Your SEO Questions Answered

Just wondering, if say i start another website to SEO for the same niche using the same account for webmaster, would google penalize me?

Also at the same time, the article links for my article points to both of this site. ie 1 article, 2 backlink(1 to each site)

Case study:
website A - keyword = fat lost 4 idiots
website b - keyword = fat lost 4 idiots

boths site using the same webmaster account.

Article link - 1st link and anchor text - i am an idiot - A
2nd link and anchor text - i am an idiot - B

would this affect my SEO effort for either site?

Thanks for the question! I can see how this would be a major concern...but at the same time it's a concern based soley in paranoia. Please don't take that the wrong way. Let me explain.

Google itself knows that there are publishers out there with more than one website. Google knows that there are publishers with 5 to 10 webisites. Using webmaster tools or the same articles linking to the same sites will not penalize you in any way. In fact, I do it all the time when writing articles for clickbank sites.

babywarrior, you have nothing to worry about when doing this. However, the fact that you recognize this as a possible flaw and penalty means that you are somewhat ahead of the curve of ordinary internet marketers and it means you can identify potential problems before they happen.

Hi,

I paid a lot of money to get my website professionally S.E.O'D, and the whole process took about four months. I was then told that if I needed further ongoing S.E.O it would cost me $400 per month, which I can't afford as I'm not making any money yet!
I have had a few visitors, obviously I am also article writing, submitting to directories,
and anything else which is cheap, am not doing Adwords yet as again, it's too expensive for me right now. My question is: How can I tell if the S.E.O. Guys did a good job?

If you're website is now in the Top 10 results for your targeted keyword, then they did a good job.

The true test of SEO - IMO - is to get a site to the top and keep it there.

I've had many sites drop out of the rankings after a week and it's just been an uphill struggle to get them back up there.

If the SEO did his job properly, you'll maintain any rankings you have made.

Helkay,

Allow me to address this deeply important and concerning issue. Rankings are something you can never apply a blanket statement to. For instance, if I were to tell you that within 2 months you'd have a top ranked website I would be somewhat remiss as I do not control the search engines.

$400 a month is not an uncommon price, as I charge some of my clients up to $1000, but let me ask you these questions. These are questions that a reputable, caring SEO company will ask their clients if they care at all regarding their clients rankings.

1) Did they ask you about your niche and what progress you've made so far?

2) Did they originally quote you a *general* time frame in which you would see ranking improvements?

3) Did they offer any sort of money back guarantee?

4) Did they ask you about what current visitors to your site convert and which don't in order to find an order of importance of venues that draw traffic?

Helkay, to be honest with you...there are a lot of snake oil salesman out there. They are the ones that say "Oh, I know you paid me for the last 2 months but we really don't have the resources to rank you high right now" or "Google is implementing a new update which prohibits us from ranking you at this second. Pay us for another month and we should be there".

It seems to me that whoever you're working with now has either one of two things:

1) a substandard view of SEO (They've never ranked their own sites but continue to offer services)

2) a silver tongue full of promises that will never happen (only you'll find out about it too late).

I would recommend asking for a monthly (or bi-weekly) report of what they've done for you and how they feel it will help your rankings. If you feel comfortable doing so, email me with this list and I'll tell you whether they're just misguided, just in their actions, or pulling your leg.

Hi Thomas,

I am reading and implementing your blogging bible (which is awesome, as usual, by the way) and I have a techie question.

I have a google sitemap. In the BB you recommended Kb robots. But in the google sitemap there is an option which says: Add sitemap URL to the virtual robots.txt file and then further says: The virtual robots.txt generated by WordPress is used. A real robots.txt file must NOT exist in the blog directory!

So, do I still upload the KB robots pluggin and disable the virtual robots.txt

I am really confused but mainly because I still am techie challenged.

Dita,

I'm extremely glad you like The Blogging Bible and thanks for the question. I agree with you that all this robots.txt and sitemap business can be confusing at times. Basically, when it says that a "real robots.txt file must not exist in the directory" it's referring to manual implementation that people sometimes use.

The manual way of adding a Robots.txt file to your site is to upload it as a physical file to your directory. The plugin generates a virtual file to take the physical one's place.

Essentially, they're just saying not to use both because the physical file takes priority over the plugin. If you had a physical robots.txt in your directory and you attempted to use the plugin, it wouldn't do anything.

Hi.

I started off doing an X factor type micro-niche website. The keyword is in the domain and it ranks on the fist page.

Started to expand on the niche by adding content on different subjects in the same theme.

These pages are ranking but on no-where near fist page. Typically they are on page 8. Am getting some traffic through the broad searches but minimal.

Some of these keywords have exact searches per month of 10,000+. What can I do to get them on the first page?

The site is about 8 weeks old. I am adding a few back links here and there. Scared to add too much in case it faces the google dance and dissapears. Most of the backlinks I can find at the moment are from high page ranking spam comment blogs, forums and do follow social bookmarks.

  This problem is not an uncommon one. The X-factor method is great and I have to say that it's a pretty spectacular piece of work. Now for your question:
  
  Your main page is ranking solely because you've got such strong relevance to the search term due to your keyword being in you domain, giving it the appearance of having a lot of strength. So, if you were to take out the keyword from your domain odds are that your main page wouldn't be ranking. You just need more strength.
  
  8 weeks is still a pretty new site, so this is still going to take some time. Start building links to your post pages in order to build their strength and get them to rank. In time, they will - but this isn't the be all end all.
  
  If you want your brand new posts to start ranking immediately upon publishing in the future, you're going to have to build some strength and funnel it in immediately to the post page. Here's how you do that.
  
  Build links to your category pages. If you do this, you'll consolidate strength in them and in turn your category pages will transfer that strength to your posts. Strength always flows downward and this is a great way to get your future posts the strength they need to rank upon publishing. Hope this helps!

Thanks for answering my post. That was a bit computerese. So do I understand it correctly: that despite that statement in the WP I still can upload the KB robots plugin and just follow your instructions in Blogging Bible, and I do not have to remove anything or change anything in WP with respect to google sitemap?

Thank you for guiding me. One more thing i like to know is about article submission.

I want to know submitting articles to many popular directories such as Ezine, Goarticles, Articlesbase, ArticleDashboard I am still not getting good results.

I submit new article in every two days in these directories but still i am not getting much traffic from it. I do proper keywords researching and good optimized title.

Can you please guide me how to get more traffic from article directories ?

Is it worth to submit articles to these directories? I do article posting to my website blog too.

Hi. Thanks for this thread. I have a question about SEO and my blog. I use wordpress and at the moment I only have posts. But I would like to start using pages and make my site make look more like a static site than a blog. Ok, here are is the SEO question:

At the moment, I am ranking #15 for my keyword. I have my very first post optimized the most for my keyword, as I read that when your site is new (and mine is) and is being crawled for the first time, the engines use the first post's content the most to determine what your blog is about. At the moment, I have 3 posts on my homepage. I would like to change my homepage from a posts page to a static page, and in the process make it less wordy. (and move all of my posts to a page titled 'blog') If I do this, will the engines still look at my first post's content to determine what my blog is about even though it will no longer be on my homepage, or will they now look at the new content that is on my homepage and possibly drop me in ranking?

When I read this question It made me immediately smile. You've hit the nail on the head in a sense and this is something that I've yet to cover in the thread. Thanks for asking this question as I think it will help others reading as well and you're absolutely correct in your assertion that people don't talk about where to get links.

I want to start by talking about how important a natural link profile is. A link profile is a broad spectrum of all of the incoming links you have to your site and we want to strive to make this as natural looking as possible (as if we've gained all of our links from people just linking to our site by their own free will). The more natural you can make your link profile look, the better you'll rank. I will address the different sources of getting links in order and share with you my experiences with them.

1) Article Marketing - This is somewhat archaic now. While it's true that you can rank extremely focused micro niche sites solely with articles, this isn't the be all end all of SEO. I use articles to get my sites indexed and provide a boost of link juice at the startup of the site. I will very rarely write articles after my site has established itself because the method is somewhat transparent. Google knows that the links provided by these sites are manufactured, thus I see little value to them. I am in no way putting successful article marketers down, but in my experience I can be more efficient in obtaining links. In summary, use articles to get your site indexed and provide a solid foundation for efforts yet to come.

