Backlinking and Page Rank for a forwarded domain

I've set up a domain that has a redirect to the affiliate product I'm selling, so anyone clicking on my url goes straight to the product page. I'm linking to this page and promoting it via my You Tube page and videos.

I saw an example of someone recently who was also doing this, and their domain had a PR of 4.

I have two questions about this strategy:
  1. To build up the PR would this person have done a lot of backlinking to the domain? I can't see how Google would give good PR based on the domain content, because there isn't any. So if I want to build up my PR do I find lots of backlinks?
  2. What's the benefit in building up the PR on a forwarded site? The site itself probably isn't going to show up in any Google searches (although it may rank for an exact match on the actual name). Am I better off building up my links to my You Tube channel and other Web 2.0 properties?
Thanks in advance for your responses.

    1. A good PR would have been built by building quality backlinks of higher PR so that the link juice of these sites could flow to the site that you are talking about.

    2. PR of forwarded domain is inherited from the main domain. It is worthless though. Many people try to scam others by selling forwarded domains. However, a simple check of backlinks will enable you to confirm that the domain was forwarded.

Hi Seolake, thanks for the answers. #1 is straightforward - quality links / higher PR.

Your answer to #2 raises some questions. In this example, I have ABC.com and it forwards to DEF.com. I build up backlinks to ABC.com. Does Google then 'credit' these backlinks to DEF.com? The only advantage I can think of in building up backlinks to ABC.com to increase PR is if in the future I plan on stopping the forward and using the site for a blog.

I've also got a 3rd question. If I build up backlinks to my YouTube channel to try and increase PR, does that help the individual videos rank better for their search terms, or would I be better off backlinking via articles etc to the individual videos?

You are under a false assumption about youtube.
The world searches for videos on youtube, that is,
the vast majority. They will not find them in SERPs,
and backlinks have no effect. Well, for you and I,
you probably won't be found via a search engine.

You need to make your videos popular and get high ratings.
Start a channel and build on it. The more views and higher
ratings, the more the video moves up. Build backlinks to
your youtube channel, not individual videos.

I myself, if I were into video, would create a squidoo page
and load up my videos on it. You could get the squidoo
      to rank quite high.

Thanks Paulgl. I was looking at Youtube from two angles - sometimes on page 1 of Google searches it'll show a couple of YouTube videos. How does Google pick which ones to put here - PR, or based on other factors.

Within YouTube, different channels have PR. Are you saying that within YouTube search that the major factors are views and ratings, not links to the videos or channel?

You can get a video to show up in the search engines easily if you know how to do it! Its all about the title of the video (keywords) and how much competition they have. I get them on page 1 all the time!

PR is computed solely based on backlinks and the PR of the pages from which they point; it has nothing to do with "content".

What kind of forwarding are you using? You should only use a 301 redirect, the only SEO-friendly redirect, which transfers PR and link power to the target domain. Frame-based forwarding is not SEO-friendly.
