A is worthless. B is time consuming so I would go with C

I am presuming that its not what THEY should rank for but you are talking about but how YOU determine what they are going after.

So my answer is C and jsut drop in their URL and have Google analyze it.

    Market Samurai maybe after that.

      Thank you guys,

"I am presuming that its not what THEY should rank for but you are talking about but how YOU determine what they are going after. "

This is correct I have been given this question as an interview question:

What keywords SHOULD they be going after.

As I have VERY limited knowledge of dealing with large commercial sites I am finding it very difficult to determine which keywords (out of the plethora of items they offer) are best to go after?!

It's a lame question. It's like asking how do you figure out which
    keywords amazon.com is going for.

    It's a useless question.

I would imagine woolworths dot whatever, would be going for
online shopping. But "making an educated guess" isn't a choice.

It does reiterate that meta keywords is useless. However, in the
context of the question, and the choice of the answers, it is the
only choice that makes sense. Google will tell you what you should
rank for, not what you are trying to rank for. What a website is
trying to rank for is in the mind of the webmaster. And the only window
into that mind is the title and keywords meta.

Be sure and read the sig rules. (hint)

yeah it has been tough trying to figure it out and the comparison to Amazon has come up in this battle!

But I think through a combination is the way forward as each can offer insight into the question. Ultimately starting from scratch and determining the keywords is simple but trying to figure out what a massive retail site is going for is a challenge...

      Thanks for your input.

    D. Hack into their Google webmaster account and see what the site is currently ranking for.

    OK... that was a contradiction.

    is it

    a) what keywords are they ranking for / trying to rank for

    or

    b) what keywords should they want to be ranking for

Big difference. Mike gave you an the answer for 'a' and you replied that you are looking for 'b'

A large commercial site like that shouldn't necessarily be trying to rank for anything specific on the index page.

The category pages should be trying to rank for their specific content ie... electronics, baby toys etc... and it gets more specific the deeper you get into the site and sub-categories.

As for what the index page should be trying to rank for, I have no idea. Never done the research for something like that. 'online shopping', 'discount online shopping' or something big and generic like that.

Most major retailers don't really bother with that stuff very much because they are already name brands. When I wanna buy cheap crap online I don't search google for 'cheap crap', I type in walmart.com

oh yeah... if I were taking a multiple choice test and those were my options, I'd pick C. Use Google keyword tools?

At first glance, that makes sense. But google keyword tools shows you
what your site looks like it should target. But what it does and what you
want are 2 different things. You can't run it through and tell someone
what to try and rank for when they are actually a whole other animal.

I know that frustration. I ran a site through and don't want to rank for
those keywords. So, I'm tweaking in the opposite direction. And if anyone
told me to go with what google suggests, I'd say it's your job to
      get me what I want.

The problem with the question is that a site like that would not be
targeting anything, like jasonmorgan said. It should be an authority
      site like amazon, buy, etc/
