Why do some keywords say "not enough data" but tons of global searches?

Sometimes I am a bit confused by the Google AdWords Keyword Tool. Some keywords under local, say "not enough data" but have thousands and sometimes millions of global searches a month.

What does this mean?

For example, a diet niche I am looking at has "not enough data" for almost all the search terms under local, but has hundreds of thousands of monthhly searches under global.

What is that?

I'm going to guess it's displaying results for the current month and since we're only a few days in - there's not enough data.

    Maybe?

If that is the case, how do you select a longer date range? What is the point of this tool if it resets every month lol?

      Thanks.

When i experienced this a few months ago i thought it is because nobody is bidding on the keyword i am targeting as adwords tool is for advertisers.

But now reading your thread i am again confused. You say your niche is related to health. Surely advertisers are bidding on that keyword.

It means adwords data is not 100 % accurate.

Yes, that would be correct. In fact, sometimes they are so far off you would wonder how they ever got that number. I have seen numerous people state that they did a search for a key word and found a good one with tens or even hundreds of thousands of searches a month. They end up high on the first page or even #1, and get ten or twelve visits a day. Then they do a test in Adwords and find 125 searches a day.

I have heard that or similar statements so many times I have lost count.

Local is for the country you are in obviously. On the keyword tool, you can change the 'Local' to a specific country. What is happening is that in your country which maybe say USA, hardly anyone is searching for these terms. But somewhere else in the world like the UK people are hitting up google with the keyword.

One reason for that is language varations across the world. In UK and USA both countries speak English but different words / phrases are used to describe things. For example here in the UK people refer to 'sneakers' as 'trainers'. There is lots of searches for 'trainers' in the UK but hardly any in the US.

Also it could well be that something is very popular in a specific country or part of the world but not some where else. For example there there is a TV news presenter by the name Jeremy Paxman in the UK. There are some searches for him in the UK but hardly any in the USA as he is not known over there.
