I got a comment on my blog yesterday that went like this:-

''Let's say I just build a new website. I have a list of 450 high quality PR9 forums and 750 PR9 general directories. I'm building my backlinks manually and consistently for 30 days, an average of 40 backlinks per day. Will I be penalized for building high quality PR9 backlinks only?''

My answer was:

''Hi no you will not be penalised for that but.. You shouldn't start off by doing 40 links per day because it wont look natural in the eyes of Google.. start of with, say 10 a day and after a month or 2 move up to lets say 30 then the month after 40 per day...Otherwise it may look like you are buying the links .. that will be bad ''

What do you guys think of my answer?

It was a comment on the, Black Hat + White Hat = Gray Hat SEO.

How would you guys have replied?

Thanks

Ricky

As for the natural part, I think that is outdated material. I would suggest that you send as many links as you want a day as long as you are consistent about it.

But that's just one little piece of the puzzle. What are you doing with the backlinks, are you "boosting" them or trying to get them found in anyway, or just submitting them and forgetting them?

You also might want to diversify them some too...

AGREED!!!!! Forget the too many links myth, we build TONS of links for our clients (and my own niche sites) and have never seen a problem. Just mix the types you build up and you'll be fine.

Yes..... If a website has no links then on the next update that site has 1000 links google may penalise it...

Think it won't know allthe links are from directories?

Best do a combination of different types:

    directories
    articles
    forum profiles
    social bookmarks

Same old story - if you knew google penalized for getting so many links quickly you couild wipe out your competion overnight with already available backlinking programs.

This is a good point. And the other point i think is relevant is that its probably quite normal for a busines with a statup website to invest some time and effort promoting heir site around the web (links and directories) for a while then stop. This seems natural and sensible to me, not something google might penalise for.

Realistically, expecting a continuous, consistant amount of links over time is idealistic as opposed to realistic I think.

I agree, if you get like 5000 backlinks overnight it might raise a flag however it's not realistic to expect you will get 40 links every day, that is more unnatural than getting links at random intervals. I think all these link building methods that are mostly used by SEOs like directories, article directories, blog comments and profiles are low value links however if you throw a lot of them and competition is not so tough you will see a good results, but if you are competing with big companies you better be ready to start using "advanced" methods like linkbaiting, viral marketing etc.
