I recently started a medical related website and wanted to build backlinks for the same.

I emailed one blog owner which receives around 10,000 visitors a day and told him that i have featured his blog on my site's link page and requested him to link to my site if he likes it.

And i checked out his site after a couple of days i found the link there!

Btw it is a PR 4 blog so i guess it will surely add some good google juice for my site..

PS:

Just wanted to share this idea with you guys. I think it is a great way to build relevant back links. Have you tried it? If not i would suggest you to give it a try...

It is always good to feature high PR sites and try and discuss a link exchange with them. You can always run a whois search on the site and then try emailing or even cold-calling the blog owner (remember owners of popular blogs are going to get hundreds and hundreds of emails every day, if you are the unique individual who can call them up and grab their attention away from that screen for even a second there is a much greater chance that they won't ignore your request)

Now this is one of the best results for creating positive backlinks. With backlinks there are really two ways to go about it:

    1. Lots of linkbacks posted on blogs, forums, comments etc mostly spammed or scrapped - at the end of the day as long as they are out their they are going to effect your placement and the higher your placement the higher your traffic as long as you can break a certain page threshold which can be hard to do.

    2. Organic Backlinks as I call them - these are backlinks posted in a blog review or website by the creator and while they may not help your ranking as much because there wont be as many of them; you will find they still drive traffic because those blogs and sites have organic readers anyway and are now forwarding them to you. This is possibly a better alternative as now you have targeted traffic.

So my suggestion to you is read up on cold-calling, grab a cheap skype number and some skype credit and start calling up web-masters for a link exchange.
