Redirecting 404 to index

Does redirecting the 404 page to home/index have any benefit? I have noticed that some of my earlier pages are still indexed and some of those pages have since changed (URL), so clicking on them would give a 404. I understand Google will, at some point, reindex them, but is there any benefit of redirecting the 404 request page to the index page, so that Google never lands on a 404 to begin with?

Thanks

  • not really, some of my 404 pages have products on them...

i put a message out like..."sorry, the page you're looking for is not available, but while you're here, you need to check these tools out..."
