Question about blog backlinking

I have been commenting on various highly relevant textile blogs and I have a question. Though many do not allow for link insertion in the comment area, they do ask for your handle, website, and email. In the handle, I put some tasteful anchoring text...like "woven label guru".

Now, when you click this (the handle)...it goes to my site. Does this count as a quality backlink? I have not seen this addressed in this forum.

  • Comments are generally not considered quality backlinks. However, they can be useful, especially if they are dofollow links (ie. not nofollow).

    • Thanks much...however, if you use in your handle (which others can click and go to your site) key words...but the body of the comment doesn't have a "<a href=http...."....is this still considered a backlink as defined by the SE?

    • LOL...I do add content, I do not spam (!) (tongue-n-cheek) Seriously, I am trying to build up links by adding quality comments and critiques on blogs that no one would give the time of day to, like T-shirt reviews, or baby clothes. I spend time with each comment, writing short paragraphs. I am somewhat new at this, and I don't want to be a crap head spammer. Is this legit way get read by the search engines, to have anchor text in the "name handel"?

      I don't need 1000s of back links...I just need a couple hundred good quality ones because my manufactering niche is very small.

      By the way, I will say it again...this board is a goldmine.
  • As far as I am aware, they are counted as back links. If you are commenting on bloggs/forums with a high PR, then you will get some credit for that with regards to back linking.

    Its a toss up of writing articles that take a while to do with only one backlink or many comments.

    I would rather comment on bloggs until I have a few hundred links before writing articles.

    Just keep it up and the links will count =)
  • Yes that would help you to increase your rankings.. If you see other commenters have also commented the same way ie using keyword in NAME then you can also do the same.. But post a meaningful comment and not just say thanks for your post etc.. etc..
  • IMHO, blog commenting is probably not that effective for backlinks. Spammers have ruined it and Google probably doesn't give your link much weight. Here's a video you might want to watch:

    Now having said, that, I think blog commenting might be good to get you traffic - but, of course you need to post a really great comment that makes people want to click your link to find out more about you.

    • In other words, they try to scare webmasters into thinking they don't and to not give out "dofollow" links willy-nilly but the truth is that, unless a page has had the crappolla spammed out of it, they count comment links not flagged with a rel=nofollow flag. As long as there aren't a lot of outgoing links on a page these links are quite effective.
