Let me say first that I'm no IM expert - but I've got a few sites that rank in the 1st, 2nd and other positions (and many times 2 and 3 times) on Google first page for some pretty competitive subjects.

Why I'm posting this is more for feedback and opinions and not bragging rights. Let me explain.

I'm not doubting all the many and various strategies for ranking, but I do just a couple of simple things that seem to get any site I create right up there on the first page. And I've done this without any 'article marketing', 'linking strategies', blog wheels and all the other stuff I've been reading about. Here's how I've done it.... and.... maybe I'm just lucky.... you tell me.....

1. Of course, I do some simple keyword research, I only use 'Market Samurai'. And I just do three things with it..... look for a couple or few thousands searches a months, competition as high as 100,000, and I just check out the top ten sights to see if I could compete. When I find that... the next step....

2. And this is the main one..... and the one that I believe is the answer...
Lot's of good, original, and helpful content. One site that I've made is only 22 pages, but 15 of them have strong content.

3. And as far as backlinks. I just do a few to some high page rank sites.

That's it..... My latest site had only 30 backlinks and it has a page rank of 2. And many of the other pages are getting ranking.

I have it on page one for almost 50 keywords in the niche. And I only started this site 2 months ago... It's beating out sites that have page ranks of 3 and 4 with some heavy backlinking to these sites. These things are also true for another 2 sites I have.... So,,,,,,

Am I just lucky? Or is 'CONTENT' the answer...... For me it seems that this is the answer..... I figure that I just have to offer more, and BETTER content than them. It just seems to work. Oh, of course I submit to Google Webmaster and create a Sitemap.......... That's it....

It will be completely dependent on a few factors. Most importantly how your competition is. Not the actual number of competitors but the quality and quantity of their SEO, backlinks, etc.

If you make 30 backlinks and are ranked number 2 for a keyword, it obviously doesn't have much competition. On average, it takes ne 3 months to get a solid spot in the top for keywords. But, I go slow with my backlinking and go for competitive markets.

I have to admit that I don't know what the magic formula is, but I have seen sites that have gotten an immediate high ranking on Google, but most sites don't make it there immediately.

I know that content is so important to all of the search engines. The keyword / SEO stuff is important as well as the links to the site. If you are getting a high ranking immediately after creating the site, congratulations. The question that I am wondering about is how stable is the rank? Do your sites stay at that high position or do they start to fall as they get older (I've seen that before)?

I created a blogger blog a year and half ago with the same practices and it still holds a page rank of 3 till this day. And...

I haven't touched it in over 7 months.

Your post and thread can be somewhat [correction] "extremely" misleading for individuals new to Internet Marketing or those who have been in it for a while but still haven't figured it out. Let me explain...

When it comes to IM, markets are generally broken down in this manner.

Markets - intensely competitive
Major Markets - feverishly competitive 24/7
Mega Markets - fiercely competitive 24/7
Niches - heavily competitive
Micro Niches - moderately competitive to no competition
Microscopic Niches - no competition, but also little to no traffic

What you have explained can be accomplished in Micro Niches and Microscopic Niches provided that you pick the right keywords. But take that same technique and apply it to: Markets, Major Markets, Mega Markets and Niches and you will not see the same type of results.

When you start talking about niches, mega markets, major markets and even general markets, the competition is starts at incredible, goes to heavy and from there escalates to intense, feverish, and fierce.

You don't build websites, blogs or blogger sites or web 2.0 properties in those markets and walk away; especially not for 7 months. Rest assured by the time you get back, you'll find your site on page 69 of the SERPs, if you find it in the SERPs at all...

So in essence what you did was select either a Micro Niche or a Microscopic Niche and dominated them. To be clear; if you want to rank in niches, mega markets, major markets and general markets, it will take a lot more work!

I did not say that I ranked for 'loose weight' or 'dog training'....... but....

The blog I spoke of is pretty competitive... it's the 'learn piano' market. Pretty heavy... with some real strong competition. And the content I created is very, very strong, original, and extremely informative.

Another site was for a client. They are a metal forging company that creates wrought iron staircases, balconies etc. for luxury homes and a variety of other items such as driveway gates and fences..... not competitive?.... do a Google on 'wrought iron staircase' or 'wrought iron balconies' and tell me it's not competitive... There are some strong sites and companies in the field. Until I created many pages of content on a variety of keywords, they were no where to be found...... now they're found. Their traffic has increased leaps and bounds in just a couple of months.

Remember, I'm not bragging nor claiming anything. Nor, trying to be misleading to newbies..... I'm just stated one way that will help them get noticed..... CONTENT....

I'm simply saying that that I just created better and original content, and much more than they have on their sites.... and it seemed to work.

As for making money.... My piano site and related affiliate offers... does make money.... as silly as this may sound, I'm not talking about making money with this post. I'm well aware of the other factors to have a visitor take the leap and pull out a credit card.... I'm just talking about what I did with a few sights of average competition...... not 'micro' nor 'microscopic', to get on the first page.....

It just seems to be working...... maybe it'll change, maybe it won't.... just shootin the breeze here without any outrageous claims not anything to sell....

