I know good SEO on websites and good backlinking is required to rank well in Google, but is there something else that I'm missing.

Here is an example of one of my sites ranking that really peeves me.

My site for this particular keyword phrase has:

51 pages indexed
180 backlinks to this particular page
222 backlinks to the whole site

keyword phrase is in the Title, URL, Description, Header.

PR0 - new domain.

Ok, here is another site for this same keyword phrase:

10 pages indexed
0 backlinks to that page
0 backlinks to the site

keyword phrase is in the Title, URL, Description, Header.

PR0 - new domain.

My site is currently ranked at 65 in Google while the other site is ranked at 8.

Can anyone explain that - the SEO is the same on both sites but mine has more indexed pages and a lot more backlinks so why is the other site ranked at number 8?

Honestly, it's things like this, when I'm putting in the effort to get these backlinks and then sites like this appear with seemingly no effort and rank higher, it's this sort of thing that makes me want to just give up.

0 backlinks seems a little strange. That is why I asked. Does the site's homepage have more backlinks?

Did you check alexa to see if they somehow are driving a ton of traffic to that site.
How is the page that ranks 8 for the keyphrase written... real gud SEO compared to your page ranked 65. How do you know the other site is a brand new site?
There are a ton of other things that are hard to find.. if you want me to analyze it, pm me the domains... anything else we say is just guessing.

Haven't checked Alexa - didn't think of that.

The main difference I can see is that their keyword phrase is in their main domain. Mine isn't, it still shows in the URL as it's on a page within my domain (reason being that it is a Trademarked name).

I will PM you the urls

That to me is the main reason. Keyword rich domains often instantly outrank "better" sites with more backlinks (obviously depending on competition).

I certainly am not an expert, but here is some of the things that caught my eye..
    1. They have a video and it is believed that google goes cukoo on videos.. and they may have even indexed the page by coming from the video.
    2. Google alwasy loves good stuff on the index page compared to buried way down into many pages like yours... theirs is right on the index page as if it was their most important product.
    3. I know this is not the best way to show backlinks, but for any website showing tons of backlinks using this process does well I know for sure.. that is in the google searh link: mydomain.com with the space between link: and mydomain.. I know that is not official way, but it sure as hell shows tons of backlinks and if you do not believe it, track some down and see.... many of then really are backlinks... more than 12,000 while you are only showing 19 or 20..... that will destroy you..
    4. In your RSS feed which google dearly loves you are filled with stuff like Diet Dog Food and Salt water fish.... the other site RSS is filled with Them Thar Biorb FIsh Thingys as though they are the only thing on earth...
    5. Now that is just a quick and cursory look, but if I were google I would love their biorb site too... your site covers tons of stuff and they only cover a small amount of stuff.
    6. I noticed that Adwords is not very busy for that term, have you thought of giving adwords a try? If that is something you do not know... then currently its dangerous to get into as its getting so damn complex and competitive... with all that Quality Score crap and tons more.....
    7. If interested in setting up a campaign and giving it a try, pm me I will set it up for free and teach you how to make it sing for free... I just do it for fun.... I am running a special PPC real estate campaign right now... check out this article.. for details.. Virginia Beach Real Estate Adwords Pay Per Click PPC
    8. And that offer applies to anyone reading this article... your adwords account totally free... that is with exception of click cost... now you say... oh I just figured out why you would do it free... I give you 300 a month for adwords clicks and you send google 200 and keep the rest... no so fast... I never touch the dough.. you give your credit card to google and they bill you direct... no middle man.... thought you had me huh.. Any way read the article ... its about real estate, but I can set up any account... and train you to be an expert to boot... and did I say.. its all FREE...
    9. Oh by the way.. how did you determine their site was new, with that many places their url is showing up is unusual for a new site.... I did not look up the age... maybe they were an old site that just converted to recently doing the Biorg stuff...

    Hi Sheryl,

This may be because you have not much competitors in the second site while your competitors in the first sites has either more backlinks or more high quality backlinks than your site. This happens especially if your site is the only site out there that is optimized for that term. There are lots of niches with very few competitors.

    Regards,

    Aira

Ok thanks guys - I'm definitely not going to use the keyword rich domain for these keywords as I know it's Trademarked. I'm sure most of those sites using it will get away with it, but I've been burned before with a Trademarked name so I'm not going there again.

Tommy - thanks - and as for assuming its a new domain, I just assumed that as in Market Samurai it comes up with no domain age so I assume it is less than a year old or it would show it's age.

I'll have to go back and rethink a few things, not much I can do about the domain but I'll change a few other things.
