Noob quesiton on forum posting for backlinks

Most forums have an off-topic section where people talk about whatever. If I post in this section, do the backlinks carry equal weight as if I posted in the main sections?

For those who post useful content, how much time do you spend studying up on the niche, assuming you have zero knowledge to start with? It seems like it would take a long amount of studying to get to the point where I could have good knowledge on dog training or something (I have no experience with this obviously).

Thanks!

A backlink is a backlink wherever it appears in a forum. I'm slightly confused by your question though about being an expert. You need to have some knowledge of the niche to be able to market a product so you need to be researching the market for more than just posting in forums to get backlinks.

Forums are actually a great place to learn about a niche - just hang out and lurk and see what people are talking about. What language do they use? What problems do they have? It won't take long to learn enough to be able to answer questions and provide useful content. And you never know you might discover a gap in the market you can fill with a product!

From experience, forum posting is almost completely worthless these days in terms of link juice being passed, but it can be useful to build links directly from other users if your content is linkworthy.

It certainly does no direct harm, but it isn't a valuable long-term link building strategy.
