Best content management system for seo/ siloing

I will be doing siloing as part of my seo strategy. This means that I will need a more complex yet clean internal linking structure. The home page will need all the main categories linked to and then the categories will need to link to each of their respective sub categories. (and likely one more layer deep).
Additionally I am looking for software that leaves clean links and is very seo friendly in many other ways (keywords in url, etc.).

Which content management software do you advise and why?

(Joomla, wordpress, pligg, drupal, others?)
#content #management #seo or #siloing #system

I love wordpress, easy to use, free, great wp community, huge range of themes and plugins, automatic pinging combined with the new silo plugin from Dan Raine (paid plugin but good)

Thanks. I can't seem to find Dan Raine's plugin. Can you provide a link?

If I use wordpress I think I will also use the plugin Yarpp. It displays other relevant posts you have made to the one being displayed. If I do my siloing correctly I won't really need this but I feel it will add a little balance througout my site.

Wordpress is great, if your market isn't too broad. Wordpress is generally best used if you have a specific niche that you are targetting.

If you have a broad range of products that you're selling, I would go with Joomla.

I am working within one MAIN keyword, but tons of different subcategories for this subject, what would you suggest?

And I'm curious to find out why you said those two programs for those reasons. Could you provide more details please

Wordpress installed in the traditional manner is not very good for siloing. The whole point of siloing is to segregate like content. A single install of WP runs all the content together unless you either hack the hell out of your theme or use a gazillion plug ins.

To do true siloing with WP...
say your main theme was animals and you had silos for cats and dogs
You'd have 3 wp installs one in the home directory of animals, cats and dogs.

The one at the home of animals would link to cats and dogs. Cats would only have info on cats and link back to animals. Same for dogs. This is the easiest way to use wp to prevent silo leakage.

The clunkiness of this is one of the reasons I build my sites by hand rather than use a cms.

Thanks for the knowledge. Sadly I plan on having around 500 pages on the site and when I add them one at a time I don't want to go back and add links to the article on 50 different pages manually.

I think I may have to look into several plugins to accomplish my goal of siloing. Do you guys know of some plugins that would help me achieve my goal?

Btw. If others are looking for Dan Raines' plugin I think I found it on accident. http://www.danraine.com/plugins/linkdaemon/ but the site is down now. I'm hoping it's back up soon so I can check it out

Leanna King- could you please link to your site that has the plugin installed so I can see how it works, etc. much appreciated

There are a few ways your can do this using Wordpress. It will require some custom coding thoughout the theme you choose though.

Create your Main Categories using Pages rather than posts. This will keep your navigation menu as a single level list of links.

Set your other articles as Posts. Categorise these like normal but set them to have a parent category the same as the Page (the main category).

In your sidebar.php or equivalent you will need to use the wp_list_categories function (Template Tags/wp list categories WordPress Codex).

You will need to use some php and condition logic to determine what page you are on and use these Wordpress functions (Conditional Tags WordPress Codex) to find out if it is your main category page OR a post from that category - then show all posts in that category.

You can use the condition logic on your navigation menu too if you don't want the sub pages linking back to the other silos.

Once you familiarise yourself with the condition statements and the functionality of wp_list_categories you have full control of the linking structure.

There's always semiologic for $300 bones. Ask around as to whether it's worth it. I've no idea

        Hi,

just posted a similar reply in another thread about the plugin (I was looking for a WSO and some more informations ;-) - already closed it, so no link). Have a look for Kok Choons newest WSO (nuklear something) or just check out that plugin here: SEO Siloing WordPress Plugin
I haven´t tested it, as I prefer something that works automated instead of editing all of my projects. My time is worth the money asked for the plugin ;-)

Seems to be a little bit outdated and takes manual work, but it is free. Kok Choon also recommended it, so I guess it is still working.

        Cheers
        Sven

Ps: Small hint, I click the close button on EVERY IM related site I visit. Most of them have something special to tell me. But make sure to copy the URL before you do it ;-) Then you can read the sales copy and make your own desicion. And no, I don´t get paid for my kind words...

I use Meta Robots by Yoast for my PR sculpting. I'm not familiar with Dan Raine's plugin, but Yoast's is free.

What is your off site strategy?

    Good Luck,
