Hey Everyone,

I have a question and I would greatly appreciate any info you guys (and ladies) can offer.

I have been learning about IM for about 3-4 months now and have a niche marketing blog project started but I'm still fuzzy about the process of building backlinks.

Can anyone outline the basic steps (click this, click that) of building backlinks and linking to other sites.

Thanks in advance for all of your input.

Best wishes

Burk

Get yourself one of the monthly backlink packets on offer, and follow the instructions to create backlinks to your site. I use Joe Finn's as his packets are limited to 400 people, so the sites don't get blasted like they do with some other packets.

There's also a guy offering to build bookmarks for your site in the warriors for hire forum. He gives 50 bookmarks for $9, which is pretty good, although I found that only 22 were dofollow links. 13 were nofollow and the rest either didn't work at all (no link or duff site), or were javascript redirects that search engines would ignore. Still not bad value, but not quite as good as it looks. Probably worth taking two sets of 50 links (100 links in one go may look suspicious), as you'll get enough to give your site a boost.

All you need to do then is make sure these backlinks get seen. I have a tool that can do this for you - see the link below. There is an opt-in for a series of power tips for people building backlinks which you may find helpful.

You can outsource backlink building, but it can be costly if you are just starting. You also have the problem of someone else not taking as much care as you would, but that's always a danger with outsourcing.

    Hope this helps,
    Alan

If you run a blog do blog roll exchanges with other blogs in your niche, comment on them.

Write some articles, post them in top 3 article directories.

Bookmark your interesting pages in reddit, delicio. Maybe try adding your blog to technorati.

Participating in forums can give you some backlinks as signature or profile link.

There are so many ways to build back links.

I have a quick question I would like to ack about backlinking. I apologize to the OP if I am hijacking their thread. I don't have enough posts to create a topic.

Is it possible to get a website (ex: john doe (dot) com) that does not have the keyword in the domain name that you are trying to rank for in the top ten?

For instance I want to get john doe (dot) com to rank for tyler tx real estate but I don't have tyler texas real estate in my domin name or really anywhere on my web page.

Can i get a top ten raking for this through just good backlinks ??

Like posting a hyperlink that says tyler texas real estate with a link to john doe (dot) com.

    Thanks! This place is awesome!

The answer to your question is an absolutely YES.

If your on-page SEO, your content & your off-page SEO is all white hat as well as strong enough to prove your site as an authority website; definitely YES you can rank well for such terms.

Having keywords in your domain name helps you as an advantage so does having keywords in your h1 tags, meta-tags, meta-description make a difference. However having keywords in your domain name does not necessarily mean that you would rank well. You've to work under the framework of the SE's and learn LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing) rules.

If you're building links gradually from different sources on the web such that it looks all natural to google and NOT some spamming technique, it's all good.

The day google finds out that you're spamming the SE's, they will de-index you.

      Be careful.

Also, DON'T build links too fast. Build them gradually.

Totally depends on the competition, so is different for every keyword.

Having keywords in the domain name is only one of many factors that is considered when ranking a site. Yes, you can almost always get ranked without, but it's easier with.

If you can't get the domain you want, try variations. For example, when I just checked now, the following domains were available...

      thetylertxrealestate.com
      thetylertxrealestate.org
      thetylertxrealestate.net
      thetylertexasrealestate.com
      thetylertexasrealestate.org
      thetylertexasrealestate.net

...and that's only with adding "the" at the start of the domain name. There are plenty of other short "stop" words (ie ones that will be ignored) that will allow you to find a domain name that contains your keywords.

      Hope this helps,

      Chamber,

Yes it is very possible to get a site ranked without having a keyword relevant domain. Obviously, having the keywords in the domain does help and adds some weight to your SEO efforts but it certainly isn't the whole story.

If you add good, relevant backlinks to your site over time and add relevant content to the site as well consistently you stand a very good chance of ranking well.

