All things being equal, which do you think carries more SEO value, domain age or Page Rank?
#age #domain #seo

PageRank - We at least know for a fact that it is at least one of the criteria google uses when determining SERP's and just because you have a domain name that has been sitting for years without anything on it or really anything done to it doesn't mean it has any more weight than one that is brand new.

Domain age is more important because PR doesn't really play a role in SERPS ranking.

A racing company we did SEO for only had a PR1, but a 10 year old domain. You may laugh at this but with 1 seeded article blast we got him #1 on a keyword with 600,000 competition. Permanent client from what, a few hours of work?

I've gotten dozens of PR0 domains on top of keywords with >100,000 comp as well (and not all exact match either). Most of the SERPS had decently high PR pages at the top, but a PR0-1 was able to surpass them in a fairly short amount of time.

For some reason I've been leaning toward looking for one with a keyword and age lately. I shop over 1 year and including a niche related keyword. Who knows if it helps, only testing will reveal the truth...

So the site was obviously around for awhile right? I am guessing it wasn't just a parked or unused domain. If it had a pr of 1 than it also had some links to it and had some sort of presence online.

My point about pr was that it would be more important than a domain that simply had age. I do not think pr is really that important in the overall scheme of things, but it is one of the factors (even though it may be a small factor)

Interesting. I have an exact match domain (.net) for a very competitive market and the top 10 ranked sites for the keyword have 8, 10 and even 13 year old domains in it, but all are PR3 and 4 at the most with underwhelming backlink profiles. The domain ages of the competition were scaring me off, but maybe it's worth pursuing after all. Thanks!

I have a couple of really old domains doing nothing, some 10, 12, even 14 years old. Problem is they're unrelated to my niches, but I should do something with them, no?

I think age of the domain helps a lot especially with backlinks to them. So if you have a domain sitting around not pointed anywhere, I suggest you do host it atleast. You can own the domain all you want but if its not hosted anywhere its worthless.

Another vote for an aged domain over PR. I have tried projects with both and the aged domain (as long as it had content on it continuously) has worked great for me!!

So let me ask you this. Do you think a brand new exact match .net domain has a chance of overtaking an 8 year old PR3 domain in a competitive niche once I've added enough content and exceeded their backlink profile or am I wasting my time?

Brand new EXACT match domain? Sure I think you could dominate with that. Problem is, these domains aren't going to rank fast with anything over... I dunno ... 50-75k comp

Hell we winked our eyes yesterday and one of our exact domains was rank 2 without 1 link.

I've actually had success ranking an aged domain faster, but you need to PUMP HEAVY LINKS... Don't hold back like it's a new domain. Ask yourself "Am i link building? if the answer is Yes, then good job. Keep going.

Build semantically related keyword 30% links and anchor text 70%.

Watch your investment zip up and penetrate the SERPS if you do it right.

Did the domain have anything on it for last 10 years? How long did the domain have material on it? Was it an unused domain? I have some domains registered in 2006. But they were URL directs with fake PR. Could those domains be used to shoot to the top for keyphrases?

I have a great domain name registered in 1996. It's had a BANS (Ebay affiliate) site sitting on it for the last few years and it brings in hardly anything. It has the word "talent" in it, so it would be perfect for some talent related niche (talent agency, talent scout etc.) although that's not really my forte.
