    Build backlinks to your domain name and use rel="canonical tag in your index page to avoid duplicate content.

      When someone types in your domain, doesn't it
      automatically go to the index page? I mean,
      that's the point, right? If it does not, then
      that's not really your "index" page. I can't think
      of any webhost that would not have this automatically
      set up for either index.htm, index.html, index.php, etc.

      If you have both, there's no duplicate penalty. Google
      does not work that way.

      I think by definition, your true "index" page is the page that
      shows when someone types in your domain. So, you just
      build links to your domain.

      This should all be set up by the htaccess file set up initially
      by the host and server.

      I know mine has things set up so that if there is an index.php
      page, it will automatically go there after typing in a domain.

      No need to build backlinks to the index.php, just the domain.

        Paul's right. Unless you changed it on your server the domain name point is a point to your index page.

      I should also point out that if you type in your domain, and it
      shows you index page, then no matter what your browser shows,
      that's what's there.

      In other words, you type yourdomain.com and your page loads.
      And the browser still shows the address as yourdomain.com.
      Type in yourdomain.com/index.php and mine will show the
      same page, whether or not your browser adds the index
      extension.

      Warriorforum.com is a perfect example. What is being loaded
      is warriorforum.com/index.php whether you type that
      extension or not. If you type it, it shows. If not, it does not
      show but that's what's loaded into your browser.

    yeah, many of you are missing the original point of the question. He's asking whether it's better to link to www.myhomepage.com/index.html or Welcome to myhomepage.com. IF you link to /index.html you better make sure that's redirected to the Welcome to myhomepage.com. Or you'll be splitting your link juice between links you build and natural links because most other sites are not likely to link to the index.html url. They'll just link to Welcome to myhomepage.com.
