Hey Warriors,

I'm just wondering how this TLD compares to the standard three.

I don't really recall seeing .info domains much in my searches... but I was wondering if anybody has had an easy/hard time getting these to rank.

Thanks!

Before the Cargo Cult SEO 'experts' jump in, take a look at this article I wrote on this topic, .info domains and do a search in Google for the following terms...

    regular expressions
    PageRank Checker
    Noam Chomsky
    metropolitan transit
    move your money
    Roman coins

Were the rest of the people scared off?

prchecker.info owns the entire niche for google pagerank.

Do a search for google pagerank.
Do a search for pr checker
You can flip that around any which way from Sunday.
And you still get prchecker.info on top.

Try this search on for size:
how do i check the pagerank of my website
Yes, I did it with and without quotes.
      Guess what? prchecker.info once again.
Funny thing when I did it with quotes it did not find
any, and shoved prchecker.info into my face once
      again as the first suggestion.

Maybe the cult members drank the kool aid.

Well, I ended up buying a .info - so we'll see what happens. I won't be doing any hard SEO, just small daily things as it's not mega-important for me to get this to rank... it'd just be nice.

One of the sites I am currently working on is also a .info domain. I actually posted my own thread about this a little while ago, when I was trying to decide whether to go with a short keyword .info, or a long keywords .com domain instead. I actually decided to do both. My main site in this project will be the short .info and I may/will use the long .com as an additional site multi or single page for a possible wheel. Maybe even for a blogger blog, who knows. The experiment continues... in my spare time... very slowly. lol

Having .info should not affect SEO. But bear in mind that people tend to use .com most often (when they can't remember the exact TLD) so they would probably end up at domain.com instead of domain.info

My thinking, at least with respect to my site, is that this project is geared toward SE driven clicks, as opposed to direct dial-in. Since it's all about clicks, it doesn't really matter what comes after the dot in the name, as long as that name sits at the top of the clickable heap.

I just tried a .info for the first time a few weeks back. I have noticed that it is definitely harder for initial top 20 rankings than .com, .org and .net. My guess is that in time, it will all even out, and get similar rankings to the other extensions.

      I agree.

IMHO, .info domains have to *earn* the trust to get into top SERPs. If you have quality content, people will link and over the time the site will climb in SERPs. Regular-expressions and PRchecker has been there for a while and they have quality content.

When I had doubts, I posted the same question in Google webmaster forum some time back. People who had experience said, initially it was difficult to rank .infos. But, all theorists said it does not matter. In my experience, I haven't had much success with .infos.

Remember, the question is not WILL .info rank in SERPs, but how fast and how easily they rank in top results.

If you're going to build sites with really good content and is patient then it does not matter.

Google doesn't give importance to Domain name extensions, so there is no difference.

I have seen a few .info names raked at #1, but not as many as .com .net or .org. Right now I am testing it out to see if I can rank for one of my .info names and if I can then I will be buying more .info names because there cheap and if you plan to build a lot of sites this will save you a lot of money.

We started our article directory on info domain and it was not because .com was taken ( it was already taken anyway ) but we wanted info domain from the start as it made most sense with our domain name. The results have been really good so far and I must say it is doing better than any of our .com sites ever did but it is not because one domain extension is better than an other. If you are willing to put time and effort into SEO you can rank any domain extension very well. As said before search engines does not give you any special treatment just because your extension is .com or .info

People are realising the potential of info extension as it is very suitable for information websites and good info domain names are more and more harder to get.

I really like what you've done with your site, howinfo. Good idea and you've acted well on it. Thank you for sharing. It is inspiring to read stories, but a picture is worth a thousand words, as they say, and seeing one site like yours in action does that much more for the confidence booster factor for us aspiring IM'ers. Thanks again.

Maybe the reason we don't see many .info domain names in the SERPS is because everyone is scared to use them for serious SEO?

Seriously, couldn't that be the simple reason?

Maybe there are just less .info pages? Everyone is so obsessed with using .com all the time, so that's why you see more .com pages in the results?
