Changing number of backlinks

Hello Friends

I checked the number of my backlinks using an online tool. First day the number was 384. The next day when I checked it was 163. Again on the third day it showed 384. What could be the possible reason for this?

what tool where you using. The best way to monitor backlinks in my opinin is going to yahoo.com and in the search field type in site:www.yourdomain.com

I have noticed my link numbers get all wonky too. I had 1500 backlinks one day and now for the past week google was saying I only had 200... the kicker is its all my competitors too and even non competitors.

I do know that yahoo will soon take down their site index and that is going to be a real shame and game changer for finding and monitoring backlink numbers. This could simply be the start of the tare down

Nop I mean "site:" you would use "link:" if you wanted Googles backlinks but on yahoo it is different and you will get a more accurate read out of backlinks.

  link:www.yourdomain.com gives the external backlinks to the domain on both big G, and yahoo site explorer
  
  site:www.yourdomain.com gives indexed pages of the domain entered...