2) Profiles - These are extremely volatile and they can either make or break you during SEO. If we're thinking of SEO like a house, the foundation must be built before we build the overall structure. If we don't it'll fall down. (forgive that analogy, I was a Carpenter for years. ha) Because profiles provide great linkjuice and they're extremely efficient in terms of the time it takes to build the link it makes them a great option the can literally skyrocket your rankings in the SERPS. That being said, they're extremely volatile in that they can be deleted immediately after you post them by the site administrators. If this happens, it can result in a cataclysmic shift in the speed at which you acquire links (Google sees 100 profile links on tuesday, then 60 on wednesday due to 40 being deleted by site admins) which is a bad thing. Profiles are great when used in a fashion that boosts your incoming links when you already have a few hundred incoming, therefore generating a lesser effect on "bouncing" or Google dancing when admins delete some. Overall, once your site hits maturity, they're great!

3) Blog Comments - I recommend these as step 2 after you've written a few articles and provided a solid base for your site. Because they're coming from multiple blogs with multiple PR, strength and relevance, they are nearly untraceable by search engines and they look extremely natural. Also, you don't have to worry about Google finding them only to have them be deleted, as most that are going to be deleted will do so before going live on the site due to Akismet and spam filtering. These are a powerhouse and I've ranked sites using Blog Comments alone. These are my go to tool for rankings. They're also more efficient than articles because they take 15 seconds each instead of writing a 500 word article taking at least 5-10 minutes to write.

You're absolutely correct! Sorry for the "techiness" of that last post. Sometimes I write and explore my current train of thought, only to neglect other equal trains.

Essentially, if you haven't uploaded a physical robots.txt file to your directory, the plugin will work exceptionally well. The only way it will not work is if you've implemented a custom physical robots.txt file in your directory. If you have not, disregard the plugin's warnings because they don't apply.

Thanks for the question. I believe that this is something that's pretty common within article marketing. Allow me to share my thoughts!

Though I will admit that there are many successful article marketing gurus out there, personally I have't seen the results I yearn for regarding article marketing in terms of overall SEO benefit. That is not to say that there are no benefits, but I experience diminishing returns with articles (though perhaps I'm setting my standards too high).

Article marketing is a strange beast in that it works great for a short period of time and then ceases the make a dent in ranking that I desire. I believe this is due to the fact that article directories no longer possess the strength or the "intellect" to avoid Google's intelligence. Google knows these links are manufactured. Put yourself in Google's position. You see a site with 500 incoming links and they're all from article directories. These links are manufactured and they can tell. I would suggest using article marketing only as long as they continue to help your rankings. After that, it's time to break outside of the box and start experimenting with new tactics.

In my humble recommendation, the next step for you is blog comments. I would say profiles as well but I'm unsure that you have the incoming link base to support such links without having your site start Google dancing or possible (depending on volume) get sand boxed.

Do some Blog Comments and watch your site jump up in ranking =)

Thanks for the great question. I'm glad to see something in this thread dealing with the makeup and SEO settings for Wordpress. Frankly, Wordpress is my absolute favorite blogging platform and I love getting into the nitty gritty details of settings and setting it up for SEO! Love this question.

First of all, I can assure you that you're 100% correct in your move to make your homepage static instead of displaying posts. There is great wisdom in your words. The reason for this being a solid choice is that Google will see your homepage (displaying multiple posts or excerpts of posts) and your Post Pages as having duplicate content. This is never a good thing, but since you've managed to rank #15 I would deem it safe to say that just by chaging this, you're going to see a jump in rankings. I predict you'll jump to #12 or possible #10. We've got that one covered. As far as the setting for changing this, I'd create an entirely new page basically "welcoming" people to the site. Use proper keywording in the page and you'll see an increase in rankings for your posts due to there not being any duplicate content. Also, you'll see increasing ranking for your home page because it's new, keyword rich content.

2) The search engines will determine the relevance of your site depending on what page they first encounter. It's important to realize that each page of your site is judged as a separate entity. If you write about a television on one post (which happens to be the first post encountered by the search engines) your entire site will not be quoted as a television site. In other words, you should be completely fine April.

Thanks Thomas. I appreciate your input and knowledge. It sounds as if you are extremely well versed in blogging and SEO, especially with the Wordpress platform. Like I said in my last post, I have a blog I would like to transform into a static site that has a blog. (hope that makes sense) So, let me see if I understand you completely...you are saying:

whatever is on a page (content wise) is what that page will rank for?

So if I have 3 blog posts on my homepage, and the engines crawl my homepage, they will determine what my page is about (not my entire site) by the content in these 3 posts, the first post being what they see first?

If I change my homepage to a static page, then whatever is on that page will be what I rank for.

Ok, hope I have understood you correctly. That is what my gut told me, just wasn't sure. Question:

How do websites with a homepage full of pictures like apple.com rank high for their homepage? Some website homepages don't have much content on them, as they are more navigational than anything else.

Here is my other question:

This question is assuming the title of your blog/wordpress site is very valuable in terms of SEO. The title usually appears in the header. What happens if you have a professional logo made for your site, and you upload that into the header. (now your header is a jpg file) Will the search engines still be able to see the title of your blog? I know that may be a very stupid question, but I am trying to cover all aspects of my blogging ignorance. LOL

Whether your site is a Blog, an Ecommerce venture or anything else it's essentially the same process when implementing SEO strategies (though ecommerce can be harder to rank). When first starting, I make sure I nail all of my on-page stuff. As you said, SEO friendly URLS and proper keywording are key. Once I've got that done, I'll slowly ramp in my incoming links for extremely long tail phrases. These are easy to rank for and I can see results almost immediately. Once I rank for these, I slowly make my inbound links less long tail until I've reached my main keyword and ranked for all of these terms. For instance, If I had a site about video games I'd start in this order:

1. Free Video Game Strategy Guides
2. Video Game Strategy Guides
3. Video Game Guides
4. Video Games
5. Gaming
6. Games

This is a great thread, I haven't even finished it yet but what I've read so far is real good. The reason why I'm quoting the above post is because I found it interesting that this is the exact model I use as well.

hey glassjaw,

I read your thread on seo and really need your help.

I bought a backlinks packet. I used them and jumped 10 spots in two days for a very competitive keyword. I am presently with another seo company who I have been with for almost a year and am starting to become unsatisfied with their results. I wrote them today informing them that I am considering dropping their service and that I was able to increase my rankings dramatically using backlinks. They wrote the following which I was hoping to get your thoughts on(specifically their belief that random backlinks could damage my website's credibility). Any and all feedback greatly appreciated. My site is a pr4 and my domain is 5yrs old. I have a very established site. I rank well for some very competitive keywords but am trying to break in the top 3. Is it safe to kick the seo company to the curb and go it alone - using angela and pauls backlink packets?

You will need to maintain some form of SEO to maintain those rankings otherwise your competition will continue with their SEO campaigns and eventually take over your position and knock you down the page. I would fire the SEO company and hire out your work in pieces. Unless they are getting the results you want. I'm guessing they aren't or you wouldn't be doing some linking on your own. Get links from as many places as you can and add as much useful content as you can to the site. I am finding this to be extremely helpful, especially in the last few months. Write posts about 300 words that are specific to long tail topics related to your primary keyword and then put your primary keyword link back to the homepage and backlink the posts. Do this with as much other link building you can get your hands on and you will climb up the ranks.

Hey! Thanks for the great question. While I've heard of people getting their competitors de-indexed and taking their rankings, I would strongly advise against this. While it's true that the saying is "All is fair in love and war", the Internet isn't the Wild West that it once was. There is a fair possibility that you'll be faced with some legal issues if they find out it's you and nobody wants those.

This is up to you and I'm not going to tell you to do it or not do it and I definitely am not judging you. I just personally wouldn't do so, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work.

Wow, this is a great thread! exactly what I was looking for. I got a couple of seo issues I have been struggling with.

I have two sites with each 100+ pages. I optimized my homepage for a couple of general keywords that describe all aspects of my niche (all related ofcourse).

My questions:

1) I have optimized my homepage for certain keywords. I also have other keywords that I want to target. If I build backlinks with these keywords in the anchorlink to my homepage, can I still rank for these keywords even though they can not be found on the homepage (considering I build lots of higher PR, do follow backlinks)?

2) My homepage is PR4, my other pages are mostly PR0. All pages are optimized for their keywords. Is there something I can do to increase the PR and ranking of all my pages? Building backlinks to all of them is nearly impossible, everyday 5 to 10 new pages are added.

Thank you for your help!

PS: I am really trying to learn as much as possible about SEO. But there are so many websites out there and not all of them tell the same story. Can anyone recommend a site that offers reliable and up to date content about SEO?

Thanks for the great question. It was a great read, especially because I like doing research on what other SEO firms are telling people =)

Based upon the information in your question and the email that the SEO firm you're using sent back, I can tell you that it would seem some things are a bit out of line here.

