Keyword Research Question

I have recently been finding a lot of keywords with high CPC but low search volume.

for instance,

I have a page of a nich that is $10-$13 CPC but only around 800 - 1000 exact searches a month.

I find myself wanting to take risks because the CPC is so high. Do you guys think this is a bad risk? If so, I'm curious to hear why? Just not enough volume.

this is for adsense sites and possible affiliate sales. Although I'm not sure how I could sell affiliate items through these sites yet.

Thanks you guys are great!!!

  • It depends on your offer, but I'm not really sure what your question is.

If you are planning on building adsense sites around these keywords, that can definitely prove to be very profitable if you can capitalize on these searches.

Any questions just let me know

    • Thanks Nick, let me clarify.

Do you guys go for keywords with a really high cpc (for example $10) if the exact number of keywords searches is low (for example 1000 exact per month)

Or is it not worth is because traffic is so low? only 1000 exact searches a month?
  • I have found that anything under 1900 exact searches a month is just not worth it - you don't get any traffic! Even at 1900 searches you HAVE to be able to get to #1.

In the end, though it depends on how much work you have to put into building the page and then getting and maintaining the #1 ranking, I suppose.

  • With 1000 exact searches per month, that's about 33 searches per day.

If you get the No.1 position, you're probably going to get about 15 visitors per day. It can be profitable if you have a high CTR, but it depends.

    • I would rather target very low searches per month (say between 300 and 800) and get some traffic to my sites than aim for 1800+ searches per month and get zero traffic to my sites.

And that's just for 1 keyword. Imagine if your site was optimised for 200 keywords that had low searches?
  • the "highest paying" KW is not the "most profitable" keyword, easy as that. If your KW has not decent search volume, what's the point in having a good CPC?

CPC is not what you need to look for, you need to look for CPC *plus* decent search volume. NO ONE for example searches for "dallas mesothelioma lawyer" or most of those supposedly "best keywords". You need to combine search volume and CPC to come up with what KW is most PROFITABLE. A KW with only 5 searches/month is not even if it "pays" $25/click

    • When you are talking about clicks at that level, it's likely they are search network advertisers and not shown on content network.

It's a big mistake to base a niche site on $$$ for ads only. You have to have search volume and be able to compete with other sites in the niche.

  • Its not enough searches, if you are purchasing a single domain. If you are adding on a page, and targeting the keyword then its worth it.
  • This is a good topic for me as i m learning about keyword research now.. I had a list of niches select to go for.. they had 1600 and 1900 searches per month. So i think working with them would be fine if i add additional long tails which have 500-1000 monthly search? what do you suggest guys ?
