Confused about keyword competition

So for the most part I've been pretty good at figuring out if I want to go for a niche or not, but I've found something that has seriously perplexed me.

The KW gets roughly 15,000 searches per month.
KW has 4.7 million pages with broad search
KW has 775,000 pages in quotes...

The 1st page results are very interesting.

All of the websites have no more than 150 backlinks (several have under 10) and most don't even have a pagerank, yet their domain age shows they have been online for years (I'm talking nearly a decade here.)

I'm thinking about trying to see if I can rank for the keyword, but I'm concerned I'll be wasting my time because of the domain ages for most of the sites. One has been online for 9 years, has 1 backlink, and a pagerank of zero...

Am I missing something here?

For me it has always seemed like an anomaly to think of building a site based on one phrase. All my successful ventures came as a result of traffic to lots of pages, and involving lots of keywords. For example, I looked at a dance site just now that gets about 3000 uniques per day, and that involved 1336 key phrases with the #1 phrase getting just 46 uniques today. I would find it difficult to depend on one phrase, but I guess some people do it. Have you thought about improving your numbers by working with more pages and phrases for one site? Or am I off base to think in that way?

Over the years I often saw pages of my site pop up on unexpected searches, when I wasn't even looking for it. The more content you have the more searches can find it, the more versatile you'll be.

As for forum ages, yes, old is golden to google but not always. I believe that low PR sites with almost no backlinks that rank highly are doing so largely due to high relevance. So I'd try and keep that in mind.

Thanks groovystar, the problem seems to be these are just all one off pages, not whole sites devoted to the keyword -- I think I'm going to go for it and report back if I see any results...

I'm also very interested in finding out how much a pages age weights in on SEO. I mean if you have a site thats SEO'd by the books and you have high quality back links, you should be able to out rank an older page that has 1 back link and no SEO what so ever? Are there any good tools to see what the domain age is?

Try putting up your site with a WP blog you'll be surprised at the power of the WP also that way you'll have relevant pages every time you post. It's not too difficult to barging onto the first page when you have a good wp with relevant content. Good luck to you ...
Not that I think you will be neding any luck as it seems that you have the right attitude in your approach to finding and researching your niches. Not as a plug.. well maybe a little have a look at the blog template that is linked in my signature it's a good tool to use
