Is there any real point submitting to a whole bunch of social sites, will this help a sites seo ranking or is it just a short burst of traffic?

ive been submitting all my pages to 2 of the biggest social sites and just concentrating on getting backlinks from Angela/Pauls links...is this enough or should I join 50-100 social bookmarking sites too?

Thanks

Well no, not from untargetted social websites.

SEO traffic on the other hand...yes

Traffic - Maybe. If the title is like "awesome", expect to see a few hundred visitors from 10's of SB sites.
Backlinks - Lots of them. But, be slow.

I don't really rely on social bookmarking backlinks.

Personally, I find their effects minimal.

Ditto ... and not only that but you don't even get a short burst of traffic either. Except maybe from stumble. But they never buy anything.

To be honest, I don't even get traffic from these websites.

I doubt the backlinks have any weight at all.

I actually did a small test earlier in the year with some microniche domains.

Some I did some social bookmarking (to between 10 and 20 sites) plus submitted article to eza, buzzle and a few others.

On others I just submitted the articles.

They performed pretty much the same so my conclusion was that social bookmarking is worthless.

Now, don't get me wrong, I think if you have SB accounts that are nurtured and have a lot of friends (or whatever they are called) and bookmark things properly (not just spamming your own website links) plus you have something of interest to bookmark then I think they can be very beneficial for targetted traffic.

But for what most people here do - bookmark their own sites and only that - I think they have seen better days.

Google is onto all the "shortcuts" that people use anyway and eventually easy methods that eventually get abused just don't work as good.

    Just IMHO

      I second that!

Social bookmarking can work but when people just bookmark their own site(s) it is just "backlink spam" and is easily detected by search engines so you won't see any value with that approach.

It is best to either 1) create an authority bookmarking account(s) that has lots of bookmarks for related sites along with yours. 2) Join a network like LinkJuicer that already has lots of users with various accounts. The links won't be as powerful but you will get a lot more of them across many accounts and my experience at least is that you need a LOT of bookmarks to make a difference in SERPs.

      Good luck!

I use social bookmarking sites to spread out the Google index bait....It's great to get your site found and indexed quickly but as far as SEO goes I don't really see any boost from using them....

For the most part RSS & Social Bookmarking, Press Releases, and a few articles are pretty much my initial setup and follow through to get my site found...after that I'm done with them.

You can try Socialbot by Incansoft....you can submit a new url to a bunch of the top sites then forget about it.

Nice tip! Never though of grouping all related site in one authority account! Do you actually see the power of doing this?

Does it help in ranking? or just for traffic?

Since all sites grouped under same account, may be building more links to that account make sense? Passing more link juice?

I would suggest submitting to social bookmarks.
I have done it with several websites, and I get a tiny bit of traffic from them, but even better is they build backlinks for your site.
I've been using a great site that automates your social bookmarking as well.
    You should check it out.

    Thanks
Ernie, from my experience I found out that the more different social bookmarking websites you use the better. There are of course some things to be aware of:

    1) Use different accounts/titles while submitting.
    2) Bookmark other websites that link to yours.
    2) Follow Pareto rule: 80/20.
    3) Ping everything.

Also pay attention to the domain name of the website. I wouldn't bookmark a US company website using some .ru or .it or any other country social bookmarking website.

Point #2 gives great results making your website crawl to the top of SERP.

If you do everything correctly you will have an increase in mozRank and Page Rank.

    Good Luck!

I only bother social bookmarking my absolute best content (rather than my whole domain) anymore. Not for the burst of traffic, but for the backlinks from other webmasters who end up linking to your content.

Niche specific social bookmarking sites can be quite effective both in terms of social traffic and SEO. For example, in the programming niche links from dzone.com can really boost your site.

Well, you say, what if my niche doesn't have a specific social bookmarking site? This is what is commonly known as an "opportunity".

      Hi Frank,

Any special ways or tips to rank for competitive keyword with bookmarking sites? I believe they can help in ranking competitive keyword, but not sure how...

The traditional way I did doesn't help much, may be theme those sites help a bit, but is there a way to rank for 2 or 3 words keyword?

      Any ideas?

I mainly use bookmarking to go after a lot of long tail terms. For example, 'inexpensive blue widget' or 'Sony X8481 Widgetman Review'. Over time, these links will accumulate and develop site authority for a more competitive, top level, term, such as 'widgets'. This is how you can build a site that ranks well (page 1-2) across a wide spectrum of terms rather than a narrow single term.

Of course, I don't recommend that social bookmarking links be your only links but they're relatively easy to get, especially on an ongoing basis, and helps keep Googlebot interested in static sites.
