Hi. I want to move my entire domain from .in to .com without affecting the seo and the backlinks I have built.

Firstly, is it possible to do it without affecting the seo?

And if yes... what is the best and the easiest way to do it?

It will affect the seo ... duh!!

it is a new domain name but it should be easier to build it back because it is a .com

I've moved domains a few times in the past and there is a transition period where you'll take a hit, but once everything gets reindexed and all the redirects read by the spiders, you'll typically get your old rankings and traffic back (30-90 days).

  • A 301 redirect will let the search engines know the move is permanent. You can and most likely will loose some of the page rank associated with the original site.

In regards to the back links to the site you will want to edit as many of these as possible to reflect the new site. These will not auto update by themselves with a 301 redirect.

It is important to note on the new site that you will want to keep the URL structure, titles, keywords, descriptions, etc exactly the same as the previous site to reduce the effects of loosing page rank and your current position in the search engines for your keywords.

    I hope this helps.

if i use a .htacess file, do I need hosting for both the domains?

I am not worried about the PR, it is 0 as this was a new site. The only reason I am moving is that I found a .com domain with the same name that had expired.

what about the emails? can i redirect them as well?

PS: sorry for suck stupid questions... its just that I dont want to take any risks

  • Add the dot com as an addon domain to the .in domain. Both sites will resolve to the same content. Then focus on promoting the .com rather then the .in