First of all, Page Rank is not indicative of top rankings. Page Rank defined is the product of strong links passing strength to your site and can be used as a rough meter or gauge for how strong your site is, where your new posts or pages will index and so on. Increasing Page Rank doesn't by default increase rankings. Quality links create rankings and Page Rank, but Page Rank does not guarantee rankings.

This part of their email back to you concerns me because it indicates that either one of three things is happening with them:

1) They don't know what Page Rank is or does.

2) They're lying to you.

3) Both of the above.

Whichever one of these it is, it's irrelevant. If they don't know what Page Rank does they shouldn't be performing SEO for people. If they're lying they shouldn't be doing SEO for people, and if it's both then they certainly deserve a kick in the buttocks! =)

Here are some other things I take issue with:

1) "You really need to focus on increasing your PR and not invest so much energy into those exact keyword phrases."

This is wrong. In reality, they need to focus on getting strong incoming links targeting your search terms. PR, site strength and rankings will follow.

2) "All it takes is one backlink to do some serious damage to your sites creditability and that could result in your site getting red flagged. We are trained professionals that know what to look for."

While this is true to a certain extent, there is a lot of fear mongering here. I could be reading too much into this but they're basically saying "Don't question us and don't ask what we're doing." which I wouldn't appreciate as a client.

In summary, I don't really want to come down on these guys too harshly but one thing is clear. There is either deception or ineptitude happening here.

I'd get in contact with them, ask them EXACTLY what they're doing on a weekly basis for your site, how those tactics help your site, why they think this is the best path available to rankings, etc. If they don't have answers for you in that exact moment they're not to be trusted. I'd ask these questions to them for another month and test the waters.

Hey all, I took a bit of a vacation for a while and I regret about not getting back to your questions sooner. Let me answer them now!

zachary. I use Thesis for Wordpress whenever possible just because you don't have to worry about on page optimization with Thesis whatsoever. It comes configured to the teeth right out of the box for on page stuff. Regrettable, I don't know of any on page Wordpress plugins for on page SEO because I don't have to use them =(

belgianguy, you can absolutely rank for those terms even though they aren't mentioned on your page. Instead of ranking on relevance for the terms, you'll just have to rely solely on strength. All I can tell you to do is build the backlinks with the proper anchor text to your homepage to rank. Keep in mind that because you have no relevance to these terms you're going to need to give it almost twice as much time as your other terms (given that the new terms are at the same level of competition).

As far as adding PR and ranking to your lower tier pages which are created everyday, I agree that it would take too much time to build links to them all individually. Luckily, there is a way of increasing their strength from one consolidated page. I use Category pages for this on my blogs. I build links to my category pages and create strength on them, then the strength flows from them (downward as it always does) to my post pages. I recommend having your own "category" page as a hug that links to the pages you're going to want to build strength to. Hope this helps.

Sarah. Thanks for the question. It's a good one. In all likelihood, even though Site X has fewer links, they're from strong, trusted sources. When talking about links correlating to rankings I often use this analogy.

If you're applying for a job and you put down 10,000 unemployed bums as references and they all say you'd be good for the job that doesn't mean anything. If you put down the Pope as a reference and he says you're good for the job, the you've got something. It's not all about quantity.

I recommend analyzing the backlinks of the top ranking site and using them as a template for the links you want. If you can get some links on those sites...great! It obviously worked for site x. It'll work for you! Hope this helps.

  You're right. That does look a little bit funky trying to optimize for the two terms at once. I would simply do a search in adwords external and see which of the two terms has more search traffic. Then, I'd optimize for that term first (since it has more traffic and it'll be easier to optimize for just one) and optimize for the other later. Your secondary term will be harder to rank for since your on page relevance is targeting the primary term, but you won't need to rush once you rank for the one term. Hope this helps.

  1. It all depends on how profitable the niche will be for me (or that I anticipate it being). I tolerate higher competition and ranking time for more profitable niches but that goes without saying. Can you be more specific in what type of site you're launching? Generally speaking, I launch niche sites so I look for 1-2 million.

I am happy with the answer and really worried about what SEO strategies can help me ranking high.

In my opinion higher rankings strategies are very difficult.

Thomas i am doing such things in seo from past and even now.

Can you suggest me what else i need to do to get good results?

I do some good keyword research, Creating Meta Tags for each pages, Placing content by checking uniqueness and informative, then Some Web directory submission, Social Bookmarkings, Article submission, Creating blog and update it with new fresh content, Forum posting and some times Press release submission

I think this things are no more working now... can you tell me what other stratgies can be helpful.... I know video is good way but cant create it right now.

I will be glad to get your nice tips very quickly

Hey Ap,

First off it is not necessary to stop using the post format in favor of pages. Post are actually pages. It is very easy to make a wordpress blog perform as a static site would. It is really only a two step process. In your settings menu hit the reading tab. Where it says "your front page displays" select static page and choose the page you want to display as your home page. Next in the "blog pages show at most" area enter 1 post. This will keep your pages displaying one post per page.

Next go to permalinks in your settings. Select custom structure and enter this--> /%postname%/ Now your titles will be completely optimized. Also be sure to use a good tagging plugin and tag all of your posts properly. Also keep all of your posts categorized properly. This will take care of all of your sites interlinking. I like to add links to other pages in the content but only on my larger sites, this makes a big difference.

To answer your last question you MUST name your images properly. Name your image file after whatever keywords you are trying to rank for. Also use alt tags, use the exact keywords you are optimizing for in your alt tags. The bots dont recognize images but they do read file names and alt tags. Additionally this will bring you traffic from google image search results as you will rank images simply by doping this.

Wordpress is by far the easiest platform to optimize IMO and I have some rather large sites built using it that you would not even know were blogs. Provided your them is properly designed wordpress and good use of plugins will handle the rest for you.

Thanks Embions! Is there a benefit to sticking to posts rather than just using pages? Does it matter at all?

Also, when uploading a jpeg file to the header, do you delete your blog title in the settings (i believe it is under general..not sure) or do you leave that in there?

And one more thing I have been trying to figure out is, is there a way to turn off the page or post title on the actual page. (other than simply leaving it blank in the title space....because I still want the title to show up in the navigation bar, just not again on the page itself)

There is a benefit in using post over pages in that most settings and also plugins for wordpress are set by default to handle your posts and not your pages. The biggest disadvantage of using pages though is that you cannot categorize pages and categories are a big deal in terms of WP SEO. By using categories properly along with a good tagging structure you can actually build a site within a site (if you get what I am saying). Also a lot of WP themes add your pages titles to your navigation menu (could get a bit messy adding every post to your nav). Pages are made for things like About, Contact, Privacy, and your Site Map.

NEVER delete your blog title in the settings menu. In fact be sure that your blog title is optimized for your keywords in the general settings menu. When you get a chance, view your page source and you will see why I say that this is so important.

As for your last question I am kind of confused but if you are using pages instead of post then this is the exact problem I was speaking of where when using pages instead of posts your page title will automatically be added to your nav menu. Very messy looking.

Hey there. I get what you are saying about posts vs pages. You said the major disadvantage to using posts over pages is you cannot categorize pages? Would this plugin take care of that? Misiek Page Category

The only reason I wanted to use pages instead of posts was because I wanted to create a top navigational menu with all my pages, and have one of those nav buttons say 'blog' (this being the page with all my blog posts)

I didn't necessarily want to have all my blog posts in my nav bar, but I wanted to create more pages than just the usual 'contact' 'about' 'privacy' etc. I wanted one nav button to say 'home' the next say 'something else'....I hope this all makes sense. Sorry if I am typing in circles here. :-)

I know that WP only pings your new posts, but other than that, and the above mentioned categories issue (which might be taken care of with the above mentioned plugin) do you see any other SEO issues to having the site set up this way? (Pages in my NAV bar with one of them being 'blog' with all my posts) Basically it would look like a static site with a blog attached. I understand that you can make posts look like a static page, but you can't put your posts in a navigation bar at the top, right? And if you could, I am assuming you can't separate them so that some end up on each nav button while others end up on the blog page....

Ok, now that you are thouroughly confused, haha!

You can do it manually, but creating a PAGE out of a POST. Or you can put a nav-bar link to a category page.

Well to be honest with you April I have never went the route that you are going for so I can't really say how that would workout. In the rare case that I wanted to have a site constructed how you have described I would design the site and then just add a wordpress blog to the actual site and I have only done this once.

