How to increase my standing on google

So I did a test website targeting a keyword that had a couple authority sites on it and another sniper site. Its sitting at 10th spot atm on broad search with around 3.6 million other sites. For phrase however, it is sitting I think around 6th? or maybe 5th, whereas the other sniper site is at first. I want to beat out that other sniper site. My page has better content and Ive already made a sale after the first week it was up but I think that my have been a fluke from a couple articles I posted. How do I beat out this other site. How many backlinks do I need? And how do I achieve that. Any insight would help!

It is all about bookmarking - the more sites you have pointing to you the better... sort of... it is actually more about getting quality / relevant links too, but simple backlinks can be easy to get. Here is something I threw together for another similar thread on backlinks sources:
- Simple: forum posting - make posts on relevant forum threads and link in your site with the anhcor keywords you want to rank for.
- Simple: blog commenting - as above but posting comments on relevant blogs.
- Simple: basic directory submission - submit to just a few directories which you know will approve your link instantly / soon.
- Simple: Social bookmarking - submit to a few Dofollow social bookmarking services - possibly the simplest way of getting quick backlinks? (I use Social Marker or Onlywire)
- Medium: ARTICLE MARKETING - probably the staple of backlink building efforts and can take many forms, but basically involves you writing articles and posting them to article directories to get backlinks / traffic.
More work: If the keywords are competitive or you are losing rank / still not ranking then you can copy your article and post it to other article directories, and in these resource boxes link back to your main article.. you can go further with this by rewriting it a little, submitting it to more article sites, or even using spinning services and submitting to a lot of places like this. Further still you could create posts on sites like Squidoo, hubpages, Blogger etc and link to your main article / main site, or even create whole elaborate "link wheels" of these web2.0 services and link them all to each other in a circle and back to your main article too...

Whole books can, and have been written about article marketing so do a few searches if you are new to it

hmm,
1- register for google webmaster tool and start to index your site
2- add site map
3- keep updating with content
4- add your site to high PR directories
5- backlinks ,back links aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand back links

Just put in mind that it`ll not be an easy job , but it worth it

Get targeted keyworded anchor text for your link from high quailty authority dofollow sites. It can be time consuming but will be worth it. A couple of high quality back links will out do hundreds and sometimes thousands of lower quality backlinks.

  like others said, on page optimization is more important than off page. Just inter link your pages together, main page main keywords, other pages long tail keywords in url
