WOW!!! Is this LSI at work?!?!

Early on in my backlinking career I went heavily at this one keyword. Over time I've come to rank #3 for this word.

Now my blog which I was backlinking for, is a one year old PR 3 site that is slowly becoming a real authority site and has all original and interesting/engaging content.

I've noticed that this one site (PR2), obviously owned by someone good at IM & not knowledgeable of my niche AT ALL, is ranking #2 for my main keyword...

So I did a little investigating and it turns out that this site is ranking #1 for at least 10 keywords my site SHOULD be ranking for lol.

A little further investigation shows that his backlinking profile has about 1/4th of my backlinks (most pr 0/1, mine being high pr). But they are WIDELY spread across different search terms in my niche...

So is this the product of google's LSI algorithms??

If so, consider my eyes OPEN

  • It could be, why dont you write down the spread of keywords and start doing the same, you already have and established site so it shouldnt take too long to see results.

I would write down the all the keywords and do some heavy backlinking across the board with the keywords, also are you making good use of internal linking?

as do your articles on the site link to other articles on your site for there keywords? as if you are not using this and you have an established site with pagerank and links to different pages in the site then by utalising a good internal linking structure can have great effects accross all your keywords.
  • Great observation Bondtana. LSI is a hotly debated subject and unconfirmed but just going from the Wonder Wheel and related searches I would assume that Google does pay some attention to it. It is very interesting to hear about it from backlinks though.
  • Who knows?

Truth is: sometimes you create and work in a wide spread backlink approach and it does not work. As soon as you get back to "normal" backlinking your rankings go up...

Sometimes it's the opposite... you switch from a normal approach to a wide spread campaign and the results are way better.

As Google algo keeps changing, we need to run after and test, test, test.

BUT if you catch that one in your niche, go work it!!! Wide spread those backlinks and let us know how it goes next weeks!

  • Have you also checked the LSI on his site? How do his pages link up internally? How many related words and phrases does he have within his content?

Also, are all his backlinks pointing back to his main index page or do some of them point to his inner pages.

You also need to look at how many links are pointing to the pages which has HIS links on, and what the theme of those pages are.

Once Google has their algo it's straight forward to implement and tweak as they go along. To unravell an algo, especially a complex one, it could be a never ending task.

If you discover some little tricks and tips though, it makes sense to integrate them into your own SEO to see if they improve rankings.

    • Was investigating some more...

I forgot to mention that the content titles on his site cover all of the keyword bases. Most of his articles do link to another article, or some affiliate stuff. He has a bunch of pages hidden (but indexed) that link to a network of his other sites pushing affiliate stuff and those sites link back to his. Maybe there is some kind of link wheel going on? Don't really know much about linkwheels.

Also of note, his permalink structure has the keywords like this...

      mysite.com/blue-widget-application

      as opposed to

      mysite.com/bluewidgetapplication

      Dont know if that matters...

I think I am going to set up a hidden (from my main blog) subdomain and basically copy his website structure to a t... Maybe that will work?
This guy/gal seems to be a pro. This makes me even more determined to take him out lol. I will report back.