As for the plugin mentioned I guess it could work if the plugin works properly and is updated frequently along with WP. There are ways to add post to your nav bar but it would require a keen understanding of CSS (which I don't have

). I say go for it though. Pages automatically have seo friendly permalinks and can be tagged so provided the plugin works accurately it should work out just fine.

Not necessarily, but Yes. Google will determine your relevance to search terms based upon what terms are present on your page and their order of importance. For instance, if you've got a page about televisions and you mention a Sharp Aquos HDTV on the site, the spiders will determine that the site has some relevance to this term, thus you will be placed in the SERPS for it. How high you get placed is dependent upon your website's Strength. In small niches, relevance alone can rank you. This is what is taking place when you choose a domain name that's an exact match to a search term.

If I change my homepage to a static page, then whatever is on that page will be what I rank for.

How do websites with a homepage full of pictures like apple.com rank high for their homepage? Some website homepages don't have much content on them, as they are more navigational than anything else.

These sites have nearly no on page relevance due to there being a minimal amount of text present on the page, however they make up for it in terms of strength. These sites have incredibly powerful link profiles so they've got a ton of strength and their relevance can be judged from Anchor Text, Headings and Alt Text of the images.

This question is assuming the title of your blog/wordpress site is very valuable in terms of SEO. The title usually appears in the header. What happens if you have a professional logo made for your site, and you upload that into the header. (now your header is a jpg file) Will the search engines still be able to see the title of your blog?LOL

Yes. Search Engines will still be able to view the title of your blog because the title also appears in the browser window and remains coded into the site. Also, if you ever want to use an image but still maintain relevance, alt text should be filled in with your key term to give the serps an idea of what the image is.

I would just like to start off by saying that this is a great post with lots of good tips and suggestions.

I do have one question that's been bugging me for a while, though. I've asked around and looked for answers, but like all things SEO I always get differing replies.

My question is this: Does it really matter whether you have multiple domains for different niches or if you have one domain with sub-domains for those niches?

Basically, what are the pros of cons of each?

An example of multiple domains to clarify my question: bluewidgets.com, reddoohickeys.com, yellowthings.com

An example of sub-domains to clarify my question: bluewidgets.onesite.com, reddoohickeys.onesite.com, yellowthings.onesite.com

Any input would be much appreciated!

Thanks for reposting this question and I can't believe I didn't get around to answering it before. I guess I just overlooked it, but that's no excuse. Let's get right down to it!

The benefits of having multiple domains for multiple niches are less apparent over time (because one can rank anything with enough time), but if you're worried about ROI in a specific time frame, they're very important.

The main benefit of having a new domain for each niche is that you can properly keyword your URL for the search term. By doing so, you increase your website's relevance (in Google's eyes) by an exponential amount. One can effectively rank a site for Tom's water filters (given that it's a small niche) simply by naming your site http://tomswaterfilters.com

If you're using a subdomain, the best you can do is toms.water-filters.com or something to the effect. This waters down the efficiency of the keywording in the URL to the point that you'd do just as well ranking with a site called tomstomatoes.com for the same term because neither domain name here increases relavance by any substantial amount.

Not necessarily, but Yes. Google will determine your relevance to search terms based upon what terms are present on your page and their order of importance. These sites have incredibly powerful link profiles so they've got a ton of strength and their relevance can be judged from Anchor Text, Headings and Alt Text of the images.

This question is assuming the title of your blog/wordpress site is very valuable in terms of SEO. The title usually appears in the header. What happens if you have a professional logo made for your site, and you upload that into the header. (now your header is a jpg file) Will the search engines still be able to see the title of your blog?LOL

Yes. Search Engines will still be able to view the title of your blog because the title also appears in the browser window and remains coded into the site. Also, if you ever want to use an image but still maintain relevance, alt text should be filled in with your key term to give the serps an idea of what the image is.

Well to be honest with you April I have never went the route that you are going for so I can't really say how that would workout. In the rare case that I wanted to have a site constructed how you have described I would design the site and then just add a wordpress blog to the actual site and I have only done this once.

As for the plugin mentioned I guess it could work if the plugin works properly and is updated frequently along with WP. There are ways to add post to your nav bar but it would require a keen understanding of CSS (which I don't have

). I say go for it though. Pages automatically have seo friendly permalinks and can be tagged so provided the plugin works accurately it should work out just fine.

Hey, don't feel bad, I don't get CSS either. In fact, I get hives when I think about learning it. It's probably all in my head though and really not all that hard to understand. Just when you are trying to learn all kinds of other things about IM, thinking about learning another language (code) makes my head spin!

I am just wondering with on page SEO what would be a good convention to name URLs, img alt and a href title attributes?

Say the keyword is 'dog grooming'.

For the URL is it best to use: 'doggrooming.html' or 'dog-grooming.html'?

As for the img and a href is it at all a good idea to name it as
'dog grooming'?

  On page SEO is extremely important, especially when talking in the realm of URL structure. It's a subtlety that many people don't even think about, but that fact that you are speaks greatly about your skill level. Here is my recommendation.
  
  Separate each keyword in the phrase with a dash. Using your example, your best Url structure would be http://www.yourdogtrainingsite.com/dog-grooming
  
  As for image alt text, you want to make sure that you're not going to accidentally adventure into the keyword spam category by using it, though it's essential. If it's a site about dog grooming, the proper alt text would indeed by "dog grooming" unless this pushes your keyword density into the realm of spam (10% and above). As I say in The Blogging Bible, keyword density is somewhat of a mechanism used to NOT rank sites rather than rank them. Overuse it with alt text and the spam filer goes up.

am doing some links for a site of a freind, it was ranking top 20, now its slipped down to 32.
and all that in two weeks meanwhile Ive been getting around 10 PR4-6 links for it, with keyword anchor text from highly relevant sources
Now I know 10 backlinks isnt a lot, its a favour not a clontract, but with those PRs and relevancy etc I was hoping it would push the site up Google, not down.
Any generic reasons (the webpage content hasnt been changed) that you may be able to point me to

This is a very interesting question. Without knowing the specifics about the site or the URL, it's impossible to diagnose the exact cause that the site has slipped even when adding strong sites linking to it. Here is one possibility.

Since you're adding powerful links to the site on a daily basis, you're keeping your linking campaign at a consistent rate, so that's a great thing, but there is one other factor. Are all of these sites Blogs? Are they all Forums? A lot of times, when you receive links from only a single type of site it looks extremely unnatural.

Secondly, when linking to the site do you use the same anchor text every time? If you do, it might be cause for an over optimization penalty in the same ballpark of keyword spam.

My suggestion: Get links from different types of sites and vary your anchor text in your links. From the information given, I can't tell which one of these problems you're facing, but it's safe to say that it's probably one of the two.

Early in my SEO career, I wanted to rank for a certain term so I built all my links using that anchor text and I would drop in ranking when I added new links. I was under penalty for anchor text spam. When I started linking using secondary terms I wanted to rank for as anchor text, my site started shooting my immediately. One lesson I learned the hard way. Mjb,

This is easily corrected, as Google looks at your overall anchor text density, not the order in which they were placed. Just start building links to your site with different anchor text links that you have been doing, to different pages and you'll see increases as your penalty gets taken away!

Hey Thomas! First off, let me say WOW, the information found in your Blogging Bible is awesome! I would recommend anyone who is serious at all about blogging read it. It's a must have.

I have yet another blogging question....well I don't know if it is necessarily just about blogging, but I installed a WP plugin that gives me advanced editing options, and one of the options is adding layers. This allows me to place text and images anywhere on the page and position them excatly where I want them. It seems to be too good to be true, there has to be some kind of drawback. Are layers bad for SEO?

Not at all! The older the site the better when you're talking about SEO! Sorry it took me so long to respond, I've been away for a few days visiting a friend. Generally, older sites are less spammy, are more authoritative and offer significant strength.

I have a mixed view about using blog comments links because is almost imporsible to get do follow blogs in some niches. So, my question is how do you do blog commenting. You go for relevant blogs or high page rank blogs in irrelevant blogs. Can these last type of links hurt your rankings?

  Thanks for the question. Blog Comments are a strange beast. To answer your questions, I go for the highest PR and page strength I can. I don't care if it's from a relevant site because you can "inject" relevance with anchor text. In a natural link profile, you wouldn't have only sites about xbox linking to your xbox site. You'd have sites about video gaming, television, playstation sites, etc so getting your relevance as close as possible is not actually helping you. It's page strength that really matters in the end.
  
  It's not that other aspects of linking aren't important, but more than often people focus on subtleties and sacrifice the big picture for them. The big picture is page strength.

