see lots of high and low competition keyword phrases and how the first page competiton looks like for them.

    Generally, low competiton keyword phrases (that also have a high search demand) are not filled with authority sites. What I tend to see for these types of keyword phrases are page 1's filled with articles from articles directories (especially EZA), and lot's of web2.0 properties (ie. hubpages, squidoo, blogger, wordpress, etc).


    My suggestion is to double check that your data is accurate. If it is, than congratulations, you found an opportunity. I wish you all the best.

    But as someone who has seen time and time again marketers build blogs and websites based off inaccurate or misread data, only to be frustrated by minimal results, I urge tyou to verify your stats.

        Yes, I used keyword tool using exact match. It has about 94,000 searches per month in exact match for a 2 word keyword phrase. It has 125,000 in phrase match.

        When I type in the keyword in quotations in google it has 873 competing sites.

        I guess I got lucky. I was only able to discover this keyword term because I recently came down with this medical condition that afflicts alot of people.

        I didn't know what it was called, so I just described what it was doing and what it looked like and then I found out what it was called after doing a little bit of research.

        I noticed that the first page of Google for the search term brought back a lot of authority sites, but the actual pages were not that strong in terms of seo.

        They just gave a quick description of the condition and that was about it.

        The page with the most incoming links had 176 incoming links. Upon further examination I noticed most of those coming from discussion forums where people were linking to the page as reference.

        There was only one website in Google Adwords targeting this keyword. they were selling medicine for this condition and I bet they're making a killing!!

        I'm planning on creating a small report about 20 pages on how to eliminate the problem. Almost all the websites recommend surgery but that is not at all necessary. I got rid of mine in less than 24 hrs using a homemade treatment that only costs about $5 to put together.

        I was just wondering if it would be worth my time and effort to to even go after this keyword seeing how all the 1st page results were authority sites. Remember that since this is a medical condition I think it's only natural that many of the results be medical websites like WebMD.

        I guess what I'm really asking is would the age and authority of these websites always outrank mine even if I do a better job at seo with onpage factors, incoming links and better content.

    I see a big problem with your logic.

    If you're going to make your site all about how to cure this ailment by yourself for less than $5 at home, then why would anyone click any ads on your site or buy anything? Either your bounce rate will be through the roof if people are looking for authoritative medical advice or your CTR will be less than half a percent because they are already looking for an alternative cure and you're giving it to them.

      That was kinda the whole point of writing the report.... to sell it!

    you should tackle it. I mean your current high authority competitors are competing with a specific page, however you have the opportunity to insert the keywords in your domain, and make your whole site dedicated to that niche. It should be fairly easy to outrank your competitors.
    For example, in a lot of cases, wikipedia ranks highest for terms which do not have more dedicated competitors. In those cases fighting for the top position with the keywords in the domain is not usually tough, despite wikipedia being highly authoritative. Yours is likely to be the same.

    I agree with KateD. An additional stat to look at is what are the PPC ads paying for this search. If it's not much, perhaps there's no competition because it's not profitable.