I would check also how backlinks some of you competition has in the keywords you want to go after. If you are going after general terms like 'real estate' then that will take some doing and require a lot of backlink building but more geographical terms like 'texas real estate' will still be a lot of effort but somewhat easier.

It really comes down to your budget. If you are going to do it yourself, there are many ways to build backlinks. Articles, forums, social bookmarking, you can even sit down and email webmasters in your niche asking for links.

If you have a budget, however, even if it is small, there are a number of services out there, or you can outsource the jobs.

    Hi Burk

The first question to ask is how many backlinks do you need to rank on the first page of Google?

Until you know the answer to this question don't even bother starting!

I may get flamed for this but it is one of my pet peeves, people suggest all kinds of different ways to get backlinks and sell packages to get you thousands of links to your domain but for the keyword you are targeting it may be the case that you don't need very many at all.

If you have Market Samurai do some competitive analysis (there is a complete explanation of how to use the free version in my 'Master Traffic Plan' in my sig), if you don't, type your keyword into Google and then take the top ten urls (results) and run them through Yahoo's site explorer and find out how many backlinks your competition have.

Once you know what it is that you need to do to rank high then you hold all the cards and your marketing efforts become far more effective (and cheaper).

    Kind regards

    John

  • ***DO KEYWORD RESEARCH BEFORE BUILDING LINKS***

    1. Social Bookmarking - Sign up for Digg, Mixx, Propeller, Reddit, Delicious, StumbleUpon, MrWong, Spotback, and Folkd. Once you've signed up on these sites, bookmark the page on your site that you think will lead to the most conversions. Make sure you use your keyword in your title. IE: "Texas Real Estate Mogul John Doe" where your keyword is "Texas Real Estate".

    2. Blog Commenting: Go to Google, and use the following search string in the search box.

site:.edu inurl:blog "post a comment" -"you must be logged in" "your keyword"

for the site:.edu you can replace the .edu with .gov .com .net however you want to roll.. just remember .edu's and .gov's are more valuable. just don't go spamming the FTC.

for "your keyword": plug in your keyword, ie "Texas Real Estate"

Now just go to the blogs you find, or outsource after you find a list of decent blogs in your niche and put in a bunch of relevant comments. if you spam, your comment will be tossed out, in fact most times your comment will be tossed anyways unless it's completely relevant, or just on auto accept. it's a piss off, but this system works. trust me.

    3. Buy a Backlink Packet: I suggest Terry Kyle's as his is not over-saturated like say Angela's backlinks. He specifically only lets a few people onto each list, preserving the sites integrity, and the power of the backlinks. smart dude. smart service. good backlinks.

Take note of forums from this list that might be in your niche, or that contain your interests... If it's cool, stick around and contribute to the forum. Grow your authority while performing market research...

Instructions come with these packets, so don't be afraid. Yes, Terry's is more expensive, but it works - a decent trade imo.

    4. Forum Signatures -
In the forums that you actually stick around in (warrior forum included) make sure that you add a signature to your posts. Don't do it right off the bat, in fact most sites won't even allow a signature until you've posted a certain number of times.. But say, once you've hit 25 posts, add a signature with a anchor text of your keyword "Texas Real Estate" or whatever, and point it to your page that you're trying to rank.

That's more than enough to help you rank #1, and more than enough to get you started. There are other ways, but they're crap. Take that from someone who's been in this game for a while now - and who makes his living through SEO.

Once you have a handle on these, and do more reading on SEO, backlinks, and the like - you can always sign up for a program subscription like EVO II.

Here are some backlinking TIPS to keep in mind.
It's all about links, links, and more links!
Be sure to include the keyword in the anchor text [or clickable text] of your links.
Stick to one link-building method and strive to do at least 50 to 100 links per month using ONLY that method.

Blog commenting is quick and not difficult at all. Just ensure the posts where you're commenting have been indexed. There are lots of places that you can get fast backlinks. If you decide to use profile links (this is what the Angela packs are) then you'll need to ensure that the profile is visible without being logged in and that you ping them/bookmark them to get the profile indexed.