  Also, You might do well optimizing for less competitive terms while going after this one. Often time they take much less time to rank and much less effort. This will give you a nice baseline conversion rate to work with and compare with you main term as time goes on. hope this helps.

Hi Thomas,

I have about 200 new websites I just put up. They are all privately registered, but all on the same shared C Block, and a lot of them have similar words in the domain name, like "Houston Texas" or "Garments for Sale". They all have original content, but because of the close domain names, close niche (different, but close), and they are all using the Thesis WP theme, I am worried about getting the same links to all of them.

I just don't want the websites to have all the same links and leave footprints. Also, I don't want links from bad neighborhoods or properties linking to porn and gambling websites.

My only concerns are having good clean links that won't get me in the sandbox or trip a filter.

How should I get different links for them?

If I submit all the sites to Web directories, Web 2.0 sites, Articles links, Press release links for them will it work ??

In order to leave no trace what so ever, you really want to split the websites up across a large number of IP addresses, but if your on shared webhosting, with a company like hostgator, this won't matter, because hostgator IP's host thousands of websites for example.

Your going to need to build seperate backlinks for each website, which shouldn't be a problem, depending on what your doing, I personally suggest you build high quaitly backlinks with blog commenting, it also gives you a endless supply of backlinks from differnt websites, so no website with will the same backlinks twice.

Article linking would work nicely as well, but you'd need to keep it to 1 author account to 1 website, so you'd need to be able to manage/update 200 accounts, which would be a pain.

I am planning to offer SEO consulting to small businesses and I am trying to clarify few things regarding 301 Redirect & Offsite SEO.

I will be using an aged domain of mine and create a directory for each client

Olddomain.com/client1-Keyword/

Then 301 Redirect it to the client's domain : client.com

1. Can I create a multiple pages Silo inside Olddomain.com/client1-Keyword/

then Redirect Olddomain.com/client1-Keyword/ -> client.com root ?

Will most of the link juice pass through even though it's from a folder to a root domain (where I will not be able to recreate the same silo structure and pages).

2. I've heard that 301 redirects do not pass anchor text if old page is too different from new page.

I was thinking of making copy of the client index page (with hi/her permission of course) on Olddomain.com/client1-Keyword/ and build my silo from there. So when it 301 redirects, content will be quite similar and anchor text can pass through.

3. I will build all my links to Olddomain.com/client1-Keyword/

If I do a backlinkwatch or yahoo site explorer on the client.com domain, will all the links i've done show up there ?
if they don't show up, would the link juice still pass to the client.

I am aware from Matt Cutts response that some link juice may be lost in a 301 redirect but it's a small price to pay to be able to control your Offsite SEO strategy

Don't know if you could address this question.

We all know how important unique content is to our websites. One of the methods that I have heard recently through the grapevine is using google translate to translate articles from English to French and back to English, which I read actually makes the content unique.

Now this make no sense whatsoever to me, but I thought I would ask if you have heard about this method.

The other method is to get articles from other countries with differing languages and translate them to english, which actually makes more sense, but was wondering if Google would not detect this its just a translated article?

How I made sense asking this?

I've heard of this method and I tried to use it a few times but honestly the results are less than reliable. You can trick the search engines into thinking that these are unique, well written content rich articles but in the end as the SEs evolve your site is going to get blown out of the top 10. I have always been of the mindset that if you make quality sites, there is nothing that anybody can do to ban you, kick you out of the serps, etc. It works, but I wouldn't recommend it, but again this is just my personal preference. Ok. My niche is Fish oils and to be more specific: "Coromega fish oil".

I chose a non competitive niche (using a special membership site), so that i could get top rankings.

The keyword Coromega fish oil has

2900 searches
2400 sites

Here is my site: CoromegaFishOil.org

I see it sometimes on page 1, but then, after a few minutes, it disappears. I mean, i can't find it anywhere. Like it is being deindexed or something.

How important are site-wide links?

I've seen a few very decent keywords of which all of the top 5 ranking sites' backlinks consist only of links from 1 website and are site-wide.

The PR of these links ussually varies between 0-3. Seems to be that it would be fairly easy to beat these pages, though they are in very crowded by internet marketeers.

Like to hear your opinion.

Site-Wide links never did anything for me that a non site wide link would. Honestly I don't pay attention to them or try to go for them because I have a few on each of my sites and I don't see much of a benefit beyond that of the page's strength which would be there if it were a non site wide link anyway. Hope this helps.

Yeah. They're easy to beat given that the sitewide links don't portray the normal characteristics of really powerful links (aka links from CNN.com or a .gov).

Man... this is really weird.
One moment i didn't see my site on page 1, the next it's there. And i was logged out. Then i've logged in and it still was there. After 2 minutes it disappeared again from page 1 (or from any pages).
Although i did find a post from my blog on page 4 or 5.

Thanks for you question again. This could be an extreme Google dance due to your competition, though I doubt it when looking at your niche. I would say this is probably because your site is new (if it's not let me know) and Google is trying to decide where to place you. If it's not that, it will be data center catch-up and placement which always comes to a specific placement in the end.

If your site is new it could be these two things but rest assured that your site will eventually (in the next month) come to terms with where it's ranking and you'll get a base. I hope this helps. The search engines can be wonky and when somebody bounces like this it's usually from one of three factors:

1) Your site is new

2) You're logged in at the time of viewing results

3) Your competition is doing great SEO

Hello Thomas,

I have a site which rank quite good in google.
3 days before i checked the ranking result, it was #1 for 2 of my long tail keywords.
And the URL that get #1 position is mysitename.com without the www in front.

Today I checked again and I saw my ranking drop to #4 spot. And i noticed that the URL change. Now google rank my site with www in front. so it is www.mysitename.com at #4 spot

I know google treat the URL with www and without www differently, but then why google suddenly change the indexed site URL from "no www" to "with www"?

Anyway to force google rank my site without www?
I asked this because when i build backlink, i focus all of them to mysitename.com without the www.

mysitename.com have 1,030,000 backlinks
www.mysitename.com only have 371 backlinks

Thanks for the question. Your problem is not an unusual one. You've got links pointing to both versions of your site so Google perceives them as being separate pages. This is why you're bouncing around like that and seeing two different URL structures on your site.

If you want to rank the non www version, all you need to do is implement a redirect on the www.mysite.com to redirect to http://mysite.com

This way, all of your 300+ links from the www.mysite.com version will pass into the one you want to rank and the www.mysite.com version will be deindexed.

Thanks for your answer.

Today I checked the result again and almost fainted. Now google ranked almost all my keywords under the URL with www in front, previously it was only 20% of them.

My question is why google has more flavor on my url "with www" which is having much much less backlink compare to the "non www" version?
(371 : 1.3 million)

Now I am confused, which one should i change to redirect?
"www" to "no www"
OR
"no www" to "www"

And when I build more backlink, which one should i point to? "www" or "no www'

Or I should wait for some periods for google to settle down, then decide?

I've got a question. I just discovered a very nice niche, for my language (Dutch). My competition is mainly ebay-like sites, 7/10 on first page are such sites. Are they easy to beat? Because the ad itself is pretty worthless but the site as a whole is worth alot. Are they easier or harder to beat Google position-wise than other sites?

Thanks for the question. These types of questions come up all the time but I always judge a site based upon it's strength. Generally, since these types of sites have so many pages indexed and probably a decent amount of backlinks to each of these pages, they're going to be pretty strong.

It really depends on how broad the niche is, how many backlinks they've got, how many pages they've got indexed and how long they've been around. These are all questions that we don't yet have answers to but once you answer them, you'll have an overall gauge of how hard they are going to be to beat out of the top 10.

I would recommend checking them in Yahoo! Site Explorer and checking their backlink count, their pages indexed, etc. Once you've got this I would do a check on how old the domain is.

Also, if they're sub-pages of the site rather than homepages they're easier to beat. I hope this helps. Let me know if I can do anything else to help!

One of these online-selling-sites is one of the biggest Dutch sites in general, that one would be impossible to beat. But it's not the mainpage that I want to pass in the rankings but an ad. Just like on ebay. Someone sells product X, he puts it on the site and people bid on it for 3 weeks and then it gets sold so the page gets removed. However, poeple keep on creating this kind of ads all the time on the same website, so every ad is getting indexed by Google. If I create one static site that will be there for months/years, I think Google will prefer my site over the ads?
Also, the mainpage will have alot of backlinks but the ad itself will have close to none, because the page only exists for a few weeks, until the product gets sold.

I understand now! Sorry about that. There is but one thing you'll need to outrank these ads. The reason that these ads are ranking in the top 10 upon getting indexed is because these sites have extremely high trust and strength. This is the only reason for subpages indexing so high.

