Finding Niche Marketings (keywords that are searched for)

I've discussed variations on this questions over the past several weeks, but have learned some new things, please allow me a moment to share what I learned, and look for some feed back.

I very much apologize in advance if I am repetitive here, but I am still really stuck and just don't know how to choose my next niche. I've learned tons of great marketing / site promoting things from members of the site, and WSO's I just need to figure out where to apply them (which niches).

1. I have a site I am holding the #3 position for in google US. (Yes this is verified, no local results (local search is off and position verified by other warrior members) or anything like that, I am really holding #3).

2. Google Keyword tool says there are 70,000 EXACT US (local) searches per month for the keyword I am ranking for. (That is about 2,300 searches per day).

3. I get 20 visitors per day from google from this keyword being in the #3 position. Does that many any sense, out of a supposed 2300 searches less than 1% of people click on the 3rd site in the results?

We had discussed these points last week here in a similar posts, but here is the new information I have gathered / learned;

I've run an adwords campaign to measure the traffic on this keyword. I ran it for the last 4 days, and I see an average of 125 people a day that search for this keyword, based upon the ad words impressions. Putting it around 3,500 searches per month.

1. How can google tell me there are 70,000 exact searches per month for a keyword that I have confirmed is around 3,500 search per month using adwords impressions to measure?

2. And the Million dollar question: What can I do to avoid this in the future - i.e. where can I get accurate search volume info without running an ad words campaign for each keyword I want to check? - That obviously not only can be costly buy can be extremely time consuming.

I spent several thousand dollars putting together and promoting a web site that I thought had around 70,000 exact searches for per month. Now that I find it only gets a few thousand searches per month, I don't want to call it a complete failure, but it is pretty darn close. I may be able to optimize it for additional keywords, but it still looks like the niche may be too small to get good results for a forum.

I am ready to move on NOW and start creating more sites in other niches, but I need to find a more accurate way of telling what the search volume is for a key word before I invest huge amounts of money in creating a sites / forums.

Please, what is the secret here for accurate keyword research, or tell me who I have to pay or bribe for accurate information. :-) I'm investing a lot of money in all of this, and if I have to buy another too for really accurate information, so be it, but I need to know it is fairly accurate, so I don't get Scre**d again.

Thank you for your patience with helping me through this extremely frustrating experience.

I don't have an answer for you but I'm definately curious to why that happened. Especially since the numbers aren't just a little off. They're WAY off. Did you double check the numbers in any other keyword research tools?

I've tried several of the other keyword tools, but some gave results so low, that I figured they didn't have complete data.

It could be a seasonal keyword, have you checked volume trends in the Google adwords keyword tool? I also check the volume in keyword tools like Wordtracker, now the numbers there are not too close, but if there is a huge discrepancy then I rethink and try to research more.

A quick check on google insight and google trends will let you know if it's a seasonal keyword or not..

It is for my Jeep web site, so I doubt there is any major seasonal difference.

I looked at trends and it does vary, but doesn't have any sharp up and downs.

        Thanks.

I have had a similar experience in the past... But what I do now, is once I think I know what my next niche will be, I check it with multiple tools... This way if they are all wrong, well, then there is not a whole lot I can do about it....

But don't become gun shy, just because the numbers were skewed by Google... Hit the next niche and the next one after that.... I wouldn't let the fact that this issue didn't work the way you wanted it to... Listen you got a #3 ranking... You have learned a lot, just apply it to the next niche...

Thanks for the feedback. What other tools do you suggest using?

It doesn't matter which tool you use. Pretty much, they all get their data from Google, and if Google can't get the right number from itself, then what makes you think that any third party software can do better. Google lies about the numbers. That is just something you are going to have to come to terms with.

Unless you take the time and spend the money with an Adwords campaign, you can never know for sure.

      Hi Tim;

Can I be pretty confident that the adwords results are accurate? I saw an average of 125 per day on willys jeep and I just ran jeep willys for a day, and only saw a few impression on that.

What I am trying to ask here is; since googles data appears to be completely bogus, at least on these keywords, how do I narrow things down to decide what it is worth running adwords for to test?

For example, say I am going to make a site about feeding dogs. I come up with a list of 30 keywords related to this, google says 15 of them have 5,000+ search volume.

Do you suggest that I just setup and run adwords on all of these keywords? If so, what do I direct the ads to, since I am testing to decide if it is worth entering a market, and I don't currently have a site for that market.

      Thank You.

        Jamie,

Good question, wish I had a good answer to give you. As best as I can tell from my research, and I don't do Adwords, the only way to tell for sure is to run the test on each key word. Then you have to realize that traffic may vary by day of the week, plus it may be seasonal. Unless you tun a test for a week, you may have too small a sample to really know. But, how exact do you need to get? Will it really make that much of a difference if you find the word had 4,000 or if it has 5,000. We are looking for searches in a range, or at least that is what I look for.

But, what do you direct the traffic to? When I first read this information, they recommended to make the ad so it was uninviting to click on. But, you will still need a site for Google to approve your ad. I had not thought about that. I think what I would do is set up a dummy site on a spare domain. It sounds like a hell of a lot of work.
Do you go all out and try to get a good quality score, or just slap up a single page? Not sure it matters if you get a good score or not, just that they approve the site/campaign. You have to bid high enough so that your ad is shown EVERY search, and make it uninviting so no one clicks on it and costs you money.

I would check Google Insights and I think there is another one that the name escapes me for now. But Google Insights will show you the seasonal trends and if the volume is on an up trend, down trend, or just flat. I important stuff to know.

Well I am not sure how well I answered your question, but I hope I was able to help. Good luck.

          HI,

On most subjects, I bet I could fairly easily use some wiki content to create a mini site for the ad.

          Some testing will be required.

          Thanks for your input.
