Can certain word usage, ruin your SEO optimization efforts?

Hi everyone.
I'll state my question with an example:

Let's say I have a blog that talks about "HP laptops" and "HP laptops" is my actual keyword phrase I want to target.
Now on my blog, one of my articles would certainly be about HP and Dell laptops and their differences. I'd also have an article about the components inside an HP laptop.
Meanwhile, I'll include my targeted keyword ("HP laptops") in the titles, first sentence of paragraphs, etc.

The question is: although I have used my targeted keyword phrase in my blog consistent with SEO standards, would the inclusion of other "opposing" keywords or even "low search volume" keywords ruin my SEO efforts?

I hope I was clear. Thank you in advance for your responses.
