I just wondered if there was a minimum number of backlinks that a person should start with. I am getting the whole backlinks work good for page ranks and am wondering how many is a good rule of thumb to start out with?

As many as you need to get the No.1 position in Google for your targeted keyword.

When your website gets the No.1 position, you can stop.

When other people gets the No.1 position, you can build more backlinks to snatch back the position.

Yeah exactly their is no set number the more the better. I would comment on blogs related to your niche with high pagerank for starters. The more quality links you have pointing back at your website the better. It is a long tedious process but you will never regret it if its done properly.

    Good luck!

Something you might want to try is entering the URL of the top sites into a backlink checker. It will give you an idea of how many backlinks the competing sites have. Try the Yahoo one here:

  • It´s more than just beeing no.1 on a certain search term. The big guys, like Amazon for instance, have sites with a lot of links to the home page, while their inner pages do not have much or even nothing. Nevertheless these inner pages rank everywhere, on many first pages, with a minimum of backlinks. Because these inner pages have only a few, or even no backlinks at all (but often some PR even without backlinks) you can win it with a mini site from Amazon and other authority sites. But in the long run I think it´s easier with a very strong homepage and easy and fast ranking for new pages.

QUICK TIP: Try using Yahoo Site Explorer to see how many backlinks your main competition has, that will give you a good ballpark figure to try and exceed

The number of backlinks needed to usurp your competition varies enormously from market to market

Don't build too many to start off with. Its better to go for a few day and build gradually. Otherwise you'll have to face the google dance.

The more the better, backlinks are placed higher up in the list because they are considered more popular and thus more relevant. In addition, the sites with the backlinks are themselves analyzed for backlinks to determine how popular they are. For example, a site might rank higher if 50 very popular sites link to it rather than 500 unpopular sites.

  • Hi kella,

An Internet Marketer should understand the importance of backlinks for his search engine marketing strategy. Therefore, you should not think of what is the minimum. An internet marketer needs to aim as high as possible in getting quality backlinks for his site. It would be advisable to try and get backlinks using as anchor text your targeted keywords as well.
