i have found a bunch of keywords that I find very hard to write content for, mainly because the phrases are hard to use naturally, such as "buy poster", I often find myself using the phrase "buy a poster", which does not match it...

My question, does the algorithm take articles into account?

You may want to check those keywords more closely. What I mean is that Googles keyword tool will often give you a high search count on some keywords in broad match but hardly any in either phrase or exact match.

So if the keywords are not getting many searches in phrase and exact match then it may not be worth trying to rank form them.

Yep what Will said is right, always do keyword research on exact match. But I can imagine that phrases like buy poster have a more or less high search volume, even in exact search. As you said it's hard to use these keywords in a good sentence. But google also counts similar keywords, in fact if you use similar but not exact the same keywords it's better for seo.
However you should use the exact keyword at least a few times and in every case in the title.
A possibility is to make a slogan out of it. So you don't need right grammar. this slogan can be repeated in the text again. If you write a normal sentence just add a few words of use similar words.