Since there are so many pages being put up every day Google views this as a "news" source. Now, it's not actually news but it behaves in the same manner that news does. Google wants to make sure to index these high because it thinks that it's of a time sensitive nature (which ads are).

Though it may sound complex, these are actually going to be easier to beat because you're not competing with a homepage, but ad pages based upon the homepage's strength. Google will prefer your static page when you get the kind of strength that surpasses these ad pages. Hope this helps.

I would go ahead and put the redirect on the www.mysite.com version and make it redirect to your http://mysite.com version. This will eliminate your duplicate page problem in Google and it will also take the links that the www.mysite.com version has and pass their strength to http://mysite.com version.

In the future, I would only build links to the version you want to keep around (the http://mysite.com version in my opinion).

I've never taken the plunge for it. It seems rather expensive to me for a directory though I've heard good things. To me, I'f im spending 300 bucks on something it should rank my website my itself. For me, it's not a question whether it works or not but I haven't needed it in the past to rank my sites 1, so I don't view it as being important.

There are some that swear by it though, but I just haven't had experience with it. It would be wrong for me to offer advice on something I've never tested.

Alright, thanks a lot for your advices.

Another question regarding the directory submission. I read ur reply for nota-bene, and you said you never tried yahoo directory, how about the other free directories? Do you still recommend submitting them too?

Profile linking is damm hot now, I chat with a forum profile backlink service provider, he recommend me to take up a 10k backlink package. I a bit worry that may cause google to sandbox my website if I build such a massive links in the short period, but the service provider said it is very safe and he never had problem of google sandbox before with his clients.

Any thought? Good to go?

Thanks for the question again. I wouldn't rely on free directories but they certainly can't hurt. They're links. Honestly, even though I said I submitted to some directories in a previous post I haven't used them to the extent of testing them.

As far as the profile linking goes yeah, it is really hot right now! I love profiles and they can provide the ammunition that you need to blast past a brick wall in ranking that otherwise you couldn't get past. They're incredibly powerful, but I wouldn't suggest doing 10k. I've never had a problem ranking my sites with something like 80 profile links (sometimes less) if you get good profiles.

But yes, Profiles are extremely effective. I've even launched a WSO providing them because I think they're tremendous and everybody who has bought the service has agreed.

This are my questions:

1) I have 3 sites with the same hosting service i checked and all 3 have different ips i mean the first 2 values 69.178.xx.xx are the same for all 3 but the last 2 values a different. Their page rank are 5,2 and 0 i want to link from 5 and 2 to 0 with backlinks, is this good, or google will take them as backlinks from same ip or hosting, are they valuable???

2)Follow or nofollow... what is the main difference.. i run my sites on link diagnosis and i see some backlinks with no follow tag, are they as good as follow ones, is worth spending my time building this links???

3) I have run my seo competition and my first competitor has backlinks in the frontpage of other sites in my country not .com ( perhaps he bought them), is this better for seo have backlinks from my country websites rather than .com backlinks?

4) Is more powerful a backlink in a blogroll than i a profile link?

5) Do you know it what is based the link strenght in linkdiagnosis, becuase i see that backlinks form 4 have more strenght than a backlink from a pr6.

I would be much thankful is you respond me these questions.

Thanks for the questions. These are some that are actually going to be quite useful to the community I believe. Let me answer them in order!

1. Backlinks are valuable whether or not they're from the same IP address and I often link back and forth to many of my niche sites. They provide linkjuice just like any other backlink. The only thing is that you're susceptible to a leveler or a penalty if you've got a link profile of only these links. Others may have experienced different results than this but yes, I do interlink between sites.

2. Dofollow links are better, but nofollow links are just as important. If you've got a site consisting of 400 dofollow links and 0 nofollow links, you run the risk of arousing suspicion. This is extremely unlikely to happen in a natural link profile therefore a mix of dofollow and nofollow is needed to gain favor in the SERPS.

3. Domain extensions (except .gov) and country of origin are irrelevant. I wouldn't focus on where the site is hosted, what country or origin the site is, etc and focus solely of strength, domain age etc. These are the things that truly affect rankings, not country of origin.

4. It all depends on the site's strength but generally yes, blogroll links are going to be more powerful than profile links because the link points to your site from their homepage. The homepage of a site is always the hub from which the strength of the site flows so by default, blogroll links will (generally) be more powerful than profile links because it's a homepage vs. subpage scenario.

5. I'm not familiar with LinkDiagnosis so I am unable to help here.

Was searching for information of domain name SEO and came across this thread which definitely has some good tips but is the above really true? Are you saying that a .tv, .me or .us, carries the same weight as a .com, .net or .org? How about .info?

What's your take on using hyphens in domain names? Was reading an article recently that says multi-keyword domain names are actually better from an SEO point of view with hyphens between the words as Google treats hyphens and (dots) as spaces so hyphens separate out the keywords so that Google can understand them whereas it is unable to parse the keywords out if not separated.

Would double hyphens (--) be treated the same as single ones or would Google penalize these as being spammy?

If an exact match keyword domain is not available does adding an additional word to the domain dilute it?

Does the order of the keywords matter, e.g., is keyword2-keyword1.tld any less effective than keyword1-keyword2.tld?

Would be interested in your thoughts.

Is there duplicate content issue still there? Is that Okay to submit the same article to 10-15 directories? Are the backlinks from those submissions do have more value in the eye of Google same as the value 1-1 (I mean 1 article to 1 article directory ONLY)?

This is a huge problem that people do generally have when doing profiles. The reason that they're hard to get indexed is that if they're even remotely spammy at all they're likely to be deleted before indexation. Profile sites are heavily moderated and to get links to stick (which most won't) you'll have to take every effort to make it as legitimate as possible. Things that help with legitimacy include:

1) Mentioning the name of the site your posting on in your bio. This gives proof to admins that it wasn't done by an automated program. However, if you are using automated programs, use Macros.

2) Uploading an avatar to your profile. Why would you take the time to upload an avatar if you were spamming?

3) Flattery works. In your bio, mention how awesome the site is and how you can't wait to be a member and contribute every bit of information you get to the community, etc.

I would also recommend (if you so choose) to go back every month and actually contribute something to these sites if they're forums but this is optional. Not only does it keep your profiles around, you actually add something to the community in doing so.

Whats your opinion on the importance of on-page seo. I ask because I recently lauched a site that I admit does not have many monthly searches [blogflippingtips (dot)com], however, after doing all my on page seo work, I turned my privacy setting off (that is I allowed Google to spider the site) and it opened up #1 on page 1 right after indexing.

It now has a few links pointing to it but it still surprised me that it opened after indexing at the top spot with just on-page seo. I say this because I know off site seo is looked at with more value by Google than on page.

Just would like to here your opinion regarding on page seo?

Hi Thomas;

I have a couple of questions on building out a good backlink structure, specifically with Social Bookmarks and blog posts - namely, will overall SERP results be better if all the links point directly towards your money site, or if a certain percentage, say 70 to 80, point instead towards articles and web 2.0 properties that in turn link to your site, and the remaining 20 to 30 percent just point directly to the money site. The reason I ask is that I would prefer to implement the latter strategy, but most outsourcing for blog posts and social bookmarks will only point to your money site, not to a secondary layer before the money site. Does it make a difference?

Frank,

First of all congratulations on indexing at number 1 for your term. It doesn't get any better than that. As far as On Page stuff goes...yes it matters quite a bit actually. Here are the things that I do every time I make a site in order of importance.

1. Proper URL structure (http://www.yoursite.com/your-post-title). Having your post title gives more relevance as you've got your keywords in there.

2. Headings. I enclose my search terms as H1s on all my posts. Believe it or not, this has moved me up a few spots when doing it on older blogs.

3. Set the homepage to a static page so I'm not showing duplicate content by listing all my posts on the homepage.

These are three very easy things I do every time and I've noticed a nice increase in efficiency as opposed to my old sites. I hope this helps and answers your question. Thanks Frank

  Thanks for the question. The linking strategy that you're referring to is called a link backrub and it's used all the time by people who want to control the speed at which they gain links. It's not good when you gain links at a volatile rate, but you and I both know that the more links you build the better off you are (generally).
  
  Say you've been building 20 links a day to your site but you want to build more. You don't want to go and just blast 100 links to your site in one day, so people will use a link backrub to gain strength by linking to other sites that link to you. This keeps Google from saying "Whoa! That's a lot of links in one day" but you still get strength from it.
  
