I've learned a good bit about keyword SEO from several members here (thank you very much!) but I'm confused about one thing and hoping someone can shed some light.

If I insert a keyword phrase into Google without quotation marks, my site comes up as #1 in the results. If I place the quotation marks I am not even in the top 20. Those who are in the top 20 are mostly sites that have tried to optimize their page for that specific keyword phrase and offer a page of info but they are not a niche site for the topic like mine is. And most of them do not come up in the top 20 of a standard Google search for the same phrase.

At the same time I do not have that specific phrase in my meta data nor have I placed it in any of my text on my site. The content of my site seems to be serving me the top result for that specific phrase.

So, my question is: if I come up in Google as the top site for the phrase alone is it at all a concern that I do not come up in the top sites when I do the quotes search?

I have a quick question for you? Are you signed into ANY Google service (Blogger, Gmail, Analystics, etc) when you are checking? This WILL effect what you see when you do your searches.

Kate, even when signed out I get my site as the top site for the specific keyword phrase.

So Shaun, if I sign out of Google services and still find the same do I still need to get someone else to verify it for me as you suggest?

Kelly, I'm not sure if I'm missing your point or you are missing mine. I'm trying to understand why my site is ranking #1 for the keyword search when I have not done what you list for the specific keyword phrase for which I find my site ranking as #1. I do have keywords placed and in the ways you list but not the specific longtail keyword phrase I've looked at.

Thanks for the input and help!

Nope, it's just a suggestion from me to 100% verify your findings. In other words, it's optional to get someone else to do it.

If you're already signed out and the same results still come up, then it's highly likely that the results are the real results.

However, if you aren't satisfied and wants more concrete proof BUT you don't want anybody else to discover your keyword, then just use a proxy server. Anonymouse for UK servers and WorldProxy202 US for US servers.

Yes, Google tends to change the results by tailoring to your usual surfing habits and any personal information like your hobby, age, gender, etc. (yes Google knows).

But if you're not signed in to any services and the same results appear, try getting a friend to validate your findings. You can also try searching for your keyword through a proxy server, i.e. Anonymouse.org, etc.

And if the same results appear, then good for you. The common user doesn't search with quotes.

    Greetings!

I think the answer above is making things more complicated than they need to be. Plus, keyword density and the title attribute (in a link or image) is useless.

    Keywords should be used:

    1) in the Page Title
    2) in the anchor text of internal links
    3) in the filename/URL
    4) in the heading tags (H1, H2, etc.)
    5) in the page copy
    6) in the meta description tag
    7) in image alt text

I checked though WorldProxy202 and I still come up top of the list for the specific long tail keyword.

So, please help me understand this. I do not have this long tail keyword phrase in my pages in any of the things Kelly listed above. But I do have the first three words of the four word long tail keyword phrase. Does that mean by optimizing my pages for two or three main keywords and gaining a good Google results rank it is likely that I will gain an equally good Google results rank for a other long tail keyword phrases that extends from my basic keywords?
