HOW TO BUILD A LARGE SEO FRIENDLY WEBSITE

I'm interested in putting a lot of time and effort into a new website. I've built plently of small sites, and promoted them, but I think what I'm the best at is building content, rather than promoting it.

I use wordpress.

What is the best way to optimize a site for many keyword phrases?

Should I have a bunch of posts, or a ton of pages?

I'd rather create pages because I feel that they're more dedicated to a particular keyword phrase rather than posting into categories.

I want to create a website that generates almost purely natural, organic traffic.

Any advice?

PLEASE NO OFF PAGE--BACKLINKING ADVICE....well aware that backlinks improve rankings

In my opinion have seperate pages. Make sure the pages for toughly competed keywords have a text link from index page (sitewide if possible) with the correct anchor text.

Make sure every page has a unique keyword targetted title.

always make sure your URLs contain the keyword.

    http:// yoursite.com/review-of-product.html etc.

    Use permalink /%postname%/

    (or /%category%/%postname%/)

Will I ever hurt the relevancy of other pages on my site if I create new pages not necessarily "relevant" to googles keyword tool?

That's what scares me about building large sites.

How do you know what's "relevant" - if an article/ subject is on topic you will automatically use LSI and related keywords in it...and google will honor this.

Dont overthink those "related keywords". Write ANY meaningful article and it WILL usually be ok. Its not that you write an article about, say, gardening, and then the article will contain mostly keywords about Star Wars?

Have categories on your sites, tags, use a good theme..and try having articles in a meaningful category also.

I would just make sure you build good content for your readers and assuming you have a site map/catagories in place I would then make sure individual posts contained relevant internal linking to your other posts.

If you keep on adding content you should naturally start ranking for stuff you never even thought about.

Lol. Yeap that's all there is to it...not. I use all the right plugins, and permalink settings.

What determines whether your pages are "on topic enough" for the search engines? If I want a 50 page site how do I figure out what keyword phrases to target especially since the keyword tools only give you so many.

I understand high volume, low competition so please don't say that's what to look for.

When you use the keyword tool, if it only gives you a few relevant keywords then take one of those and put that back into the keyword tool and it will give you more. Some will be the same but some will be new. You can keep doing that until you get enough.
As for being on topic, make sure you use your keywords several times in each particular post or page and it will be very "on topic enough"

Just a quick comment, 50 page site is not considered a large site actually. When you want to build a large, SEO optimized and highly themed site, you do not limit the number of pages you should be creating. Content should be constantly flowing. When you stop building content, even if you have the most optimized site (onpage and offpage optimization), it will eventually loose its ranking. There is no chance for stale sites to rank in SE's.

I read a post here in this forum which pointed out static pages in wordpress are not as easily searchable.

By that, I mean your pages do not get automatically pinged when you make a post and that pages are not added to rss feeds for aggregators to pick up.

There is nothing wrong with using pages but just keep in mind you might have to manually ping your pages and create your own feeds.

If someone can clarify this ??

Cool. So as long as I "start" with the root keyword, I won't have a problem with relevancy for my pages?

    example. website is.... howtoplaygolf.com

With a page being improve my golf swing
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[2001417].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author Adam Roy
So if for example my website is howtoplaygolf.com

I put in how to play golf into the keyword tool. I keep putting a term from my results into the keyword tool again for more.

Eventually I come to "improve my golf swing" So as long as I "start" with my root keyword I should be all set?

Do your keyword research but try to provide value to your readers. On large sites you can get a good level of return traffic if you make your site "sticky". Have keyword targetted pages, but if you think your readership would be interested in something, add it regardless.

I made mistake of putting up poor quality outsourced articles at first just for keywords. They got good traffic as I ranked for good keywords but there conversion was non existent.

Try to make sure everything you add has a benefit to the reader in some way, and not just writing for the sake of writing.

Backlinking brings traffic in such a way that it directs it. People who are interested in the content will click the link.

Also, since backlinks are considered by Google as a major factor in ranking their websites, backlinks can also bring organic traffic.

If you do it smartly. Relevant backlinks, with keywords in anchor text, surrounded by a descriptive paragraph, on a relevant site, with decent visitors = traffic.

Nobody should ever ask about backlinks...ever....common sense......

Well friend, I am sorry to burst your bubble but you cannot get real organic traffic if you do not do offpage linking.

With that aside, here are the answers to your questions.

What is the best way to optimize a site for many keyword phrases?
Check the overall keyword density at live-keyword-analysis.com. Fast and easy.

Should I have a bunch of posts, or a ton of pages?
The amount of pages does not matter. What matters is how promoted the page is.

So if you do not want advice on promotion, I am sorry to say but we cannot solve your problem.

    Remember, there are NO SHORTCUTS.

