Google webmaster tools hurt your rankings?

I put two of my sites in Google webmaster tools to be able to check on the backlinks coming up. It works well, and I can see new backlinks showing up pretty quick.

However, I have heard that for some reason having your site in Google webmaster tools could actually hurt your SEO rankings. SEO rumor?

I'm far from an SEO expert, so I have come here to ask the experts their opinions. I know some people who have no clue will probably chip in with their answer. But I'm interested in those experienced SEO guys who really know.

well some people have mentioned that if you run MANY affiliate sites google will bump your rankings down because your content is considered bad practice... but if you only run like 10 sites you should be fine

I don't think that use of google webmaster tool effects on ranking of your site.

It makes no sense cause Google will eventually track bad sites outside GWT and send them to hell.

Maybe this is another SEO joke?

Hey, I have no clue. Haven't seen any evidence with it of the two sites I've put in there, but just wondered if any SEO experts have heard this one and had any real views on the issue.

Don't know if it's a joke or not and I can't remember where I read it, but I know I read it more than once. Maybe it was the same forum that's renowned for bad advice (not this one).

Big G can do anything right?

Using G analytics is also bad for your site.

(Putting on my tin foil hat now)

If they put a service out, they want people to use it. Why would they punish people for using their service--assuming they're not ABusing it?

Yes, I highly doubt it too.
The webmaster tool is really useful to all webmasters instead of hurting the site ranking.

I guess it is just an SEO rumors considering that Google webmaster central are just for checking backlinks, traffic and status of your site...

It's not true, using Google Webmaster tools does not hurt your sites, it is true that if you running sites you want to be under the radar so to speak, you should stay away as Google employees can access this info and see what other sites you are runningm but there are many ways to do this so the idea that GWT hurts your site is born out or paranoia. I have over 100 sites in there with no problems arising from them being monitored in GWT.

I cannot imagine that webmaster tools could or would hurt your ranking. It is put in place to give webmasters a clue as to how their site is performing in Google.
