How ofter do you see the google/youtube slap

I've been lurking over the last few days and have seen alot of threads about google not only removing backlinks (one of my niche sites went from 422 to 99, but it didn't effect my ranking so I assume the links that were removed had little to no link juice) but also they've been removing videos from youtube as well.

Is this just a one off cull, the googls slap, that happens from time to time or is it just coincidence that all of these threads have appeared all at once and they do this all the time?

The one has nothing to do with the other. Videos are removed when they break this or that rule.

Google does not "remove backlinks," it just won't show them to you. Google has been messing with its tools since the Florida update, making them less and less useful to webmasters. It's really a shame. The link: operator has become completely useless, and even the number of links you can see in Webmaster Tools is dwindling.

Use Yahoo Site explorer to check your backlinks, and you will find a lot more. Trust me, Google sees and counts them for what they are worth, it just won't tell you. It doesn't want competitors to see each other's links.

    I hope this helps!

Phillip, off topic, but I gotta tell you that I am
glad to see you around the forum. You give some
spot on advice and it's about time more people
did. I'm not saying I will always agree, but you
have logic and real world stuff instead of "feelings."

Thanks for the kind welcome, Paul. I am just getting a hang of this forum, my "home turf" is SEOchat, but that's purely SEO and SEM. I am also interested in broader internet marketing, so I thought I'd check this one out. It's fun so far!