    But I wish you luck.

You are on the right track! My advice is this..

      1. Study and analyze your niche, everything about them, what makes them tick, what are their hot buttons, what products they discuss, what topics they discuss, EVERYTHING!
      2. Use that research to build your wordpress site using a silo structure and posts targeted exactly at those people.
      3. The biggest thing you can do for your success is make your content as rich in information as possible. It has to be compelling, interesting and potential link bait.
      4. Get all your on page SEO factors right.
      5. Get all your off page SEO factors right.
      6. Get all this right and your site will grow into a great site loved by both the people and Google alike.

It is not as difficult as you might think. GO FOR IT!

Ok for everybody talking about backlinking. I said please, no advice on backlinking. Why did I say that? Because obviously I work on my off page optimization, I know the effects of backlinks therefore I don't need a bunch of people telling me backlinks are great...no crap! I don't have a site without a bunch of backlinks.

What I'm concerned about is the search engine friendly content I want to fill my site with.

What's the best way to structure a large site? I know I know I know that backlinks help. I build backlinks all the time.

I have had very good luck with Wordpress blogs with a Keyword Title, Keyword related tag line, simple layout (absolutely no flash) and specific keyword related categories. Use /%category%/%postname%/ permalink structure.

Posts tend to get automatically pinged and indexed quickly. Article titles will be indexed and the title keywords should appear towards the beginning and end of the post.

I only use pages for the Contact Us (contact 7 plugin), Disclaimer, etc. Posts are the meat search engines look for. Try to end articles in a way that gets comments, as in a question. search engines place high relevance on comments.

I never use All-in-One SEO tool. It hides the tag line (page description seen above your browser. Search engines place as much relevance in the tagline or description of the website or image or video, as it does the title.

I have ranked top 10 for more than 100 keyword phrases, with more than a million search queries in the last 60 days on just 5 of my blogs. Most of my content was provided to me by my contributers for free.

In the last 60 days, I have one blog with Google Page Rank of 3 with only 19 posts.
2 of them have page rank of 1 with about 150 posts between them, mostly contributed.

Use bookmarking social media sites to help with backlink power. Get Onlywire Plugin. It rocks.

Also, try to get a twitter account with a similar keyword as your website name, link it to your site and retweet your posts often. It helps drive traffic and Google will often list your Twitter account under your post, lending extra credibility. Very Powerful.

      Hope you found this useful.

My largest site is around 300ish posts. I know that isn't a mega site but it's larger than the average IM site.

    I'm using wordpress.

Almost all content is posts and with the default wordpress category and tag system it makes site navigation and crawling very user and bot friendly.

I have no problems with bots crawling the site, finding new content and page rank working it's way through all of my posts.

I occasionally use pages, typically for oddball stuff like about / contact etc...

I don't think your going to see any SEO difference or advantage by using pages over posts. Pages don't offer anything special over posts when it comes to SEO.

The most important element, in my opinion, when it comes to large sites and wordpress is the navigation. Well thought out categories and tags to benefit users and bots alike.

I think I read somewhere that nothing should be more than three clicks from the homepage.... Index --> Health Tips (category) --> 10 Ways To Lose Weight (post)

Every post you make should be in a category that is listed on the index page. I often see sites that have very poorly thought out navigation and category systems so it's easy for content to be lost and never seen again.

Sticking to the three click rule, users and SE bots can quickly get to all of your sites content.

I only use custom made wordpress themes so none of my sites look anything like a blog but underneath the hood it's all wordpress and I have no complaints.

Not sure if this is what you were asking for, hope it helps some.

If your not technical I suggest you use an existing theme that has a lot of customizable options.

For me I usually just browse for one i like look of them swap out the header image to a custom grahic, then alter layout slightly in the control panel.

And I would create another subcategory so it goes:

For on-page SEO, place keywords or phrases NATURALLY within the copy of your website, Do not KEYWORD stuff. Meaning, don't just cram your keywords within the text and it not make sense. Make sure it has a natural flow. A good rule of thumb: try to naturally place your keywords or phrases within every 100 words of your copy.

I have built several large sites and getting them fully indexed can be tricky at first.

You need to make sure all the title and tags are unique, each page has content and that the site has at least a PR4.

A good tip is to link to your most important (valuable) pages from your home page, and I don't mean from the menu. They need to be on the home page itself.

When you start building links make sure you deep link into your sub categories to get those indexed better too.

    Good luck with it.

Have a keyword theme then build it up by chucking out content.....For blogs, the advantage is that it's always fresh in Google's eyes, so start chucking out content and track your analystics for what long tail keywords users use to search for your blog and fine-tune from there.

