Is Google Flipping Out???

Hey Warriors,

I've got a site that I'm doing some SEO on... Several pages have ranked and are holding. One page in particular --- nada. This page shows as being indexed but doesn't rank for the targeted term at all.

Then, after like 3 months, it appears between 7 - 12 on the big g. It stays there for several days, then whammo, gone. No where to be found.

Look, I'm no newb at seo, and I'm used to the sandbox and the false positioning to see how many clicks and all that junk...

but what's up with this? It doesn't rank at all, (although it was indexed and pages created at the same time already rank consistently), and then the page appears, and then it's gone again?

Any thoughts?

Thanks all.

  • I had sites disappearing for MONTHS where i was 100% clueless why. The best thing you can do is simply keep building good backlinks.
  • Not at all uncommon especially for new sites but I've also heard it happening for new specific pages.

Build a variety of high quality backlinks and consider backlinking your backlinks.

    • you can do the allinachor / allintitle test to see where the penalty is coming from, then go about fixing it.
  • That happens to me before. I'm not sure if it's blog commenting that contributes to this but I just continue to build backlinks and my site came back.

    • That is the mystery of google. They are constatly changing there algorithm. That is why I always recommend that people setup small 5 to 10 page micro sites that are set and forgot.

Don't let google screw with you...
  • Just keep building high quality backlinks and don't worry about it too much. Google kept playing with my site for a long long time and my site disappeared and then reappeared in the index.

I waited some time and then it got back to normal and I started getting higher in rankings.
  • Yea, I wonder whether Google's anti web spam guys figured a great way to mess with marketers would be to add an almost random element to the algorithm.

This would make it hard for people to consistently have their way with the Big G, and most would give up quickly.

I agree that having a fleet of sites across multiple C class IPs is a good way to do things when playing the search engine game.
  • Yeah, I find some of my pages do that too. I figure it must just be updates with the Google algorithm.

Either way, all I do is make sure the content is optimized... preferably in a themed silo... and then keep building quality backlinks with anchor text of the keyword etc. to the silo. Then usually out of nowhere the pages just come back.

Not sure what the go is with Google sometimes but optimized content with lots of quality backlinks works for me.
  • Hi Gary,
I think the Gods of Google do things just to mess with us. Why do they put junk websites that knowbody actually made on the first page of a search and put serious sites over 1000 pages down. It makes no sense. Just keep trying and don't put all your hopes on one website. I have about fifteen websites right now and I plan to get a lot more. I makes no sense to me which ones do well and which ones don't. I try not to worry about it.
    Good Luck
  • Occasionally I experiment with changing something on a page or site. Change the title, description, keywords, content, whatever. I don't change it a lot, just a slight little change. Not always, but sometimes after doing that it will drop way down for a week or so, then it slowly comes back up. Usually I am paranoid to try this, but once in a while I get brave.
  • That is just what happens.

Google is unpredictable and this kind of thing happens all the time. Just build more good quality links to the page and also some fresh content won't hurt.

  • I have a total love/hate thing for Google. I mean, on one hand I love 'em because they send me a fat check every month (Adsense). But the SEO end of it is so damn tiresome. If it wasn't for outsourcing I'd probably just bite the bullet and rely on nothing but paid traffic and non-Google sources like article and video marketing. I guess if you scale that up, it's one way to end the nightmare of random and unpredictable Google algorithm tweaks. I think it's about time to shell out some bigger bucks and hire a team of writers and video makers.
  • Thanks all... just wanted to make sure I wasn't going crazy (any further at least).

Weird thing is, the other pages of the site still hold their rank for their specific terms and have for months. I know the site isn't banned because of this, it's just that one page.

Oh, BTW, the page in question has the most (all relevant) backlinks - no spam farms, no zillion links overnight, etc.

Other input welcome, but thanks again to all for their input so far.
  • Update for those still following, another thread: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...e-chaning.html

Got me to check my results again this afternoon (still nowhere to be found this morning) and the missing site is #7.

    • Hi Gary,

Have you checked to see if there may be other pages with very similar content? If a scraper site copied your content and has slightly higher PR then your page could be getting filtered as duplicate content.

In those type of situations it is usually the page with the highest PR that doesn't get filtered. That would explain why it occasionally appears while datacenters are going through a refresh.
