I'm sure this has been asked before, but will having multiple registered domains pointing to the same root folder (website) dilute/weaken the website's natural ranking?

Let's say you have mywebsite.com, my-website.com and my-web-site.com pointing to the same website.

If I just had mywebsite.com, would it rank higher in Google, all things being equal?

Also, which one of these sites would be indexed in Google (or would all them be indexed)?

  • i know http://mywebsite.com and http://www.mywebsite.com will dilute it. not sure about the above examples.. but if you mean just get the other domains and point to the same site.. there's no problem. what do you think google and goooogle and gooooooole all point to google.com

    • Personally with my experience with different marketing systems, I will say that having multiple URLS pointing to the same site is great seo juice. Something similar to having affiliates redirect your domain name to their domain name.

      There is in my opinion no reason that it will not help. Especially if there is two domains that are similar.

      www.InternetMarketingTraining.Com and www.InternetMarketingTrainings.Com

      Those are pretty much the same thing and could work as good seo juice if you are targeting that term.

  • Its difficult to say which will get indexed, but i suspect the mywebsite.com will (only one of them will). It will not dilute the sites natural ranking (Google will understand that the site is the same, just with different urls).

    The answer is test and see what happens and continually check your ranking.

    • In my experience, you gain nothing by having a bunch on non-indexed domains registered to simply redirect to another site. Now if you have landing pages on the domains with links pointing to the target site, then yes it will provide positive SEO.

      Remember this: as far as Google is concerned, content is king. As to your question about which one would get indexed, it would be the one with the most relevant content to the keywords you're targeting.
  • Instead of having them go to the same place on your host set a 301 (permanent redirect) from all of the domains to a specific one. That will funnel all the link juice sent to any of them to the main one you select, which will then rank better in the search engines.

    • I think this is the proper solution.

      My situation is that I registered my-website.com, built up some content, and now want to register mywebsite.com which is available. I found out that one cannot "delete" a domain until it expires. So, I will buy mywebsite.com, point it to the root folder of the site I started and hope I didn't shoot myself in the foot having my-website.com out there. I think the SEO all depends on which domain the backlinks point to, and of course I will use mywebsite.com when backlinking.

    • It all depends on how you have them pointing to the first site.

      If you are just doing a straight redirect, then I don't think you will have much luck getting those domains indexed. If you have some content for the spiders to crawl but have it set to redirect with frames then you would have a better chance IMHO....

  • Make sure you point with a 301 re-direct and you will be fine, no SEO penalty.
