Difference of quote searches and broad searches

I was wondering what the difference between searching for keywords in quotations on google and not using quotations was? I thought that inside quotations the keyword string had to show up exactly in that order to turn up in a search, but to my surprise sometimes when I search with quotations as opposed to non-quotations, I get more results. For example, if you type in "haier hdn455 45 pint capacity mechanical control dehumidifier" you get 4,860 results, but if you do the same thing without quotations you get 1,790 results. This doesn't make sense to me if what I said above about quotations vs non-quotation searches is true. Anyone know why this might happen?
