Here is my problem I am wondering if anyone has had any luck getting on the first page of google with a .us or a .biz? I know everyone says to stay with just the .com .net and .org names. If this is the case should I just get a domain like mydomainstore.com or mydomainsite.com if the mydomian.com is taken. I did this with one of my domains for stayathomejobssite.com and it didn't rank for the key word stay at home jobs. So just wanted to get peoples ideas before I buy more domains thank you in advance for the help fellow warriors.

Some people say the top/big 3 TLDs (.com, .net and .org) are preferred by Google over lesser used TLDs like .us, .info, .biz, etc.

Personally I don't think it makes a difference as far as ranking goes, and from my limited personal experience at using "lesser" extensions (namely .me, etc), I don't think it matters one bit.

I can understand why people may perceive them to have less strength, though, and that is because the fact people question their usage instills fear and uncertainty in the minds of those who may use them, and ultimately dissuades them from putting significant effort into ranking a website using such a domain. Hence, you don't see many sites ranking with those domains simply because most "serious webmasters" choose not to use them.

But you can, if you want.

Having said that, "the big three" are still generally more desirable and therefor command a higher price than their lesser known and lesser used alternatives if and when the time comes that you may try to sell your virtual real estate at a later time.

So the choice is yours. Use one of the big three and add a prefix or a suffix, or else get your exact keyword in the domain and use a different extension.

    Your call :-)

Ive had a domain rank in position 10 for a .biz before but I kind of moved onto other things...hmmmm maybe I'll work on that again and see where it takes us...lol, but to answer yoru question, yes, you can rank high with those. Oh I almost forgot, I also have a .info which ranks pretty high, especially in Google Images.

I had a .biz I did very little work on go to number 3 on Google where it has stayed. Google says it does not matter. If it does, the difference is tiny. I would go for it if that is the best way to get the keywords you want.

The problem is with the image those TLDs have in the minds of some. Would worry about that more than the search engines. As the internet grows, I think people are going to care less over time.

Domain that have an extension name of that .biz can also rank 1st in SERP. I have already work for a .biz site and I had made it rank 4 in its prospective keyword. If you only done the proper SEO for you can do much better.

I don't really think that it matters that much. But I think psychologically you are better off sticking with the com / net / org type domain extensions.

unless it is really fitting biz / us just don't feel right to me.

I prefer .com to any other extension. Most people automatically type in the name .com.

I have only purchased a .net once and my coach/mentor told me that the .com is a much more commercially viable option.

Search engines don't discriminate, they rank all the time, same with .info the reason you don't see many, is because there aren't many!

User discrimination is a different story.

Makes no difference for rankings but tests have proved that .com or .org/.net domains get more clicks because of the trust factor. Also, if you ever want to sell your site you will likely get better offers for a .com.

In ranking, it does not matter. In branding, it means alot. Thankfully I don't care about branding .

A dot us would certainly rank #1 for united states domains. (No quotes)

I've got a .us on the first page of Google. The term isn't very competitive though, and I've only got 1 .us site, but it doesn't seem any more difficult than a .com to rank.

It might seem obvious to state that it's very US-centric; it ranks nowhere in google.co.uk which is the only other one I check, so maybe not as valuable as .com but control sample way too small for conclusive results.

The old rules of what domain ranks above another is becoming less and less the norm nowadays. We've had quite a few .biz domains hit No 1 in Google.

There are so many different ranking factors nowadays. It's the best optimsised page with the best back links profile regardless of the domain suffix that gets the No 1 slot nowadays.

I have a .biz (and an info) which is *position* #1 in Google.

Furthermore, i dont think that the visitors care...if they are looking for a keyword on Google..and the #1 site is a *.biz....do you think they avoid clicking that site?

    I've ranked .info before.

A ranking today simply means great content, which usually means original and relevant to the keyword and backlinks with the right anchor text.

I personally have stuck with .com's for a majority of my sites. If I can't get an exact match I'll simply add a prefix or a suffix.
