i'm in the process of building a few websites and i don't know if i should use the "www." or not.

Does it help with search engine rankings?

Does it do anything?

Because i've seen highly ranking sites with and without it.
#www

    Makes no odds.

Make sure you're not running both concurrently.

If you are, you can either configure a 301 or a htaccess to redirect one to the other.

Pick one and stay with it.

Jeremy Palmer did extensive research, and actually changed his stance. He is currently saying NO www - if for no other reason it ends up being shorter.

Then do a 301 redirect so you get no duplicate content.

just say no to "www". We have not built any sites for ourselves or client using "www" for several months. There is absolutley no reason to use it.

I made the final decision on this listening to an audio book that referenced many websites. I got sick of hearing WWW on every single reference repeated over and over again. What for? we get it already....

I decided then and there that it was over.

Agreed. I've researched this topic as well. As long as you let Google and others know how you want to be found (www or no www) there is no difference.

The key is to be consistent. Don't make links to your site with with www and some without, this will hurt you. Once you pick a method, stick with it like glue.

You can submit your web at Google Webmaster.

      Good Luck!

    OK, time for the TRUTH!!!!!!

You HAVE to pick ONE. Failure to do so will mean split rankings, and SSL problems. You NEED both because people are BOUND to make mistakes.

SO, there is only ONE answer! Have domain.com redirect to www.domain.com. WHY!?!?!?

Because everyone advertises www.domain.com, and some forums, such as this, will link www.domain.com but not domain.com.

Oh yeah, the ssl should be www.domain.com

Hopefully this post illustrates just what I mean!

I have seen some sites use www2.domain.com
I think they hide the www, then use a subdomain of www2 . It makes it look like they are somehow privey to a special part of the internet.

ww2, etc... are used for load balancing. There is no special part of the internet.

I am a pro WWW because website that links to your website will likely use www before the domain.

An underlying problem is split ranking, with www and non www versions of your site getting indexed separately, you get the best ranking if the same version is always used. There are methods, including .htaccess settings to make your site always display it the same way.

This is something I was scratching my head over for a bit just a little while ago too. I then took a bunch of well known domain names - google, yahoo, msn, BBC, etc. - and typed them one by one into the browser's address bar, suffixed by the respective .com or whatever. Each and every time the result rendered the full www version. I did the same in a couple of the search engines. Same result. That pretty much decided it for me. If www works for the big names, why on earth would I try to be different? Just my 2 newbie cents.
