Steps to Rank Inner Pages

How do we go about ranking inner pages? I have a large site with many pages each page targets a different long tail uncompetitive term.

My competition looks weak for most terms, with the key phrase not even being in many of the SERPS URL or page Title and many are just crappy shopping sites.

The site is 3 weeks old so it may be too early but what Ive done so far for some of the pages is:

  • Submitted to EZA with keyprhased URL in resource box
  • Submitted my blog pages and EZA articles to multiple social bookmark sites using Only Wire as well as pinged them too.
  • Got about 10 backlinks for each page (Ive only done some pages for now) did this on blogs and forums.
The above process has worked for me when trying to rank a main domain like XXXXX.com but it seems trying to rank inner pages might be harder/take longer?

Anyway is what Ive done so farm, enough to get on the first page you think?

Should I sit back and wait and keep writing new articles/pages?

If not what else can I do to target all these different keyphrases and rank these pages?

Thanks

Inner pages work exactly the same as the root page. They won't get the exact domain name bonus like the homepage so will take a little longer while the site is only new. Once your domain (home page and inner pages) gets a quantity of quality backlinks the inner pages will begin to rank very quickly. I have got inner pages into #1 in a matter of days. It just depends on competition and patience while the site is new.

Make sure your internal link structure is up to scratch too. Break your site into categories and make sure these categories are accessible from the homepage. Interlink pages within a category too.

Lately I've been running a small test with a new niche site just backlinking inner pages - NOT the domain name - cause the domain has 2 exact keywords and we know G loves that stuff with a good article on index.

I am trying to prove myself I can rank the domain name up the top with no backlinks to index page - the opposite of what I always do.

For your inner pages, can you:

-create backlinks directly to the inner pages themselves?

-create keyword rich content for those pages

When it comes to SEO, I'd treat the inner pages just like they were a main page and promote them individually as much as you can.

Hey Fernando - doing something similar - be interested how it works out for you.

Hi payment proof - been doing this on a new site. It sounds like it ought to work.

    Good luck!

Yeah the key here is to promote them individually IMO.

Also if you can add a video from YouTube as videos are often crawled by spiders (quicker indexing).

I know we need to promote them individually but HOW? Apart from getting low quality backlinks....is there some other ways?

Videos take too long to make so I dont want to do that

But for example can I make a 100 blogspot pages 1 page each, which link back to each of my pages on my main site?

That seems kind of spammy so prob not but thats the type of creativity and easiness Im looking for

    Any thoughts...

There is no need to promote each page. Focus on only on page seo for internal pages. Once your site becomes an authority site, its internal pages will automatically rank at page 1 without any off page seo.

          Hi Phillip

yes I thought that was some bad advice

          Whats your take on this?

How many backlinks on average do you think it takes to eventually rank a inner page in the top 5 results in Google for a uncompetitive term?

I know its a tough question but you know just your average term that has crappy results mainly articles, shopping results etc...

It seems to be taking a lot longer for inner pages to rank on a new site. I'm trying to get 5-10 backlinks per inner page, do you think this is enough?

Depends greatly on how uncompetitive it is. Sometimes just one mediocre link should do it. You need to experiment. Of course, you need to target the keyword in your achor text and in the page title.

Ranking an inner page is in no way different than ranking for a main page. The only problem is that until you get some age, pagerank, and backlinks to your site in general, you won't rank inner pages easily. Overall, in my opinion, it is definitely easier to rank a homepage than inner pages. They do ultimately rank, but it takes longer and more effort.

Other than this, about the only advice I can give you is to just be patient. Build your links, maintain your linkbuilding momentum, and most importantly - be patient.

    Good luck to you!

One of the reasons the homepage ranks higher than inner pages is because all of the inner pages (generally) link back to the homepage. You can control that...

Just saw this thread. Interestingly, the process for ranking your inner pages is exactly the same as the process for getting them indexed by Google. If you have a large site, deep crawling and indexation can be a problem, and without them no rankings. The most important factors and domain backlinks and deep linking to specific pages, but there's lots more if you want to address the issues fully. The best information anywhere for ensuring the crawling and indexation of very lrage sites by Google can be found here:

You need to develop deep links into your site to rank well for sub-pages. Mention those pages in newsletters, rss feeds etc...
