#1 Rule to be succesful in Google AdWords

Here's one of the best advice I can give to you. I know a lot of people try Google Adwords and don't succeed at first and just give up. Now i'm going to give you an example and I can bet a lot of you fall into this category. You start a ad campaign, now for this example ill say that your promoting a fat loss program.
You begin to make your add campaign and now you pick your keywords. Since its a fat loss program you pick keywords like, fat loss, how to lose fat, how to get rid of fat, diet plan and so forth. After your add starts to run you relize that your ad doesnt appear on the first page or its not ranked high enough. This is because these keywords are so common and they have a higher rate of competition. So you, being new bid a higher price, now your getting a lot fo clicks meaning your going to be paying a big bill for your advertisment . And to make it worse you probably wont get many sales because your keywords are so broad.

Now heres what you should be doing, and I can gaurantee it will work. When it's time to pick your keywords think differently. Now instead of picking broad fat loss keywords, pick a specific market, lets say someone wanting to lose fat before there wedding. Now pick keywords like losing fat before a wedding or losing weight before wedding and things like that. Be more specific and you dont need more keywords than say 20-25.

Now after doing this you might get far less clicks, but that means your not paying for uneccesary clicks. You might get less clicks but more sales. Now instead of getting 100 clicks and one sale now your going to be paying less because theres less competition with highly targeted kewyords and now you might get say 10 clicks and 1 sale so for every 100 clicks thats 10 sales. Get it? Now i know some of the more experienced people might know this buts its never a bad idea to post this for some of the newer memebers who are just starting out. I would hate for them to make the mistakes I did, thanks for reading.

This is my experience too. I burnt a lot of cash paying for the "usual" popular keywords before targeting the more specific keywords of the type you outlined. I read somewhere the "weight loss"is not a niche "weight loss before a wedding" is a niche.

Yeah that's true but weight loss has been beat to death I used it as an example. Last night I was watching UFC i think you know what that is. Its getting really popular and i searched it on google things like how to fight like MMA fighter or how to learn MMA, by the way MMA stands for mixed martial arts which is huge and there no one selling anything there was like one ad on the side. I think its a huge oppertunity to promote martial arts products and the such.

        Hi Harry,

Now i know some of the more experienced people might know this buts its never a bad idea to post this for some of the newer memebers who are just starting out. I would hate for them to make the mistakes I did
I didn't ignore this, but if you are going to tackle this subject then I would add that what is more important is for new PPCers to FULLY understand the difference between broad, phrase and exact match.

You didn't mention this at all, and my advice for new PPCers would be to start with exact match only and then (if necessary) expand outwards when they are more comfortable.

If they just go straight in using broad match phrases then it's kind of irrelevant whether they use popular or long-tail phrases because the PPC system will send them clicks for a variety of phrases that they hadn't even input themselves.

Any beginner should do their studies BEFORE getting stuck into PPC. It's like driving a car - do it without instruction and it can be dangerous. But like driving cars, anyone can do it with some education.

The best starting place is the free adwords tutorials provided by google which are comprehensive.

Incidentally, I'm wondering if you watched yesterday's PPC classroom pre-launch video (no affiliation with myself) as this was mentioned in that video?

          ExRat,
Thanks for pointing that out, i was in a train of thought and forgot to mention that. What you say is very true, and iv read topics where peple say that its there first campaign and there daily budget is $2000 and there bidding upwards of 2 dollars a click. DONT DO THAT haha

            Hi Harry,

That's why I don't make a habit of trying to tell people what 'the number one rule is'. But I'll make an exception here - I would suggest that with newcomers to PPC, it's 'do your homework first' and number two would be along the lines of 'test things out in a very miserly manner until you find your feet.'

It's much better to 'not get many clicks' than to 'crash and burn instantly and blow your budget'. But the fact that most people DO and then never bother with it again, doesn't bother me, because it leaves the field more open for people who do things cautiously and because PPC is ultimately an auction, the less crazy bidders there are, the better it is.

Well said, the problem is when people hear all these crazy stories about over night millionaires or read all these ebooks about people making millions a year. So the new guy, all eager and excited doesn't know what he is getting into and losses lots of money. My advice, read lots on forums like this one and take it slow and start small and test and tweak.

  • Thanks for sharing, I do feel you wrote a good write up ,yet I can't help but think when designing a website to cover all angles of fat loss and fitness and got to remember we all need those strong and popular backlinks. There's so many ways to get a website ranked these days,I think thise of us who do get ranked a lot do have our own personal secrets we never share, I know I do, and most people here who get ranked on google have thier secrets. But it's nice to see some one trying to share thier thoughts about this subject. So I give you 2 thumbs up for that.

well what you describe is basically "long tail" keywords, the "longer" and more specific the phrase...the more targeted the audience..the better the clickthrough. Especially interesting in over-saturated markets like "fat loss" and similar.

yeah it is but you would be surprised at how many that are new to this the that broad keywords equals more clicks which means more sales which is not always the case and could cost you.

I'm curious, have you ever actually achieved a 'one sale for every 10 clicks' in Adwords? That seems pretty good to me - I've never heard it working THAT well. Just wondered.

That one sale made me 100 bucks lol not bad eh. I didn't continue for a while because of college and work, but im back into full time now because theirs money to be made just have ot be smart and think like the consumer.
