backlinking: home page vs inner pages?

Does the individual page have to have PR?

Or does the PR of the lift all the pages (to some extent)?

Will building the PR of the main page also contribute to the rankings of the inner pages, even if they have no PR of their own?

Or should I be making inner pages optimized to specific keywords and then pimping each of them separately?

  • Keep in mind that google does not always display the actual pagerank of inner pages. PageRank definitely spreads from wherever links are pointing. If you get some good pagerank for your homepage, if possible build up sections of your site so that people will want to link to the main page for each section too. That can help give authority as a site, not just pagerank.
  • Yes. Figure out which pages actually make the money, and spend your time ranking those pages.

    • How many links do you have on your homepage? The PR of the homepage is spread to all the pages that are linked to.

      If you want to rank well for a particular keyword, optimize one page for that keyword and get backlinks directly to that page.

      It's much better to have 100 links to that page, than have 100 links to the homepage, and then 1 link from the homepage to that page (especially if you have several other links on the homepage).
  • If your site is structured properly (adequate internal linking) then every link you get to the site will also help your other pages. PageRank flows from both internal and external links.

    Still try and send your link to the most appropriate page at all times but remember that each link helps the entire site.
  • To make it look natural you should build links to a number of pages on your website. Remember the audience too - if you link them to your site from somewhere else then you should take them to the page they need to get to not the homepage.

  • Depending on the internal linking structure of your site, domain PR can definitely spread through your interior pages. On my WP blogs that are PR3 and PR4 most of my interior pages of some page rank (some the same as the main domain), even with zero direct backlinks outside of my site.

    But, the PR has little to no effect on your rankings. If you want want to rank an inner page in Google, then backlink that inner page. I would optimize each inner page for 1 particular keyword and backlink the hell out of it.

      KW optimize that page, then backlink to it using the anchor text for the kw you want.

      Your main page will still feel the love of the backlinks going to that page, after all, it's part of the home page

      I tend to make my backlink structure something like: 90% internal pages, 10% home page, depending on how I want to make my site.

      After you've built up a strong portfolio of backlinks juicing up your site and your articles, you can write a page for a keyword and toss a few links to it and boom! you're in the top five for it.