For example, I have a blog that has 220 posts (pages of content) and I am chucking out content at the rate of 1 a day. So by this year end, I would have 500 - 600 pages of content on SE. All I need to do is make sure they as targeted as possible to rank well via long tail keywords...That would ensure me of getting 300 - 400 visits a day. (currently 200 a day).....

I do little link building at the moment, but will be doing more in the later half of the year...

  • First Off...

I'm super lazy, and pretty busy - so excuse me if this is posted above. I simply haven't read everything. No time.

    That Said...

When building your site using wordpress for SEO purposes, do the following:

Start with a general non-related term, ie: your name for example: ShaneHunter.org

Once you have that down, you have a blank piece of paper, or neutral territory to start with.

I know what you're thinking... "But I need to have my main keyword in my domain!" nope. you don't. it helps for short term seo boosts, but really doesn't matter long term. Think about it... is "Ebay" or "Amazon" relevant to what they sell/do without knowing what their brand is? Nope. Totally neutral, unrelated terms.

Once you have your domain, with a dedicated IP (it's cheap, and worth it if you truly want to get big)

It's time to draw out your map. I suggest bubbl.us

Your Main Site should have a new page, using a broad keyword/keyword phrase (but one that you can still compete in)

From that main page, you should create sub pages using terms related to that broad keyword/phrase in long tail format for your subject/content/keyword choice.

From here, you can go even more specific / more longtail if you need to, depends on the degrees of separation from the broad term to the longtail.

Do that for each main topic you wish to cover.

Make sure your broad keyword pages links to each of it's longtail subpages, and of course to the root domain.

Make sure each of your longtail pages links back to your broad page.

Do this all, by researching your keyterms first, and structure that way. it's all about inner link architecture. Get that right, and you'll strike gold.

Title Tag and meta tag should be unique for every page.
If the websites has some related group of web pages. For that we need to separate folder for categories. And create Search Engine Friendly URL.
Frame title tag related to the web page.
And create Html site map, XML sitemap, RSS Feed for your web page
If u design ur websites in word press add Permalink.
    Re direct your websites permanently.

A very important component of good SEO is site performance. People forget about this. Google states that they want to provide their users with the best, relevant content and they want to deliver it quickly. They even have a tool you can use to check your site's speed and performance. So I always recommend that you get a Google Webmaster account and check out all the info in there.

I'm hearing alot about sub pages. How do I intertwine sub pages into wordpress without using posts?

    Another thing...
In wordpress, there is an option where you may choose the landing page for your website, where visitors end up in your site by simply typing yourdomain.com. It can be your latest posts, a specific post, or a specific page..

I would prefer that maybe the landing page would be an about us page, or a specific category of posts. But would this be bad for SEO to have your landing page be something other than the default being all of your recent posts?

Not at all, many people use a default page for their index.

Daniel Molano - Internet Business Consulting - Work From Home would be a good example and he's a fairly smart cat who knows what he is doing. Do a search and read some of his posts here.

You'll also notice his site structure and navigation are very similar to what I suggested in my previous post in this thread. His top navigation goes to specific pages and his side navigation leads to all of his posts. It's a very user and bot friendly site and apparently google loves it.

Study his site since it's in line with what you are trying to do.

What about changing your default landing page to something other than the most recent posts...such as a squeeze page with an opt in. Does this hurt SEO?

    Not at all.

    Look at his site.

He has a PAGE as the default index page. It's essentially a squeeze or sales page. His SE rankings are off the chart. His homepage is static and never changes even though he does add new posts to his site.

Not having your most recent posts as your homepage (the default wordpress setup) isn't going to hurt your SEO efforts at all. In fact, it could make it easier since the content on your index page isn't going to change with every new post so you can really optimize that page for whatever keywords you're trying to rank for.

Having a default static homepage is very common for businesses to have. People just don't associate wordpress with this type of site set-up even though it's very common when you step away from the blogging world. Also, most people have no clue how to harness the true power of wordpress and tweak it to do really neat stuff.

His page is a goldmine for aspiring wordpress webmasters. He is not doing anything that can't be done out of the box but he is taking advantage of what wordpress has to offer and has set up a very effective site. It has all of the benefits of a sales page and a blog all rolled up into one package.

Is it best to create one page at a time, creating some backlinks to it, and getting it ranked before moving on to the next?

What is the best way to optimize a site for many keyword phrases?
there is no best way to optimize site for many keywords, the best way is to optimize site for one single keyword/phrase, it's much better if your site is highly relevant to one keyword than to many search terms.

at the same time, if you want to get high rankings for different but related keywords, then you should optimize other pages of your website for these keywords and you'll get the best possible results.

so here we come to your second question and my answer to you is to rather create pages than posts.

    good luck,
    Damjan

What if I had a website about killer whales...and then optimized a page on and off page to rank for the unrelated term "the habits of pickeral"