  To answer your initial question, it's good to do both. I keep a firm daily linking strategy schedule with my sites, but If I feel like building more I will almost always use the strategy you asked about. It works!

  Thomas, I see a lot of people saying this is a proper URL structure. Maybe it is, maybe it's not. For blogs with a small number of posts this may be OK, but if you are planing to have a lot of posts/traffic, this may lead to performance issues.

  I would go ahead and build for your main term "brides maids" because that's ultimately what you're trying to rank for. If at any moment the links with this anchor text stop working and you don't see any movement, I would go ahead and start linking with "brides" and "maids" again. All of these links are going to help but you don't want to build too many of any given anchor text because you'll run the risk of penalty if you do.
  
  Therefore, you're doing exactly what you need to be doing. You have actually pinpointed one of the points in The Blogging Bible that I explain in there. Great Question!

Glassjaw009: I do have a SEO question. I got a WP blog up, and all coming up great. Indexed under 5 days, spiders coming for the new posts every day, and long tail keyword rank: 1, 2, 4, and 6 is one of the articles going back to my site. There are 897.000 results for the keyword but suppose not enough traffic. Should I start concentrating on ranking for the short keyword that brings in more traffic? Is it a good tactic? I get traffic from blog directories, PR, and articles, but no SE traffic showing up yet. (Only 12 days though)

Watson,

I've experienced this phenomenon when commenting on Wordpress blogs but not for any other blogging platforms. I normally go back and check to see if my comment was posted and more times than not it is. I'm not sure if it's an inherent problem with Wordpress, one of their plugins do this or whatever.

I can see how it would be frustrating and unfortunately I don't have an answer for you on how to avoid this as the setting would have to be changed my site site administrator (most likely). Sorry Watson. I wish I could help with this more.

Tell me what is the time that is good for static website to load. I know that it should not irritate visitors. Still some of my friends are facing this problem even if they don't have much site loading time and the visitors are not getting frustated.

So there might be sure that loading time is made something specific by Google for static and dynamic websites...

Flaura,

That's fantastic! Ranking that fast even for a term with 897,000 is great but if you aren't getting any traffic yet I suggest doing two things.

First, wait. Google has different data centers at different locations and it's quite possible that you are seeing the data center that updated first with rankings, therefore you won't see traffic until the others update since your site is pretty new. I would keep an eye on you search term traffic in the next coming weeks and it will probably go up as data centers catch up.

Secondly, if you're already ranking easily for this term, it is indeed a fantastic idea to start ranking for some more robust keywords. This is ultimately how a site gets big. I illustrated earlier in the thread my ranking strategies and it goes something like this:

For a video game site:

1st keyword I go for: mario kart 64 tips
2nd: mario kart 64
3rd: mario kart
4th: mario

This is just an example. I haven't done research on this niche or the keyword listed above, but I feel this displays an accurate representation of the method I use. If you're ranking for your terms now, go ahead and start optimizing for more competitive terms!

Blog Directories are okay, press releases are okay, articles are good but I would work in some profiles and blog comments at this time, then focus on link emails in the next month. If you do this, you'll be able to rank for your great term you've got in your head now (apart from it being "news" or something like that). Hope this helps.

  Some of these pages allow 3 anchor links per profile.

Thanks for the question! While you will certainly not be penalized for doing so, it won't have an effect. The theory that Google doesn't count multiple backlinks from the same page to the same URL is correct. You're not hurting yourself by doing this, but I would instead link to some of your post pages, category pages, subpages etc. You'll see more effect from this.

  Thanks for the great question. In terms of stength, it's true that you'll want to interlink your pages. There are multiple benefits from this. First of all if your site is new it'll get spiders to every page and the pages will update more often increasing your site's freshness in Google's eyes when you update. This can in turn be beneficial for rankings in the short term and sometimes in the long.
  
  Secondly, interlinking (as I've used it) is a tool to consolidate your site's strength. Generally speaking, your homepage will always be the strongest page on your site, therefore I find in beneficial to link from my homepage to my posts. I don't generally link from post to post because pagerank and strength always flows downward.
  
  I generally have my sites set up like this:
  
  1. Links from Homepage to Categories (gives strength to category pages)
  2. Links from Category Pages to Post pages (gives strength to post pages)
  3. Links from post pages to post pages (increases spider visibility and gives strength to other posts)
  
  This ensures that all of your pages get the most amount of strength they need without leaking any out unnecessarily or passing strength inefficiently.

Hi Glassjaw,

Great thread and very sound advice. I have a dilemma, I have a website that requires a great deal of my time and I have big plans which will require even more. I've asked in the forums here about SEO services, mainly to get a recommendation. I am repeatedly told that I should just learn it and do it myself.

I'm fine with that... I could even say that 'I know how' to perform both on-page and off-page SEO. IMHO, that's a lot like saying 'I know how to paint and sculpt'. We all know how, but how many of us are really good at it?

So my dilemma is that I definitely want to improve my SEO but I'm not sure if my time is better spent doing it myself or hiring somebody to do it so I can concentrate on my business. Is it really just 1-2-3 or is there some 'art' to SEO? It's not good enough for me to just do SEO... I want it done right whether it's by me or somebody else.

What can you say to a person like me, who has a budget he is currently spending on more traditional advertising? Would you say, I should be spending my budget on SEO or should I continue to advertise and just do the SEO myself?

Honestly, I've been asked about this countless times with clients as well as friends who are into SEO too. While I can't provide an answer that "blankets" all cases, I can provide one on a one by one basis.

First of all, I'm extremely glad you pointed out some of the details in your posts. This helps me to analyze what level of SEO you need, how much you're going to need, etc.

I provide SEO as a service to my clients and depend on that money as my main income so what I might tell you in the coming paragraph might come as a surprise. That being said, I'm committed to answering these questions as truthfully and as unbiased as possible, so here goes...

If it's in your budget, I'd go ahead and hire somebody reputable for your SEO. Honestly, If you get someone good who knows their SEO and is honest about the work...you're going to see an increase in revenue equal or greater than the cost they're charging. This is how I keep my clients. I offer them (basically) money at a discount. They pay me a sum per month and I generate them an amount greater or equal to that sum. This is how SEO works. Here comes the part you might be surprised to hear from an SEO firm.

While you're paying them for SEO services...learn as much as you can from them. They don't want to lose you as a client so they'll tell you what they're doing if you just ask. Once you've got the knowledge you need, you can make the decision to do it yourself. Is it self destructive for me to give this kind of advice? Yes. Is it detrimental to give this kind of advice...probably..but it's honest.

I hope this helps. Keep in mind that you should do your research when dealing with SEO "Experts". There are tons of snake oil salesmen out there looking to grab a quick buck from you (especially in a recession).

Posed this question a number of times and hadn't gotten much of a response. Maybe you have the answer...

If I target the phrase "General Contractor New Jersey" as my keyword phrase and optimize my website for it, will I also be optimized for "New Jersey General Contractor?" Google's keyword tool doesn't seem to make the distinction so I'm wondering if the phrase is interchangeable. In other words, I get the exact same number of search results for the phrase regardless if "New Jersey" is before or behind "General Contractor." I'm asking because I want to use the keyword phrase in my domain. Am I safe either way?

Thanks for the question. Normally I'm not too keen on social bookmarking for my blogs or money sites because I haven't seen too much of an effect personally.

However, if you're going to start a social bookmarking site I think it would be wise to start your advertising campaign on other social bookmarking sites. Using them to leverage your own site and people will start flocking to it (simply because they already like social bookmarking).

Speaking for this niche, traditional SEO might not be as useful as in other niches simply because your average user isn't searching for "Social Bookmarking" to get to Digg, Reddit, etc. They just know that there are cool pieces of information on these sites and they probably got there through a friend referral or something of that nature. I'd try and go more viral with your campaign. If you need to sponsor blog posts on popular blogs that might help too. You know...tech blogs, music blogs, meem blogs etc.

Thanks for the questions and for posting in the thread. When talking about domain extensions I didn't actually mean to say they're "irrelevant" but meant to say that one should apply the old philosophy of not judging a book by it's cover. For instance in the original question, Piscola mentioned that his/her competitors had backlinks from sites that weren't .com and asked if it would be better to get links like these as opposed to .com links.

I meant that these links that his/her competitor has should not be discounted just because they're not from .com sites and that they're worth looking at still. I prefer .com, .net and .org sites because the generally perform better for me.

In a nutshell I believe that .com, .net and .org sites are generally stronger and more reputable, however one shouldn't distrust or disregard links from non .com sites but should judge the site strength as the only factor.

