Is the Tier1+Tier2 linking structure really needed?

Hi everyone!

I've got a question that's been bothering me for a while now: I've heard a lot about the tier1/tier2 linking structure for SEO (something like this: senuke.com/bubblus_RandURL.jpg). But it's just not making sense to me on why we even bother with this... and here's my thought process:

1) Some people say it's to boost your links by building backlinks to the tier1 links; but if you using any sort of technique to get your tier1 indexed (eg. turn them into a RSS and submit, bookmark & ping), aren't you technically building backlinks to them, for less work & hassle?

2) Some say it's to protect your money site from being redflagged by SE's: but from the Matt Cutts videos he said that you won't be penalized for having too many links pointing to your sites (since otherwise a competitor could point mass spam links to you to have you sandboxed or de-indexed).

So I thought that wouldn't it be more efficient to just build links to your money site, as long as you're taking measures to get them indexed? Of course I'm still learning the ropes of SEO so please enlighten me!!

Many thanks,

Misty

Don't waste your time with this stuff. Linkwheels don't work any more, Google cracked them about a year ago, and people who are still selling them are just trying to scam you. Don't try to comete with the Google algorithm, you will lose and waste more than your time. Just build normal high quality permanent one-way links from relevant authority sites to your home page and to your important internal pages. That's all there is to real link-building. If you don't have access to such links, hire someone who does.

      I hope this helps!

You basically use tiers to protect your new site from being sandboxed.

If you use profile links, you direct the link juice though a web 2.0 property.

This is sheer nonsense. The Google sandbox is a myth. It has not been mentioned in any reputably SEO source for a long time. People, stop regurgitating urban legends, learn proper SEO or shut up!

        Like yourself?

What part of the google patents might we read more on ... where it discusses their use of "relevance" as a weighted factor in a backlinks value?

I think it helps to mix up your linking strategy so it looks more natural. As for if they do work, it's like trying to build up a funnel of link juice to your site through the use of tiered sites.

As for the results, I can't say it helps 100%, but I am testing them out as we speak.

Hey there, I found this thread in my search to understand if we differentiate between Tier1 and Tier2 in terms of site quality.

Am I to understand Tier2 is less link juice (bookmark sites) and Tier1 are more quality sites (quality as in .. quality and number of visitors etc)?

So I make up my Tier2 from cheapo, run of the mill, lesser known free blog sites? Or can 'they' be in Tier1 ?

Thanks if you can nail an answer for me,
and thanks is you can't anyway