Lisa3876 on Youtube had a video on SEO and rankings. I watched it today. In essence, what you've done is along the lines of what she said is important - QUALITY CONTENT. I'm slowly learning that, even though we work hard to tweak and optimize every post we come across, it's the content - writing for the user... for the reader that's important. Not the search engines.

Additionally, the backlinks help as well.

Continue working Market Samurai, and using the keywords to make the killer content, and you'll see that your business is far more valuable than someone who writes well, but broadly based, with relatively niched, yet not attention-grabbing content.

  Looking up the competition is extremely important. You can get a top ranking on Google with an exact match keyword domain name and a wordpress template that still has the Hello Word post as the only content. I'v e seen this many times.
  
  However, the fact that you are getting many of your pages keywords ranked highly means you are doing things correctly. Sound keyword research with good content is always a winning strategy. Keep up the good work!

Content is king - highly relevant content in the form of pictures (with alt text and tags), videos (with the same), and great articles that are laser targeted to the main keywords.

It's no secret. It's just that most people don't take the time and CARE to do it.

How many sites have you got on page #1 with these simple steps? Are they making you money or your niches are not profitable?

If you got just 1 site, probably were lucky. If your niche is not profitable, probably people are not really competing for those keywords.

  I am finding content is huge for rankings more and more. I have been looking at sites to buy lately and have been blown away at how much traffic some of these sites get from search engines after being live for 4 - 6 months. We are talking about 50,000 to 75,000 unique visitors. The sites have few backlinks, but quality keyword focused content going live daily.
  
  So I feel content is huge from past experience and current research.

It sounds to me that I have to now pay more attention to what content I am putting on my sites. I have looked at few competitor sites lately and they are getting page ranks even though the site is not "pretty".

Has Google shifted in its content policy or have I missed the boat all this time?

  Warrior Dude, Like I said, not a whole lot of backlinking.... just a handful of the web 2.0 sites.... you know who they are.... and if I post some info/article on the site, I might go to scribd and a couple of other document sharing sites and post it there...... not spun..... just as it is on the site. I don't do article marketing... EZine or Goarticles and the like.....
  
  Then there's the occasional RSS submissions and a ping here and a ping there. But I don't really do much nor do I keep track of it..... I think I do that when I'm just bored and jump around a bit.... (I know, not very systematic or professional). But it sort of a test (and fun) to watch and see what Google will do with my sites.... and it's constantly updating it's stats on those sites often.
  
  The main thing is the keyword (up to 100,000 competition) and a dedicated page of info for that keyword... of course there's a bit of SEO for the page... like the page title must have the keyword, and the links.... and all the usual.
  
  After I created a new page of info, I just make a new xml sitemap and give to G. Webmaster... and, that's it.
  
  Listen, I know that there's so much more to do, and that can be done. I'm well aware of the techniques and methods. It's just that for some reason, content on good keywords has been doing it for me for the last year.... and after my first year and a half of buying all the systems and methods and "magic accidentally discovered secrete known only to the biggest guru's until now" hype, this seems to be working. And being a bit lazy at times, I'm kinda liking it....

I am about to make a niche content site and of course this is VERY interesting to me... but I have a question: My home page is going to have an opt-in form and a review of the product I'm promoting and therefore will remain pretty static. That page is optimized for its own keyword but because of its setup won't change much, instead I'll be adding lots of new content to the DOMAIN in the form of pages for each individual keyword. I was just wondering if you find you have to add more content to a single page for it to rank or if it can rank just by having lots of optimized content to begin with, and then adding pages to the DOMAIN, rather than updating that single page?

I just had one more thought before I shut it down for the night.... It's for the newbies........

Yes, there are specific steps that need to be taken to get some action, but, sometimes we tend to over analyze and try to get everything perfect from the get go.... let me tell you, you WON'T get everything perfect....

For those that have some knowledge and some expertise in ANY subject, it will be almost simple, and easy for you to get what you're looking for.

If, you just stick to some BASICS of site SEO and keyword research. I said the BASICS. Because the basics, believe it or not, will take you a long way.

You do not have to become an expert. The most important part after that is to get the knowledge you have between your ears onto the website. I'm now becoming a strong believer that solid, good, relevant, helpful content is what Google, and your potential customer like.

As you build your site and START getting it content filled, then, you can slowly, implement all the other methods of IM as you go. Your site does not have to be perfect....

As you learn more about SEO, make the adjustment. As you learn more about BACKLINKING, make the adjustment. As you learn more about Article Marketing, make the adjustment. As you learn more about Copywriting, make the adjustment. etc. etc. etc.

But as you're learning these things, KEEP THE CONTENT FLOWING... and just take some incremental steps on all the other stuff as you go. You will get a hell of an education by doing this, and also by screwing up....

Do NOT be afraid of doing it wrong! As many have told you over and over on this forum, messing up is part of the learning process.....

And lastly, no matter what your financial position, stop thinking about the BIG MONEY. Spend more time thinking about becoming the best at how you can HELP others with their needs, (by doing all of the above), and the money will follow.