As far as hyphens go, I don't use them but it's just personal preference. I've had a few of them and they generally don't perform as well as exact match domains in my tests. Generally, I try to make my sites look as non spammy as possible for a few reasons:

a) keep user bounce rate down

b) escape existing Google penalties

c) escape future Google penalties (perhaps the discounting of hyphens in the future)

In my experience they're harder to rank and the chances of getting a hypenated domain ranked upon indexation are lower than those of exact match domain names even though the points you make about spacing seem to make sense.

Also, I've seen exceptions to the rules I state above, but it's often because a site gets ranked solely upon strength and not upon relevance (as Xfactor's method and direct match domain names use). You can rank any site with any extension, hyphenated or not for anything. Whether or not it happens fast or efficiently is another matter.

Hi Thomas,

I had engage a good SEO service for my site and they are showing a very good result. However, one of my keywords always stay at #2 and I can't beat the site on #1 for last few months.

I was wondering if it would be easier to beat my competitor using a automated submission and submit thousands of competitor site links to banned sites and porn sites ? While im building good SEO for my own site.

friend,

I don't generally use article spinning software just because even though I'm making micro niche sites, I still want the content to be relevant and helpful to anybody who comes to the site. I have dabbled with it in the past but like you said I haven't come up with anything other that jumbled up, grammatically incorrect articles. That being said, article spinning does bring traffic.

Generally, you'll want to spin the article to at least 30% uniqueness and the most useful spinning program I've come up with so far is "The Best Spinner". Used Content Boss for a while but was disappointed with the limited amount of spins per month you can do, especially for the price. I would say go with The Best Spinner if you are into spinning.

I have an SEO question. Many times I run across sites that rank great but have crap for content, which makes me question everything I've learned about SEO.

Example:
For a google search of "ged test online", this site ranks #3 gedtestonline.com

It has a page rank of 2 for some reason, but it has only 7 backlinks, and no content whatsoever....just advertising links and related search links.

It's ranking higher than pages with thousands of backlinks and pageranks of 5.

The only thing it seems to have going for it is the site name and page title.

I just don't understand how it is ranking so well, when I struggle for decent rankings with dozens of backlinks, edu links, unique articles, etc. etc.

Clearly there is something to SEO that is outside of what is being taught.

Thoughts?

Here's another anomaly. Do an exact google search for "wedding invitation stationery" and check out the number 1 site. It has zero page rank, and a total of 2 backlinks.

When you look at the site, it's all simple text, no graphics at all, like something from 1995. AND there is no monetization at all....just internal links as far as I can see.

What is it's SEO secret :confused: ??

Hi Glassjaw,

I'm helping a friend rank higher than a competitor in the UK its really weird because "site x" competitor is number on the top spot in google for kw "tribute acts" and yet has 490 yahoo links as compared to the next google ranked "site y"which has 4,040 links. The alexa rank is 1,393,000 for site x and the site under him, site y has an alexa rank of 315,966 i don't understand how the site x gets top spot in google than site y which has 4000 odd links and more traffic and has more web pages as well. Hope you can help! Best Sarah xx

Hi Thomas,

Another question that need your help. Let say i would like to do SEO for keywords "Do you realize?" and "Do you realise?".

1. How should i put it in my meta title and meta description ? Should i put my meta title as "Do you realise? | Do you realize?" Looks not natural by Google i think..

2. if my URL link is mysite.com/do-you-realise ... can this be done if I would like to do SEO for keyword "do you realize" ?

I need your tips..

I have a question regarding youtube backlinks,is it advisable to build backlinks for youtube videos so that that video will appear on search results in the first page?
Also how are some videos appearing in search results even if it has very less views.So how did they manage to get their site higher in the search results?Did they build backlinks for that youtube video or is it because their videos became very popular and got many subscribers and views?

So glad to come across your invitation for questions. I am pulling my hair out and need some serious advice. I have a Jewelry site, it is hosted by Yahoo. the site has been online for about 5 years but I really started working at it last April. Optimized for keywords, concentrated on Meta Tags, Description good quality content. I submit bookmarks, write articles, blogs etc. I submi my catalog to Google Product Search. I have several pages that show up on the 1st page of Google. I only get about 30 visitors a day. No matter what I do, it's like I have hit a glass ceiling.

Here is my question... Would it be possible for you to look at my site and also at my google webmaster tools site (I have no problem giving you access PM me) to tell me if I have messed something up? I know they have me indexed 3 times.
wwwdotkandkjewelrydotcom, storedotkandkjewelrydotcom and kandkjewelrydotcomI am just wondering if there is some penalty.

P.S. I am a total newbie at this not an SEO Girl....I am a Jewelry Girl.

If you're finding YouTube vidoes with no backlinks in the top 10 results for a term, you're most likely seeing videos that are in a small targeted niche and that have titles that nearly exactly match the search term. Often, the directly matched term will be a less profitable cousin to the real money term.

For instance, you might see a top 10 YouTube result when you search "how to fold wedding napkins" but it will be nowhere to be found when searching "wedding napkins" because the latter is the term people are going for. Hope this helps.

There is definitely a problem here with the current state of your site right now. If they've got you indexed with the www. and without the www. then it means somehow your site is getting links to both versions, thus creating two sites that are exactly the same but appear as different sites in the search engine's eyes. This is a problem not only because of duplicate content but because all of the link strength should be consolidated to one site. I would do one of these two things (preferably the first one).

1. Implement a permanent redirect to the version of the site with more strength from the version with less. For example, if your main site that you're building links to is the www. version, put a redirect on the non www. version to the www. version. This makes all of the strength you've acquired run to only one site. The search engines will also deindex the lesser of the versions and that will take care of the duplicate site issue.

2. If you can't redirect, go to webmaster tools and request that they deindex the version of your site you don't want indexed (the lesser of the two in terms of strength and ranking). Hope this helps!.

Which one is better for SEO to improve keyword ranking :

Own Website <- EzineArticles <- Squidoo <- lots of backlinks, profiles link, blogs
........................................<- ArticleDirectories <- lots of backlinks, profiles link

so it is like a tree with branch which is called link magnet. Your website has only 1 backlink.

OR

Own Website <- profile links, ezinearticle, all article directories, blogs

Hi Thomas, here's a problem that I've run into more than once.

I'm helping a local company with their seo. Their website has 2 versions of the home page, the first is just the domain name plus extension, the second has /home/ appended.

The second home page looks to have been created automatically by having a tab called "home" in the nav bar i.e. page names are automatically generated to be the same as the nav bar titles.

This means (with respect to the home page) a) There are 2 of them, and b) Internal links point to the /home/ page and external links to the other "home" page.

It's something that I've seen before, particularly on e-commerce sites and sites built with Dreamweaver where an index.htm (or html) page is created in addition to the plain home page url.

I'm assuming that the answer it to 301 re-direct the additional pages to the true home page but any other tips would be welcomed.

My site is currently ranking fairly well for many searched phrases, however "fairly well" means while it's getting hits, it's ranking in the teens and twenties. It's on a drupal platform, what is the best way to kick all of the phrases up to the top of the first page?

I should add that they are not terribly competitive either.

Do you know how to do 301 redirect for windows server?I had a client who told me he did the 301 redirect on IIS level, is it the proper way?

Second question is how long it take for the search engine to identify the redirect? Any way to make Google notify it quicker?

Hey Thomas Mad props to you for staying with this and answering all of our questions. You are the man.

I have a question about backlinks or more specifically backlinking strategy.

I have sites on the 2nd page of Google right now for keyword terms that have less then 2 million results in Google when doing a search without quotes.

-The sites are about 9 months old
-have lots of unique content on them
-have good on-page SEO
-backlinks so far have been social bookmarking, high PR blog commenting, Video submissions with tubemogule and mininets with Web 2.0 sites like live journal, ezine articles, hub pages etc pointing to my domain

my goal is to get each site to the number one spot in Google

However SOC on the first page is pretty strong for both keywords

Lots of sites with high PR, age, and thousands of backlinks as well as amazon.com and several merchant sites that are selling/promoting the same product I am.

what would you suggest I do to beat them out?

could you recommend any powerful back link services?

Sorry if this has been asked already, read every post on first few pages but didn't see it.

I am building niche blogs, and want to get inbound links to them... So here is my question:

"Does Google only count 1 inbound link from each c class, so say for example i get 200 links inbound to a site from the same ip address, how will Google handle that please? Will it count it as 200 inbounds, or as 1? "

It was a little team did. So if I understood correctly that despite the statement in WP can always download the plugin from spam KB and just follow the instructions in Blogging Bible, and I did not remove anything or change anything compared to WP google map ?
